Dr kossin #15

1) Settled... I was losing money at 0% so there was no point in an Academy. Do the math for Academy vs settling. Usually Academy is better as there are always ways to generate gold to keep the slider high on Imm+

2) He wouldn't trade me Monarchy for it even after some research in it. Sorry I didn't clarify that.

3) If you're gunning for The Colossus or SoL and the other AI has the prerequisite... if you plan war against them (Ivory).

4) As long as need be! It's even useful once you settle your second city because as you meet more AIs and they learn the techs, you get an extra 4% discount on the tech. What I like most about 0% slider though is flexibility. Rather than running 10 turns to research 'Communism' at 50%, if you research Democracy 5 turns at 0% and 5 at 100% when you see an AI going for Communism nets you 2 techs instead.

5) I started with 10 and built a few more... I'll confirm tomorrow but I'm guessing around ~18. I actually took the last city with a warrior.

6) Rather than leaving your units within striking distance of the target city, move them away to attack another city. Odds are the AI will move its units out. In this case, Hammy moved his spear 2 tiles across a river so it meant he needed 2 turns to get back in Babylon while I needed 2 turns to strike and my turn comes before his. TMIT does this a lot with HAs if you can catch one of his live streams. It also works very well with Cuirassiers/Cavalry.

great stuff...a little follow-up

1) cool...i see the reasoning. I usually like Acad too

2) Oh, of course. I have started to recognize this when trading.

4) sounds good. when is the ideal time to start this early though when thinking about a) getting those few worker techs in b) a strat tech or two c) writing d) then a tech based on strat like alpha/aesth or whatnot.

5) all chariots?

6) You are Nappy wrapped in a Sun-Tzu suit. Yep...i try to check out those TMIT games when I can. I've really not tried tactics like those - just brute force. I also need to work on not tipping my hand to the AI

many thanks

Start to Finish
Spoiler :

I had a bit of a big disaster early in the game. Didn’t know there was a marble down south, but saw one on the foodless hill in the east. I decided to get a settler out there and claim it. Unfortunately I had barbs and barbs and barbs and barbs. So much that getting to Woody III wasn’t a problem. The sad part is, I missed oracle because of this god damn problem. And then I had bad luck in the LAST friken barb battle, which then resulted in my east-blocker city to get razzed by the barbs. Ughhhh…

This caused my whole east to collapse, and get gobbled up by the Ottomans. What :):):):):):):):) luck.

I lost my city, the oracle, and woody III unit to the very last barb in that area, :):):):):):):):). Needless the say, the moral of the story is don’t give up.

It turns out these inland maps seem easy as hell from my experience. Sure enough, I was able to beat the Ai’s to liberalism, despite I didn’t bulb a damn thing. In fact, even without stone or industrious, I was able to even build TGW and Mids. So this gave me such a huge advantage that in the end what happened earlier didn’t really matter.

I built a ton of cuirassiers, and then upgraded to cav then romped over Ham… Stupid ****** wouldn’t vassal so I had to nail him down to almost 0 cities, unbelievable, considering he was off fighting vs. another character as well. Then I DoW on Ottomans and romp over them. Too easy…

The only problem is KK the IDIOT backstabs me yet again. He had been doing that constantly to me throughout the game and I have no idea why. I kept giving him techs and doing everything to keep him alive because other people, like Hammy were crushing him. Yet the stupid AI always tries to bite off the hands that feed them. Talk about stupid! (really smart there Firaxis)

I lost a lot of cities back to KK, only because I foolishly agreed to one of his demands earlier to switch out of Nationalism…. Yup, I knew better but oh well.

I don’t worry about it too much though, since after just about wiping out the Ottomans I continued pushing to the other side of the continent and started to butcher up KK.

Another war later I got the idiot to vassal. I couldn’t believe it. KK was much more willing to vassal, than either Hammy or the Ottomans.

Then, next in line was a DoW on Pacal (idiot should have seen this coming too). And when that was done, we DoW on the Americans.’

At this point I haulted to upgrade all tanks to modern armour before hitting vs. Saladin. For some reason he had enough terrain to block me from domination still. However, it turns out just before I was going to attack him, I won BOTH a Diplomatic AND a broken Religious victory.

Hahaha. GG.

4) I play without huts so gold is very low. Depending on the map, what I need, I like to start binary the turn before settling my second city. Something I picked up from a game Duckweed played. Before doing it though, just check you actually get the tech in time to do what you want... there are some cases where you can get the tech 1 turn faster without doing it. (City micro)

5) Exactly 18 chariots and 1 warrior. Nothing else for the rush. I'm building some Axes now to go after Barb cities and will get some Praets once Iron is online.

To End of Expansion ~300BC

Spoiler :

I went Agriculture -> Animal Husbandry -> Bronze Working -> The Wheel -> Pottery -> Writing -> Iron Working -> Masonry -> Sailing or something like that.

I stole 3 workers from Sule, so I only needed to build Settlers for a while (First at size 4, rest of' em at size 5). I recently trade Rice/Fish for Gold to boost my happy cap.

I plan on doing a Axe/Praet/Cat war vs. Hammy.

Empire after expansion:

I'm building the Great Lighthouse as I know that it will go extremely late in this game, and to get the economical boost.

Overall even if my war doesn't go as planned, this game is winnable.

Round 3

Well, this map is turning out to be quite easy. This leader is very strong... not for his UU but for his traits (or as Obsolete would say, Praets!!! - or something like that :p). Imperialistic means you can expand easily and Organized makes getting those courthouses up a charm. They're actually worth the hammer investment before 10gpt maintenance.

Anyway, I made that Academy 2 turns into the round and then opened up the slider... it's been sitting at 100% every turn since then but about 5 if I remember correctly.
Spoiler :

As Soirana pointed out, KK was after Lincoln... and still is by the end's round.
Spoiler :

Trades... deficit gold being the most important part.
Spoiler :

Taking barb cities also yields gold...
Spoiler :

Sure, take it! It won't help you anyway.
Spoiler :

More ways to make gold...
Spoiler :

Once Civil Service was finished, I switched to Bureaucracy and OR. Time to "abuse" those cottages with an Academy.
Spoiler :

Then Saladin made an "offer" I couldn't refuse.
Spoiler :

Just about everyone is at war with poor Lincoln... you heathen!

I then grudgingly traded Code of Laws away since Pacal started researching it...
Spoiler :

His offer

What I took instead (same turn)... having more gold than what he offered with Archery means he was pretty close to getting it.

Since Suleiman had been first at Literature for a few turns before me, I had decided to forgo the Music Great Artist. However, after finishing Civil Service it was still available so I got it anyway...
Spoiler :
Put to sleep for later use.

Next tech was Philosophy... see where I'm heading?
I wasn't too confident on landing TGL so I double checked before doing this...
Spoiler :

Surely enough, Suleiman finished it this turn -_-... I got ~300 gold instead.

Trade with Pacal... I don't care for the Wonder... other than the failure gold (trading means I get the gold sooner). Also forges are always welcome!
Spoiler :

I edged out Pacal to Philosophy by 2 turns hehehe
Spoiler :

And then I woke up Raphael with a kick in the back...
Spoiler :

For those that answered Philosophy+Caste earlier, you're right!
Spoiler :

Time to starve-generate 2 GS...
Spoiler :

I did this in 3 cities... as a result my 3another GS is more than 60% complete in Nippur.

You can see the # of specialists on the far right side.

Trade with Pacal since he stopped researching it when I got the religion... idiot!
Spoiler :

First GS.
Spoiler :

Second GS.
Spoiler :

Education is complete..

Now, the Golden Age is 1 turn from ending so I switch back to building civics...
Spoiler :

Nationalism just completed as well and I can start on Liberalism right away. I stopped the round here.

Techs
Spoiler :

Diplomacy - everybody Friendly.... well not everybody but those that actually are not trying too hard to lose.
Spoiler :

Two easy ways to win from here: Conquest/Domination or a quick run at the UN...

UN might be slightly more complicated (read: manipulate religions/civics with 2nd in pop) I think.

I'll take something substantial from Liberalism... either Radio/Electricity or Steel. Either way, the game is in the bag barring a weird turn.

very decent. Although very late philosophy was a surprise.
try late culture or something different now... please!

Give the big guy a break you bullies :D

Nice play though. Deliberately failing to get wonders is becoming rather a trademark move of yours!

When I think Rome, especially Julius Caesar, I think nice, peaceful culture start to finish with 6 cities :rolleyes:.

1896.

Spoiler :

Gifted cities to kublai and sully to get them to pleased. They went elsewhere. The rest of the world was embroiled in war.

My #3 city got a 36000 culture bomb the turn before I won. Obviously the other 2 cities were cottaged with cathedrals. Got cottages started a bit late and the land wasn't 100% perfect for this, so with only 2 religions it was a bit slow.

Hammy tried for culture too but 1) was hella slower than me and 2) got dogpiled by sully and his 3 vassals and kublai at the end.

Round 4

I decided to go for Culture to change things up... I'll try not to be too boring as honestly... not much happened.

The best Wonder for a Culture victory is obviously the Sistine Chapel. I wasn't going to build it initially but I changed my mind of course.
Spoiler :

Just for fun.... how often can you get GLH on immortal after 1000AD?
Spoiler :

Anyway, I made my way to Liberalism and picked Democracy as freebie to help grow cottages in the second culture city.
Spoiler :

KK peacefully accepted Pacal as a Vassal and then started getting restless with his troops. I didn't want to be the only one bored so I brought him out of several wars.
Spoiler :

I was first to Economics by a mile and got a lucrative trade mission.
Spoiler :
ToA city...

The first Great Artist I got was settled as by my calculations that was the better investment.
Spoiler :

I turned off the research slider when I got the last tech I wanted...
Spoiler :

And then it was time for the final civic change of the game...
Spoiler :
[/URL]

US for added production and rush-buying cathedrals. I spread 4 religions to almost every city.

I lazily got another wonder... not even in a good production city.
Spoiler :

I did gain a few cities though...
Spoiler :

And on the same turn at that!

You can see I had a Defensive Pact with KK in that screenshot. Suleiman did declare war on him and that dragged me in... I had a few rifles and killed 2 knights he sent at me and then sued for Peace.

After a while, this was the culture situation:
Spoiler :

Time to wake up those lazy musicians!

Babylon
Spoiler :

Dur-Kurigalzu
Spoiler :

Rome
Spoiler :

As a bonus... this is how I'd been running my citizens in Rome for the last few turns...

Anything to get the 3 Legendaries on the same turn!

Of course, it's game over, nobody can do anything about it.
Spoiler :

~~~~~~~~~~~~~Post-game
What an easy game! Rome was an absolute monster with all that food and there was so much land to be had... having so many neighbors also allows to deficit tech a lot easier than on Continents or sometimes Fractal.
In the end, I didn't build much military at all...
Spoiler :
And how did the score fare?
Spoiler :
Well, it's a culture victory after all... and I hadn't planned on it early enough (second culture city lagging on commerce).
Hope you didn't fall asleep reading the round! Dr kossin #16 will be on tomorrow, keep watching!
Obs, TMIT, Kadazzle: Interesting games, read them before putting up the report.
I got lazy and built wealth everywhere and culture in the 3 Legendary cities :D
Aqueducts and grocers were needed and some micro could be done too but I only did that for the 3 main cities...
"The people of Yamama wish to join your illustrious empire" That sounds like a bad civ themed Yo mama joke!:lol:
