If you took over the US how would you divide it?

I would assign each state, including DC a number 01-50 (alphabetical order so Alabama = 01...). Then I'd use a random integer generator for numbers 1-51. The first ten numbers picked would be group A. The next ten group B and so on. Each group would be armed with 12 nuclear weapons and then let loose to destroy other groups.
It makes about as much sense as some of the other posts in this thread.

That land is Michigan's as a compromise. Michigan lost the prime real estate of the Toledo Strip and Canal rights to Ohio, so to compensate they gave us this worthless swampland. Nice copper and iron deposits up here, but by now they are exhausted. Anway, if you give Michigan to Ohio, you'll have the second largest population of any state, and it will be split almost exactly down the middle in political terms. The ultimate swing state.

How to divide the U.S., this is a fine topic.
Well some states have outlived their usefullness, they will be eliminated. Others need to be created.
Massachussets will asorbe its southern neighbors, except for a portion of Conneticut which will go to New York. (straighteining out the sloppy western border)
New Hampshire will get the rest of northern New England. (they were the first state formed so they get to keep their name)
New York will be broken off into two parts. NYC and Other York. (so I don't need to clarify which one when I am speaking about)
New Jersey Maryland and Delaware will be part of Pennsylvania. Erie can be given back to New York.
West Virginia will be part of Virginia again.
South Carolina will become part of Georgia. North Carolina will become Carolina.
The Northern Peninsula will become part of Wisconson.
The Texas panhandle will become part of the Oklahoma panhandle.
The "El Paso part" of Texas will become part of New Mexico, evening out the border.
The Dakotas will become Dakota.
The Idaho Peninsula will be combined with eastern Washington to form a new state.
Puerto Rico will become a state.
Washington D.C. will be given back to Pennsylvania. (which absorbed Maryland)
