The Cold War Deluxe; 1950-1991

mountains look kind pyramidy? weren't there more hills than mountains in vietnam?
yeah. it's a different look for sure. IIRC, the Central Highlands area of vietnam was rather hilly and the NW section of n vietnam has some peaks that are a little bigger than hills.

the thing i like about this terrain pack (for the VNW scenario) is the jungly lushness of the colors.

El Justo,

this scenario is definitely a masterpiece, but I'd suggest to reconsider the distribution of airpower.

While the US has a vast number of different types of aircraft to choose from, other countries (I think somebody in this thread has already mentioned Germany) cannot build any airplanes. For most of the time during the Cold War the US most probably was the leading nation in the field of air combat, but some of the units in your scenario are so overpowered that nobody, not even the USSR, can match them.
The F-111, for example, has a range (25) and bombardement value (4*45)that virtually makes it a B-52 replacement. I'd say these values need to be adjusted.

Aethelwulf,

thanks for the kind words.

Klyden and i labored pretty good w/ this issue. the f-111, while available to the US (along w/ the b52), is also available to other nato-type civs (australia comes to mind). we needed to plug in a heavy type bomber for civs other than USA.

another thing: i had originally set out to not allow USA to build these aircrafts but after some consideration and nudging by my friend Klyden, i figured that the US ought to be able to build them for themselves.

in other words, if it's "American" then the US can build it. we encountered this same issue w/ the F102 Delta Dagger.

Actually, the F111 is pretty wimped down compared to the earlier versions of the scenario. It has shorter range and the rest of the stats have been degraded as well. On top of that, it has a pretty hefty price tag. The upside is that it is generally available earlier than what it was before.

F111 is not even close to a B52 replacement. The B52 has big advantages in most every category (33% more RoF, more than double the bomb attack, and 5 times the range, an extra 2 hps). The B52 can and will sink ships in port with a single bomb run. You won't see any other unit in the game do that.

The F111 is basically the same as a Backfire for the USSR. The WP plane that is more like the B52 is the Bear (several positions can build this). The Bear is inferior in every way to a B52 except in range. The advantage the Soviet gets is they can build all they want.

Having played a lot from most any perspective in this game, the side you play is going generally have the advantage in the air if you play your cards right. I have played the WP twice and have enjoyed good air superiority for the most part, despite the attempts of bombing and such from the AI. The only time I get into trouble is if I leave transports by themselves in ports and have little or no air cover and then I generally have sunken transports.

You look at the inventory of planes generally available, they are more or less along historical lines. The WG position does not need a deep strike bomber like a B52. They have 0 need for one for the most part and I can't imagine them getting to a point that unless the game is hopelessly over that they would be in a position to be able to allocate resources for one. Most countries not on the firing line, do have some type of bomber available. It may not be that hot, but it is available.

As far as the match ups go, it is intended that the WP side be able to have somewhat of a numerical advantage and that NATO have a quality edge, but the units for NATO be more expensive.

I will also say that tactics do matter in the game. If you are trying to bomb enemy cities with aircraft, you are generally going to take very heavy casualties from air defense and also his intercepters. The best way I have found to try to neutralize air power before I send in the bombers is to get some naval support to destroy aircraft on the ground and/or use artillery and just take something the hard way. If I try to use air power, I go with cheap fighters first to chew up their intercepters and then send in the good stuff to finish the job.

[offtopic] while travelling over the Ben Franklin bridge last weekend, i had the opportunity to see, from a considerable distance however, the grand 'ol USS New Jersey in port across the river from Philly in Camden, NJ.

it was all lit up, too.

An American history of WW3 (Part 1)

June 1961 - a UK spy scandal in the US strained relationships but not seriously. The Kennedy administration had other secrets on its mind... Spy plane overflights of Cuba had discovered tactical nukes and had spawned a furious internal debate how to handle it. A decision was finally reached for a secret military build up to take them out and overthrow the Cuban government at the same time in a large-scale invasion.

...

With the world at peace, or at least not at war, the State Department looked to formalizing the new Allied United Nations and questioned how to handle the countries either occupied or eliminated in the last couple of years. Particular problems would be Southern Africa’s now associated states of white-ruled South Africa and Pakistan conquered by an India that insisted it would become new Indian states. Many of these states and others around the world had governments in exile.

GREAT POST !!! Hey, feed us other stories like these, players !

... Part 1 is generally a clue that a part 2 is coming ;p

I have a feeling he just has to play to there haha.

PS: It was indeed a very good story!

The New Jersey did in fact see action between 1962 and 1964. The New Jersey participated in the Cuban blockade in 1962. A friend of mine serving on a destroyer escort related a story to me that while on watch in the radio room one night in the radio room he over heard the following interchange. Radio had an unidentified contact.
It was a dark moonless night. The fleet had been advise that russian vessels were approaching the picket line.

Radio operator: Un-identified ship at co-ordinate ???? please indentify yourself.
Pause - no response
Radio operator: Un-identified ship at co-ordinate ???? please indentify yourself.
pause - no response
Radio operator: Un-identified ship at co-ordinate ???? please indentify yourself.
still no response
Radio operator: Un-identified ship at co-ordinate ???? please indentify yourself. This the destroyer Escort ????, This is your last warning. If you do not respond we will be forced to fire upon you.
The response came as follows:
Destroyer Escort ????, fire at will This the New Jersey.

She also saw action in the gulf of Tonkin where she sank an island as a demonstration of fire power to the North Vietnamese Navy ( a small flotilla of offshore gun boats that had been harassing the fleet), they got the message.

This scenario is a blast. I just downloaded today and haven't done anything else since. It just feels very professional and everything seemed area seems to get plenty of attention. I'd give a more detailed post but I'm too busy playing it. :D

Regarding the F-117, its greatest and frankly only real assets are stealth, range and precision bombing. It is incapable of air2air combat as it carries no weaponry other than its payload. If you want deadly air power, I suggest someone develop an FA22 Raptor. Now there's a package. Stealth, precision bombing, supersonic spead ( without afterburners ), able to detect target up to 1200 klicks away, extreme manuverabilty and can out run sams. Fly higher, fast and further than any other combat aircraft, it can actually catch and shoot down a tomahawk cruise missle. One draw back is the price tag, 152 MILLION each. You wouldn't need many of these to gain air superiority.

Can you put the main file on this site. I'm having trouble downloading from this linked site.
which files?

the TCW files (large DL folder & biq) are on the 1st post of this thread.

Bad news on the Raptor front...one of the test prototypes crashed recently (current price actually $259 million!) grounding the test program at Nellis AFB. Also the Pentagon is likely to cut back procurement to only 160 aircraft (from 277) so the individual price tag will be even higher than $259 million, that's if the program doesn't get canned....

When I click on the link to the main file it takes me to another website the link there will download an HTP file and then I click to download the file, it says there is a 2 - 3 minute wait and a blank popup screen comes up. I waited 15 min and nothing happened. Tried several times, same result.

The definition of insane: someone who does the same thing, the same way, time after time and expects a different rusult.

For latest news on Raptor follow this link. Raptor is alive and well due to be fully interghrated by december. First squadron already operational. Pilots are already in training at Tyndal AFB, Fl. Tis is the news as of Feb 2, 2005. If you have later info I would appreciate hearing about it. I LOVE THIS PLANE.

This is getting a bit OT, sorry for thread jacking El Justo!
@ The Guardian, here's a recent (9 Feb) news link you might find interesting. Raptor News I would link you to an article at Jane's but you need to be a subscriber. Anyway a lot of the news available on the net is propoganda from AirForce types who want the plane badly or political spin from people who want the program canned. The truth is somewhere in the middle!
