The World Turned Upside Down

From: The Friends of Greece
To: The World

Greece demands recognition as a legitimate state. The Greeks do not like these imperialists trampling our good Greek soil because what to do with good Greek soil is for the good Greek people to decide and not some foreign imperialist power -- much less three.

Excuse me for seeming like an idiot, but who are the 3 nations occupying Greece?

I always thought it was only Italy.

Orders coming in tomorrow.

Perhaps tonight if I am very organised!!!

EQ, I can do party, leader, etc. but what ideology is winning this election (and is it finally a majority or still coalition)?

My router blew up and Netgear will take me another 2-3 "business" days to send me another one. So, EQ, you'll have to NPC me this turn.

BTW, I'm at someone else's house and I have to go now, so no chance to send orders. Sorry. :(

I will be sending orders in AT NIGHT. After studying for the Bio test, writing some more of the IA, and working on my econ IA.

This is 16ish hour warning for the update.

ABYSSINIAN EMPIRE - 1954

JULY 30, 1954 - ADDIS ABABA - IMPERIAL PALACE
The aged, distinguished monarch known for so long as Emperor Iyasu V sat to the right of the podium, his heir to the left of the podium as the Prime Minister made his speech. He was speaking about the main issue on everyone's minds in Abyssinia - the increasing discontent of Somali Muslim radicals, under the leadership of the Party of Mohammed, and how to best deal with the issue. He was also praising the Constitution of 1953, which he said will continue guaranteeing the freedom of the Abyssinian people while ensuring that democracy remains safeguarded, prescribing a way to deal with thise that would destroy democracy with violence.

"I assure you all," the Prime Minister continued, "that there will be no government-sanctioned religious or ethnic discrimination against anyone. If someone is suspected with reasonable evidence of being a supporter of violent extremism, terrorism, assassination, and any other actions that harm or kill government officials and innocent people, he or she will be treated and punished on the same basis as any other such suspect. Christians and other faiths, do not fear - Islamic Law will not be arbitrarily imposed upon you and you shall not suffer intolerance. Similarly, Muslims should not worry about being discriminated against by the authorities. If you do not support radical extremism and abide by the laws governing all Abyssinian citizens, you have nothing to fear. We will ensure democracy for all!"

The crowd began cheering. Somewhere, in two separate places, the gunshots were drowned out by the chants.
One slammed into the podium and almost hit the Prime Minister. The other one, unfortunately, hit the Emperor in the side. The cheers turned to shrieks of terror and outrage. One of the culprits had already dropped his weapon somewhere and just shouted and wailed with the rest of the crowd. The other one wasn't that swift, trying to kill the target he initially missed. A woman next to him screamed "MURDERER!!!" and punched him in the face, knocking the pistol out of his hands. The people surrounding him took the cue and in no time tied the half-conscious man down.
Meanwhile, the Emperor was rushed to the hospital, along with his son, the Prime Minister, and other officials. Police were on their way to apprehend the would-be assassin.

AUGUST 2, 1954 - ADDIS ABABA - IMPERIAL PALACE

The mood was somber as the crowd gathered for the Prime Minister's announcement. Police and Internal Security force presence was much stronger this time for obvious reasons, and there were probably plainclothes agents scattered throughout the crowd.
Prime Minister Akka finally appeared but noone cheered, everyone just held their breath to hear of the Emperor's condition and the identity of the assassin.

"My dear citizens, I come with somber news," he dove right in. "Emperor Iyasu V Selassie, already in weaker health due to his age, did not survive the assassination." Collective gasps and cries of agony and sadness reverbrated throughout the assembly. "The Imperial Funeral will be held a week from now, and throughout the week his body will be available for all those who wish to mourn to pass through. However, this is not the end - the Abyssinian Empire was cemented by Iyasu V for the very purpose that it survive even AFTER his death.

"And it will, as his son Yostos is more than capable of continuing in his father's footsteps. Crown Prince Yostos Selassie shall be crowned the day after the Funeral. We realize that this seems rushed but in this critical time, we cannot afford to hold off and our government must smoothly transition into the next phase. There will be no traditional celebration, however, for obvious reasons.

"And now, I'm sure you're all wondering who the assassin was. Well, to be honest, he wasn't the assassin - his bullet was meant for me but missed. But nevertheless, he has been identified as Abdul Hasimo, the leader of the Beledweyne City Chapter of the Party of Mohammed." Though some outrage was present at this, some were clearly still surprised that one of the leading PoM functionaries actually engaged in such a crime. "The assassin of the Emperor has yet to be found or identified, but we are keeping up the search. We are also now openly investigating any and all political parties and organizations that have a radical extremist ideology and investigating their links to other terrorist activities. This brings our focus to bear on communists, fascists, Islamists, and their allies, but not only them.

"Any party found to have links to funding or support or participation in any terrorist activity will be outlawed for the upcoming elections. Anyone found funding, supporting, promoting, planning or actively participating in terrorism and such criminal acts will be punished and may be expelled from the Abyssinian Empire to distance him or her from endangering our people anymore than they already have with this heinous crime.
However, rest assured that I will NOT sanction any sort of mass deportations of targeted groups of people just based on the identity of the assassin or wannabe-assassin.
"Thank you."

AUGUST 9, 1954 - IMPERIAL FUNERAL
Crown Prince Yostos was speaking his eulogy about his father, and evoked admiration of his initiatives, goals, and his style of ruling. he assured that he would not deviate from the path to democracy that his father set Abyssinia on. At the Funeral, about 500 people were allowed on the grounds of the Palace, but many more waited outside the gates, paying homage to the fallen Emperor.
Everyone thought that Iyasu had done a stupendous job and was a man wise beyond even his old age of years, and there was a general fear of the future. But there was also some optimism that his son was groomed to not abuse his imperial power for cruel or undemocratic purposes, either.
But all in all, there was reverence and silence punctuated by sobs and wails from women every now and then. Everyone was present - Christian, Jews, and Muslims; Ethiopians, Arabs, Sudanese, and Somalis; workers and managers; merchants; men and women, these given special recognition and attention because it was a woman who had identified the captured assailant and prevented him not only from shooting again to kill the Prime Minister but also potentially the Crown Prince himself.
One of the turbaned Muslim men at the very front suddenly leapt at it, trying to scale it. At first, some people thought he simply wanted to get a better view, or he had not been able to mourn over the Emperor's body during the week due to the extremely long queues. But when a gun fell out of his coat during his climb, alarm was raised and people began shouting. The woman near him, also a Muslim, jumped up slightly and grabbed his foot a second before it would've been out of reach and the rest of the people helped her pull him down.
She took a twig nearby and started clobbering him, and everyone joined in. All he kept screaming was "Death to the Empire! The Party of Mohammed Shall Rise!" But eventually he fell unconscious and the police retrieved him, dragging him to the police station.
The Funeral inside was undisturbed by the commotion at the gates... but word got around fast.

SEPTEMBER 13, 1954 - SUPREME SENATE
After the coronation of the new Emperor Yostos III, the legislators in Addis Ababa began debating over investigations into the assassinations, as well as how to deal with the PoM, which had lost all respect - what little it had at any case - in the capital. The States Assembly had voted itself out of existence in accordance with the Constitution of 1953, and the Senate called for elections to be held in 1955 (this coming update) as opposed to 1956.

The Socialists were being censured repeatedly for playing up their communist propaganda that the assassination had signaled that the people no longer wanted the monarchy, while the PoM Senators had been deprived of their right to propose new legislation. The Nationalists had angled for a complete expulsion of the PoM from the Senate in general, but the Democrats and Conservatives nipped that in the bud and opted for a less extreme punishment.

Meanwhile, the political party scene was changing as well. Some leaders of the Party of Mohammed itself had expressed outrage that one of its members had tried to commit a crime when someone was mourning a loved one, even if he was the hated Emperor that did not want to grant Islamic Law. Several parties splintered off the PoM, the strongest three of these being the Islamic Pacifist Pact, the Islamic Traditionalist Caucus, and the Muslim Conservative Association, all of them renouncing violence as a means of achieving their goals.

The Nationalists were also calling for an immediate commencement of mass deportations of "Somali traitors" to Dar al Islam. Though a few members of the Christian Democrats, and the Socialists, and Left-Liberals also voiced support of such a radical resolution, the primary parties of the Democrats, Conservatives, as well as the Social Democrats and Islamic Centrists refused to support the bill.

"The day that the first mass deportation on the scale the Nationalists suggest begins just based on ethnic or religious background," Prime Minister Akka proclaimed publicly, "will be the day I step down, and leave with them."

There was no opposition among the moderate parties, however, to deporting people known to fund, support, or engage in any more terrorist activities against the Abyssinian government or people.
