The Great Armada (West Europe 1580 - 1640)

Yeah, three cheers for Lou for a great scenario!

Naval warfare definitely plays a big role, in fact it seems so natural that it's strange that it's not common in civ games. Of course the map design with several isolated areas that can only be bridged by ships is different from most maps that usually have land bridges.

No, normally I would be the last person on the planet pushing for a future tech... but when Im stopped mid game by the lack you can understand my concern!

Haha hopefully my suffering saves others from the same horror

... sadly, it seems we will never know just what happened to the brave Dutch and their invasion of Antwerp.

Pikes are called Defense now? That's even more confusing than the pikeman/pikes thingy.. I don't know the historical circumstances, but if they were organized differently than pikemen then maybe call them Organized Pikes or Pike Squadrons or something like that?

No defense is the German/Spanish America unit only... its been in the single player version for a while now.

Ironduck is a PBEM-only or nearly player now. Surpised he forgot about the "defense" unit.

Anyway v2.0b uploaded (including pollution limiting, I must say I never encountered pollution in this scenario but that should fix it).

I just forgot those 40 point defense units were called 'defense' :p - I haven't played as anything but Scotland since we started the Alba game..

Nice work LouLong. After crushed with Scotland I started play for League. English was making pretty attacks on Spanish Netherlands and southwestern France. Also like starting war with Scotland and Ireland. But Spanish are not active, they are fighting with Magribs and havent interest in England. After one make peace with Scotland(they gave me 2 cities) I gave it to Spanish. But it change nothing, I never saw Spanish navy...Germans have incredible unit named defence-it has defence like 2 tanks!!! I bombarded it to 1 point of life but hadnt chances to defeat this unit:-0. Netherlands had also great defence, I must captured their cities from East. Amsterdam and Rotterdam I captured after 6 turns fighting with about 50 bombards 30 riders. I won on victroy points 19 turns before end. Nice scenario, in future I will try it with another:-)

I had save. I am using this save for all games which I played, so dont be surprised about name

Hi, thanks for the report and glad you had fun !
Winning 19 turns before the end seems quite fair/balanced.

Use the civilopedia for defense (civilopedia is complete AFAIK) and you will see Germany is NOT supposed to be attacked. It is not an active player but is here for trading purposes and for historical realism but it is not a "real" civ and its cities are invicible to show that.

If you prefer a more active Spain, try version 2.0b as Spain is not at war with Maghrib and can therefore focus on England/Dutch, except for chasing some chebecks.
You probably would not see many Spanish ships anyway as in my test games, Spain attacked directly from the Atlantic and towards Belgium/netherlands is circling around Scotland (which the Great Armada did in reality).

I've been playing as the Spaniards and I have been losing 250 per turn since the very first moment, so by the 2nd turn or so my treasury was 0. Little worried at first, but when I saw nothing happened, I turned science to 70% and even luxury to 10%. Now I have almost destroyed the dutch and maghrib, so the fact isn't really important, but I don't see the point for treasures, as all gold gained disappears in a couple of turns. Is it intended to be that way?

one suggestion: have you thought about making a bigger map, maybe including some central Europe, Italy and some more of the mediterranean?

A really good scenario. Great work LouLong!! :goodjob:

Nothing happened when you had no gold and still ran a deficit? You're supposed to lose units each turn or something..

mmmh... I'm pretty sure I didn't lose any city improvement. Must check about units tho', but I think I didn't either

If nothing happens that's definitely a bug, there should always be a penalty for using money you don't have, it really shouldn't be possible to research when there's no gold to research for..

LouLong,
Thanks for version 2!!! I have the difficulty turned down so I can enjoy more of the city improvements and units. Minor thing really but a couple of the units seem to be missing attack .wavs

First when you are running a deficit, you will lose a unit each turn (worker, military unit,...). You will get a short message saying "XXX disbanded for lack of funds" or something very similar.

Second : you can play like that but that is a bit like cheating. Basicall you are supposed to stay afloat.... and you can ! Spain is a special case in this scenario as it needs a lot of micromanagement if you want to play it well. Check your cities to see if you can get more trade, sell techs or luxuries to your allies, you will lose a few units in the first turn which should help a bit, use taxemen, play with the taxes and luxuries %, use citizens (taxemen and later inquisitors) and ferry your treasures safely and you won't run a deficit.
But that requires A LOT of management which represents the burden the Spanish EMpire was. Creating Art shows will be very useful to put more citizen to work and produce more trade. And postal relays will limit corruption.

Third : glad you enjoy the scenario ! :)

I agree. Another civ3 engine limitation. Losing only one unit per turn max whatever amount of money you lose is as far as I am concerned a good opportunity for exploit.

You are most welcome.
Do with is as you please as long as you enjoy it.
These are sound files. Do you mean it causes crash in the game (I never encountered that) or the unit is just silent during some actions ? (in which case I am afraid I cannot do much as my skills at computer & sound are far from average (on the downside)).
