NEB1: One Thousand and One Ways to Die

Double post for the WIN!

Daft, if I change my orders regarding aliens, and that was the only change, could I keep the initiative bonus I have over some?

Oh, and don't get any ideas Daft regarding NEB1 ending.:p
EDIT: Red annouces that it will detain any person(s) who denounce the eventual return of the almighty UFO. I want that UFO to arrive Daf... I mean persons.
EDIT2: If you want a personal name for Red, Daft, then you can use either, "The Red Crusade", "Red Crusaders", or just "Crusaders". Any are fine and you can use whatever one you see as best.

You could join this one if you wanted, always room for more commanders on Gold, Aqua or Red teams :)

No, thanks. The game's too far in, and I like lurking atm.

NEB2 looks interesting, especially the cards. Certainly could have used them in NEB1 though. Maybe each commander of a team can automatically get one of the card bonus for the entire game, like a unique leader trait, like in Civ4.

Also, and this is my personal opinions I formed from NEB1, some stuff I would like in NEB2.

- A slightly enlarged map, maybe 12 by 12 or 14 by 14 max. Some more water tiles would be cool, encourage some more naval action.
- More naval units, only 4 seems small, maybe a destroyer? Or a Aircraft Carrier?
- Also more buildings and therefore income, I believe I counted up to $26 income, maybe bump it up to $40, or $50?
- A $1 unit would help people like Popcornlord who only have $1. A militia unit?
- I wish I didn't have to say this because of my love of tanks, but a pure Anti-tank unit could be nice. - Adjust spending, especially for Air units. With my light tanks, at $4, I've been able to do lots of stuff comparable to the little air units have. Even Aqua's light fighters which have had 4 or 5 turns to do stuff haven't done much(Or so it seems). Which may be why only 4 of them have been bought, and no bombers(Though I was planning to buy one at one point).

Just my thoughts, but anyways... can't what for the update. May the Light Tank reign supreme. Or at least while they sit comfortably in Orange HQ!:p

Aircraft carriers sound good, but wouldn't they be just crazy in terms of money and size? Also, Daftpanzer, maybe you could make technologies available to research, you know?

Aircraft carriers sound good, but wouldn't they be just crazy in terms of money and size? Also, Daftpanzer, maybe you could make technologies available to research, you know?

Ahh... no. There has only been 4 air units that have been bought, and 7 total. So they would be much reduced compared to OTL aircraft carriers.

But like Thlayli said, this discussion is clogging up thread, andyes, I'm the biggest culprit, so lets bring this discussion to a close.

Daftpanzer said:
Thanks again @all I will hopefully update within 48 hours.

I'm afraid I fail again, and basically I've been wasting most of my time… Apologies for the hypocrisy :(

Also, its looking like I'm going to be out most of tomorrow (Thursday). The update might be Saturday at this rate :(

BTW thanks for the feedback and ideas… I think NEB2 could be a mix of independent playable nations around the edge of the map, with a 'failed state' or some kind of disputed zone in the middle. People could then play as small factions and rebels etc as before, or as whole nations (although bigger, would have social issues and be bound by international treaties etc). I'm thinking of a much bigger map overall, with room for fleet battles and island hopping. If the map is mostly plain colour, it will still have a small file size as a PNG, especially if reduced to 256 colours for saving.

- Anyway I don’t plan to suddenly end this NEB, it will only end when the majority of players decide :)

Daft, you really don't have to apologize- you're doing us a huge service regardless of when the update arrives! :D

Cool!

Is that a possible new outside country?
Or possibly new light fighter, Armored car, and uhhh... Cavalry sprites?

I'll wait until Hell freezes over if need be to get your update Daft. So take your time.:goodjob:

As said before, it's that fun, so we'll stay patient. Take you're time, and do your update when ready!
Also, looks like a new country, or a new faction with unique sprites (like the pirats). Whichever, they look cool. :goodjob:

Turn 13 unlucky for some

Disturbing rumours spread from city E2, close to Red HQ itself. Some kind of anomaly suddenly appeared above city, described as being like a hole in the sky, as it seemed to absorb all the light around it. The anomaly even seemed to absorb heat from the surroundings, freezing the ground beneath it. Glimpses of some kind of solid structure where sometimes visible within the dark cloud.

It is said that roughly one third of the city's population was chosen to 'journey into heaven to be with their god'. They were rounded up by Red troopers and herded into open spaces, where 'tentacles' descended out of the darkness to envelop them. The horrifying spectacle was said to be a 'test of faith'. Those who panicked and fled were gunned down by the waiting Red soldiers. Strange beings of some kind were also said to have descended into the city streets.

At least, those are the rumours. A huge dark shape is still visible above E2, but EM disruption and the ongoing fighting in the vicinity have made it impossible to know any more. The event has already been dismissed as mass hysteria or some kind of psychological warfare exercise. The war went on as usual across the rest of Soldia.

Red Holy Command postponed the offensive against Aqua HQ, to concentrate on the treacherous Orange rebellion. The Aqua forces mostly let them withdraw in peace.

The ice across the northern waterways began to break up, aided by Aqua shellfire. A flanking manoeuvre by the remnants of Matt0088's Light Tank Guard against Orange HQ had to be shortened, to avoid losing tanks into the water. Aqua Armored Cars were also attempting their own flanking manouver against Matt0088's tanks, but found themselves stranded on the other side of the now un-frozen water, with a blown bridge behind them. The badly-damaged Aqua transport ship quickly sank after the ice melted.

The Red airborne infantry led by Commander Quoo were left stranded behind Aqua lines. While they hoped for help from the Palatine Kingdom, they found unexpected help from another new faction - the so called 'Blue Ghost' faction led by the newly returned and rebelling Aqua leader, codenamed Bestshot9, whose anti-COBRA stance attracted new recruits from Aqua territory.

General Vertinari was able to retain control of all the main Aqua army units, and now had sole command of the Aqua territory. But Bestshot perused guerrilla tactics and retreated into the eastern wilderness with his recruits, where they met with Quoo's survivng forces and made an uneasy alliance.

MetalSlug-Mission3.png

Bestshot's men attacked a supply convoy transporting around $1 worth of materials from the sunken transport ship. Vertinari's elite commandos were on hand to defend the convoy, although its progress was halted for now.

Red and Aqua commanders all made competing offers to the Palatine Kingdom, located to the north-east of Soldia, with promises to support for the monarchist cause. Red Command even declared city E4 as the new seat of a ceremonial monarchy, with a monarch to be chosen by the Palatines themselves. Blue Ghost army also offered token support.

Palatine envoys later met with the combined Red-BG forces and some kind of deal was made. Officially in response to other foreign incursions, Palatine forces decided to cross the border into the north-east corner of Soldia, to support Red and Blue Ghost forces against the Aqua-COBRA alliance. However the 'Grand Royal Expedition Army' seems disappointingly small at this point. It remains to be seen how Palatine troops will deal with the lethal modern weaponry being dished out in Soldia.

Red's interceptors prowled the skies above Aqua territory and shot down more of the enemy Light Fighters. The survivors were grounded for repairs at Aqua's new airbase at B8. Red's jets kept up strafing runs on the airfield, at least until both Red airfields came under heavy attack themselves.

Chaotic forces moved south to the hills at C9, skirmishing with Aqua and Deep Blue garrisons. The peace between Aqua, COBRA and Deep Blue forces still holds at this point.

---

Meanwhile, Red made its attack on Orange HQ. It was in many ways a repeat of previous battles, except that Red commanders now had better knowledge of enemy units and the local terrain. With only a few tanks left, Matt0088's guards bravely pressed the attack from the east, while other light tanks made an elaborate flanking move through forests and hills to attack from the west. Other units were due to support the attack, but Orange forces boldly launched an attack of their own against the airfield at C5. Red's dug-in heavy troopers managed to see off waves of attacks by Orange irregulars and Armored Cars until other Red units arrived.

A battle took place offshore at the same time. Admiral TerrisH's missile boat found itself fighting against both the Orange Sub and a new Destroyer that had arrived from overseas sponsors in the north. After an exchange of missiles, shells, and depth charges, both sides took damage but the Red missile boat held its ground. The rumoured transport ship bringing Orange reinforcements never showed itself.

A convoy from Red HQ seems to be attempting to reach TerrisH's ship. Its contents are unknown.

The fighting on land reached a stalemate. Matt0088's personal tank guards were reduced to nothing, although the experienced crews were able to fight on as infantry. Orange HQ held out. Units moving up from the south spread nuclear contamination with them, and more casualties were suffered to radiation sickness. Other reinforcements never arrived at all due to events elsewhere.

The Orange rebellion had deprived the Red Crusade of valuable resources. Engineer vehicles were dismantled for parts and used to rush a new Light Tank unit into action. It was just time to safe Red HQ from being invaded.

--

The Space Pirat mercenary army suddenly changed sides and joined COBRA as part of an undisclosed deal. Red units suddenly found themselves under fire from SP tanks in their own lines. In particular, the Red StuG unit was mauled by Symphony D's Heavy Tanks, before a few surviving vehicles managed to escape northwards. SP liaison agents at Red HQ also managed to set off several small bombs, although recently-improved security measures prevented the damage from being too severe. A probe by a weakened SP trooper unit towards the HQ was easily held back.

ArcGurren.png

The suddenness of Space Pirat's attack allowed Red HQ to hold onto $1 worth of funds and supplies originally meant as payment. Although another Red supply convoy with around $1, heading in the direction of Brown HQ, was intercepted and captured by SP forces (who will need to get it back to COBRA HQ).

Having suffered casualties at the hands of SP forces, COBRA troops did not seem happy about their new allies. In the confusion following Space Pirat's sudden change of sides, a few COBRA air attacks and rocket strikes went ahead against SP units, although damage was slight.

u86.png

SP Heavy Tanks, CGC Guided Launchers and most of the COBRA airforce then combined to pulverise Red positions at F5. It was the most intense bombardment seen so far. The already-damaged Red Heavy Tanks were wiped out, while the accompanying troopers took many casualties. Charles Li's Flakker unit bravely fought back against waves of aerial attack, shooting down many CGC Light Fighters in particular, until their last guns fell silent. Veteran Commander Charles Li is now MIA.

Morale among the Red Army may be falling, with a divide between those willing to fight on fanatically for the faith, and those more willing to rebel or change sides...

----

Thanks in part to the 'treachery' of Space Pirat forces, more information came to light regarding the mysterious 'Brown' army, now known as the Sciuridaen Expeditionary Force or SEF. According to COBRA propaganda, the SEF are crazed cultists who worship giant rodents.

The war in the south-west of Soldia became more confusing than usual. There were infiltrations, retreats, flanking manoeuvres, and long range fire-fights, followed by an unexpected foreign intervention. The intelligence provided by Space Pirat to COBRA command seemed to temporarily counter the SEF's stealth and deception tactics, but even so, it seems that neither side really knew what was going on.

It is known that elite sniper duels took place in the mountains around what is now believed to be SEF HQ at G1. Brown artillery emplacements poured more punishment on COBRA units trying to regroup at H4, and forced the surviving COBRA Rocket Launchers to retreat back towards their HQ.

COBRA and SEF troops also battled for possession of the ruined giant battle robot at H3. SEF troops have gained control for now, and apparently intend to dismantle it, as a convoy has been brought in to remove valuable items.

Space Pirate Light Tanks at F2 found themselves fighting against powerful opponents, rumoured to be former Anarchist Exo-Troopers, possibly even the bodyguard of Xolniu himself, now guarding a SEF mining facility at G2. Their presence in SEF territory is unexplained.

SP Rocket Artillery attacked the SEF HQ area at close range, though their own launchers took return fire and soon became disorganized.

---

SEF Commandos carried out the most daring mission of the war so far. Transport helicopters took them directly towards the CSS Ardashir, home to Field Marshall Thlayli and COBRA mobile field command.

At first, the sheer boldness of the attack seemed to pay off. The crew of the ship was busy with repair duties. Believing the aircraft to belong to COBRA or Space Pirat, the anti-air gunners on the Ardashir didn't start firing until it was too late. A first wave of Commandos abseiled aboard while others fired down from the helicopters. Fighting then spread throughout the ship. It is rumoured that Field Marshall Thlayli was himself held hostage at one point.

Desperate calls went out to other COBRA units. Space Priat Gunships were flying nearby and soon arrived on the scene - ironically the same Gunships which had earlier struck the ship with long range missiles. The Gunships shot down several SEF Helicopters and did what they could to clear the upper decks without sinking the ship.

Exactly what happened next is a mystery, except that the ship blew up and sank - probably as desperate SEF Commandos detonated the ammunition store. A few SEF Helicopters made it back to base, minus the Commandos. Field Marshall Thlayli is believed to be among the handful of survivors who swam back to COBRA HQ.

---

Greater Gondwanian forces stumbled into Soldia, arriving to the west of COBRA HQ. Their demands - for Space Pirat forces to leave Soldia, or Red Army to donate funds - were never met. However they now found Space Pirat employed by COBRA. The Greater Gondwanian Expedition Force (GGEF) paused on the border and seemed to be preparing to leave.

jadearmy.png

Then another expedition force arrived in Soldia, this time from the Lenierde Republic (which had just undergone another, even more strongly democratic revolution) across the south-west border. The LEF, also known as 'Jade Army', was being led by commander alex994 with a mission to expand democratic values into Soldia.

The LEF went straight into combat against COBRA forces holding the port city of I3. LEF tanks and experimental 'Armored Infantry' were backed up by jet aircraft overhead. COBRA units were caught off-guard and soon scattered in all directions.

COBRA commanders were naturally outraged, as were other foreign nations. It is rumoured that new negotiations have begun between COBRA and the Gondwanians.

---

A glowing 'whirlwind' has seen covering the CGC (former Green) HQ complex at G10. Electronics in the area have been affected, as with the other phenomena, but no more is known at this time.

Adding to the confusion, the original Green faction seems to have reappeared. Speedboats have been sighted in the water near the old Green HQ. They have has made no direct hostile moves, but are broadcasting anti-COBRA propaganda and trying to incite a Green loyalist uprising, blaming COBRA for polluting Soldia with radiation, and unleashing robotic and genetic monstrosities against innocent people.

Commander Tuxedohamm of the CGC still seems to command loyalty from most of the former-Green soldiers and civilians, although he is on the other side of Soldia fighting against the SEF…

Meanwhile, COBRA and CGC forces recaptured city I10 from Chaotic control. As usual, the Choatics have left the city in ruins and thousands have been massacred. It is rumoured the Chaotics may be using brain-washing techniques, as their conscript irregulars are continuing to fight even after the local troopers were wiped out.

It seems the Chaotic irregulars have also been attacked by a growing number of Kangaraptors in the area.

---

Out of the many refugee camps in Soldia, two have now grown into towns, with workshops and small industries valuable to the war effort. One in extreme north-west of Soldia, apparently under the influence of mystic cultists. The other is near the former (nuked) capitol, under Red control, with a makeshift hospital for thousands of radiation victims.

Thousands of other refugees began heading towards city G7, to the new 'captiol' of Soldia, under the apparently stable and benevolent rule of COBRA. Ruins still lie everywhere, but the city is a scene of rapid rebuilding, aided by COBRA repair robots, and it is already producing more valuable materials than before the war.

---

> The COBRA arms plant has produced another batch of upgraded weapons, ready for transport to any COBRA unit.

> The robot solders have climbed out of the water and onto the bridge at G6. They still seem to be moving erratically.

> Strange, giant aquatic creatures have been seen sighted in the waters south of C7. Environmentalists blame radiation and pollution for causing abnormal mutations.

> More strange radar signals have been detected at long range and very high altitude, but seem to be stationary.

The special foreign units have SECRET stats (I haven't written them up yet).

With regards to over-expansion, I always seem to have this problem. I guess doing small bits and pieces at a time over many days doesn't help. I'm going to have to set an absolute ban on any new features being involved from now on! Apart from like all those extra things I just have to include…

I wasted much time on the custom pixel 'art' :trophy:

Teams/factions with ambiguous colors on the map ill now have certain unique letters shown next to their units, instead of roman numerals.

Feel free to suggest new names for factions, or places on the map (@Matt0088, I forgot to use your custom name more instead of Red, I'll chance that next time).

If you didn't get a PM but would like one for some issue, let me know.

@ALL, important, if you want to give money to another player on another team, a supply convoy/truck thingy will have to physically get there! If it needs to go more than 3 squares, it will take more than one turn.

@DarthNader, I allowed you to buy a commando even though the money from red did not arrive during the turn, that’s why you only have $1 now.

@Red players, Matt0088 now gets all the money for the team and I'm sure will buy things for you if you ask :)

@Matt0088, $2 was received from scrapping the engineer vehicle (randomated between 1 and max $ value). And $1 was not paid to Space Pirat after they switched sides. That allowed just enough for a Light Tank.

@Thlayli, I meant to say about your use of the last upgrade thingy, I handn't intended them to be able to morph a unit into something else, only give a bonus in combat. I was OK with the irregulars becoming snipers, some nice thinking there :) but I'll say that only works with the irregulars which no-one can build normally anyway.

Sure, Deep Blue faction is still NPC, you can retake that if you wish :)

I also apologise for not keeping your secret identity like I did with Brown/DarthNader.

I also apologise for not keeping your secret identity like I did with Brown/DarthNader.

I don't have a grudge about it now, though. Rejoining as Deep Blue (though I'm killing off General Sogdian, who presumably is still in charge).

The End
It seemed like a dream- to an extent it was, given that it had all come out of nowhere. The end of what Deep Blue propaganda called a "great man" despite his treachery, and the end of the ambitions of what had originally been a man loyal at least to to the army, but by his death was merely out for his own ambition.

Future analyists would discover that the soldier Sarba, who had a long-standing grudge from the death of his father, Sentheo (OOC: happened after turn 3. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=298842&page=4), had joined the anarchist forces at B4. Joining the Orange forces when they came into existence, he fought for democracy without his secret being known.

A long time afterwards, his son confronted him about the idea that he should avenge his father- at one stage, he had taken an oath to that effect. Sarba had believed Sogdian was dead, but his son Saguire had learned the truth through rumor, and inferred where Sogdian really was from the evidence avaliable on the Internet. Sarba did not want to do it, so Saguire decided to take his place.

By this point, General Sogdian was out for power. Under the pretext that reunion with Aqua was not appropriate until there were "safeguards", his forces stayed out of critical battles for Aquan security. Concerned with how to best expand his faction, he would fail to notice or know about a "defector" from the Red forces (Saguire had defected to them first, to get closer to the shore) crossing the nuclear waste zones.

That midnight, Saguire would bribe a naive child to plant and detonate a large explosion outside the de facto palace. The masked Sogdian woke up in shock, and, as Saguire hoped, got up. Lying in wait, the ex-coporal prepared his gun and shot the leathal bullet...

So many new factions...how interesting. Nice update, Daft!
