BOTM 09 Pregame Discussion

I actually don't think ainwood knows who the rivals are, so no spoiler info there. It's DynamicSpirit's game. ;)

Since I'm less than 50% at Emperor level games, never won a XOTM above Monarch level, and I don't look forward to another slow decline to a culture/space loss on epic speed... I have decided to go for the adventurer save and give myself an actual chance to win this one.

With the worker and agriculture ready and waiting, I will settle somewhere near the stone/corn/rice and get a good jump on the AI that way, despite using first 2 turns to move. Exact spot will be decided by exploration with scout/worker.

Tech should be something like wheel>masonry>BW I think. Then some worker techs (AH>pottery>...) Then beeline alphabet.

Build order warrior first (already got a worker!)... and should be size 3-4 before its done (nice farms ready!), then settler to look for a good production spot with metals? to crunch out GW. I expect to get the Pyramids along the way, probably in Cap. That depends on the metal situation, and the proximity of soft neighbors. So a REX with option for an axe rush if it presents itself, and forego the Mids. I really want the GW because barbs can otherwise make a great annoyance to any strategy I try.

Wish me luck... I won't consider it a real Immortal level win since it is nerfed with a worker and a tech, but it looks to be a challenge I can be satisfied with if I win. (If I lose, then I will at least won't be regretting my decision to play Adventurur )

I would like my post back, there was no spoiler info at all. Those pictures were from another game demonstrating the bug; I didn't even load the real game when I posted that. :(

Good luck everybody, this looks like an interesting game! :)

Hi!

I've tried the posted contender test map:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=185679&d=1218575895

Btw, thanks for posting that greatbeyond! :)

EDIT after some troubles: Talking about a test game, not about the actual BOTM game. ;)

I'm having a lot of fun with this, but some strange things are happening:

1) Contact with Pacal

Ok, that's just a world builder thing probably, not important.

2) Now the big question:

Mao doesn't want to change civics, he says he doesn't like me enough and he is Friendly! There are no Vassals or PA in this game and he is not running his favorite civics.

Spoiler :

What's going on here? Are there some strange Bts modifications to civic changes or is this a bug? Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated!

I need Mao to drop out of Theocracy to spread religion for the Religious victory. I'll gift him an infected city if I have to, but I also want his votes, I'm investing in that friendship for ages!

Btw, here are the relations:

Spoiler :

You see, I've had enough fun with wars, I'd like to wrap things up. :)

Mao had the some ideas earlier in the game, but It didn't matter to me then:

Spoiler :

Finally, for some reason the game had an idea that Hatty was Josef's worst enemy. Uhm, but I'm playing as Josef! :rotfl:

Spoiler :

Moderator Action: Please accept my humble apologies - I was given a heads-up that it was spoiler information from the game, but it clearly isn't. Its actually fairly clear from the opening paragraph that it refers to the test game. I've restored the post.

@ainwood

Thanks! :)

I think I'll put "Talking about a test game, not about the actual BOTM game" the next time I post screenshots to avoid trouble. Well, off to the real game! :ninja:

This competition will open on 15 August 2009. From that date, you'll be able to get the starting saves here. Use the same URL to submit your completed entry, which you must do by 15 September 2009.

it must be a leaked version that has been released now :)

I tried the test game as well and was surprised to see cit barb with only 2 warriors defending them...Is it a 3.17 feature or some problem with the save ?

Send him round the ring of land before dropping him in your nearest, fast teching rival. Later in the game steal techs from him :)
As your tech-acquring costs are seriously affected by distance from your palace, do pick a close one, and preferrably the one you don't mind have many diplo minuses with from catching your spies.

Or are going to war with anyhow, in which case you can use your spare points to incite revolts and such...

d***... never knew espionage could be so powerfull!

In test games I teched the CS branch while stealing the engeneering branch... great for early aggressive (=combat one) macemen

Substitute "or" with "like" :)

Well, I had a bit of a 'shall I/shan't I mention it' moment, but I haven't posted for a while so I thought what the hey!

However, I'm actually holding fire on playing it just yet as I decide whether to play it on my old XP-running desktop (a veritable chug-fest in the latter game stages, and I can't watch the Olympics at the same time) or to mess around with my snazzy new Vista-running laptop (which runs BTS like a dream, oh lovely full graphics, smooth movements, etc) to get the HOF mod to be nice.

Bl**dy technology, mutter mutter...

Besides, I will no doubt get mauled on Immortal (manage to get about 3 or 4 cities before hitting Enter a lot) so will have no problems in making the deadline, whether 2008 or 2009...

I think I would start by settling NE of my settler's starting position, to benefit from all the precious things I can see (maybe after moving my explorer), and rush for the pyramids, AND the GW if I can (never played above monarch :()

Then I would start a specialist economy while exploring the continent, going for an early rush if I can find bronze or iron (never liked horses for conquest, well, maybe cavalry, but that comes quite too late for an early rush !).

I would also try to spend some beakers on navigation, to explore the word as fast as possible.

Mind you, I only post this because I want some advices, not because I think it's a sensational strategy :D

So answers are welcome !

"Then I would start a specialist economy while exploring the continent, going for an early rush if I can find bronze or iron".

Early rushes on Immortal can be hard, since unit cost is higher, and AI researches faster, builds cities faster, and starts with archery.

I honestly have never done one with Axes or earlier, although it certainly could work. Probably just have to be more careful. I'd suggest practicing some rushes on a different Immortal game first.

Did anybody else notice that stealing a worker is almost impossible now?
In my testgame they AI always protected his workers with an archer from the start on.
I think that's what they mean by "Improved worker threat assessment" from the latest patch.
Not being able to steal a worker made it impossible to me to conquer a neighbor early on. That will have a massive influence in the HoF!
I will settle in place, the prod boost is so nice. Worker first and not sure about GW. I'll testbed a REX strategy, not sure if we can afford that.

It's just that on immortal they have an archer to spare :) Still, managed to capture several easily, especially with chariots attacking frombehind the forest (later on)
