FML 4-Shaka

Yeah me too, I've been playing Shaka in my recent game where I put 50% more players on a Standard map than your supposed too. He's worked excellently, as after wiping out my neighbor Sury with a fast stack, I managed to quickly grow after that, and have almost 50% more land than any of my opponents, with all the Jungle cities being quickly brought online thanks to numerous workers and health bonuses. Not to mention having the 2 key buildings cheap!

That sounds exactly like my game except I didn't add more leaders. I killed Huayna and got Stonehenge and the GW from him  Then I wiped out my continent, giving me like 45% of the world's land? Ah, it was fun. Anyway, the round has been played. Can anybody say Zulu Madagascar? I have an enormous tech lead, and I've beelined to SciMethod and Chemistry, meaning that I can either snag Communism or Biology with Liberalism. I'm thinking, Biology, beeline Communism, then spam the map full of Zulu cities. I also need railroads badly. The map is huge!

Well, like I promised, here it is. I was my mom's luggage boy today when she went shopping, that's my (truthful) excuse as to why I've taken so long to update.

Chapter 5: A Man of Science

Records of Shaka's accomplishments, big and small, are widespread throughout the world, from Oahu to Nippon the long way around. Many a tourist come to Zululand nowadays to witness the glorious structures that Shaka had built throughout his life(many statues of himself, naturally), but a rather peculiar one that seemed rather out of place compared to the rest of Shaka's buildings became a rather attractive option, as it reminded many Asiatic visitors of home.

Shaka continued to forward the studies of his people by writing a book about the art of war. The book became widespread throughout the world, both through the horrors it proposed, and the greatness of it's tactics. Shaka eventually admitted that Pacifism would be ideal, should there not be so many outsiders trying to invade Zululand, that it would never come to fruition. Shaka titled this book 'The Art of War', and later records would show a similar book appearing in China centuries before Shaka wrote his masterpiece, however, results clearly proved that Tsung-Tzu forged Shaka's work. Regardless, the book received enough opponents that among intellectuals, debate of what a government and people should do became widespread, and the burgouise and intellectuals would long be an annoyance on Shaka indefinetly, until the Red Revolution lead by Shaka in the 1600s.

However, despite Shaka's intent on the Zulunda faith remaining the official religion, Shaka decreed religious freedom, but decreed that Zulunda would nominally remain the faith of Zululand. Shaka's hand had been forced by the newly conquered tribes of Northeastern Zululand that had their own animist traditions incompatible with Zulunda. Shaka sent many missionaries to the newly conquered territories to ensure their loyalty, naturally, and animist tradition would soon be wiped out by the Zulunda faith due to their similarities.

Zulu sailors continued to explore along the coast of Frankland, eventually finding Elizabeth's kingdom(and reportedly delivering a boatload of wildflowers from Shaka), when a fleet of galleys approached the sailor's simple ships. The sailors, terrified of a Frankish attack, flew the white flag, but they found the fleet not to be Frankish, but Russian.

Zulu scientists began to prosper without the Zulunda clergy breathing down it's throat for Zulunda correctness, and breakthrough after breakthrough would reach Zululand for years to come, but the first major breakthrough began with the discovery of Machinery, allowing Shaka to finally have some use for all the rivers next to deserts that seemed to flow through Namibia.

Ndondakusuka was founded in Namibia, to commemorate the Zulu ability to turn a desert into a prosperous trade port. Shaka at the time was fully aware that it would be somewhat of a drain on the Zulu economy to fully grow this site, but Shaka was determined to maximize Zululand to it's potential and reach the Zulu homeland of Timbuktu.

Shaka continued to receive much groaning from the Zulunda clergy for his refusal to persecute Zulunda scientists that attempted to disprove Zulunda theology, however, Shaka proved his devotion to the Zulunda faith by building a temple praising every Zulu leader before him, and damming the moron who moved the Zulu people from Timbuktu to the most inhospitable location in Africa.

Shaka continued to expand the Zulu empire at a reasonable pace, always careful to never overstretch, and the first city of several to come was founded next to giant lakes that fed much of the jungle east of Kongo. Shaka immediately ordered the use of slash and burn to destroy all the jungle and make Babanango productive.

More progress by Zulu scientists continued to pour in as Shaka continued to sponsor science over the Zulunda religion, eventually resulting a breakthrough that all material was made from certain particular ingredients, even humans. While how much Shaka truly believed that to be true at the time is heavily debated, Shaka's scientists soon began to create chemicals that served purposes in the creation of goods. Reportedly, the famous Zulu cheese was first made thanks to advent of Chemistry.

A History of the Conquest of Madagascar
Madagascarian pirates had long raided the coast of Zululand, disrupting trade and pillaging the countryside of many Zulu cities. Shaka, fed up with the disturbances by these barbarians, ordered two divisions of men be sent to to Madagascar to kill every person on the island that harbored a barbarian. Shaka's elite specialists in jungle combat and counter-infantry where sent to deal with the reports of massive invasion plan by the confederation of barbarians. Shaka's troops where surrounded, but careful logistics and tracking allowed Shaka's troops to reach higher ground on the jungle, allowing Shaka to destroy 1/3rd of all the barbarians in Madagascar within a year.

However, the conquest does not end there. A tribal woman managed to rally all remaining barbarians to rally against the Zulu invasion, however, Shaka's jungle corps had become even more deadly in the jungle, allowing Shaka's elite division to wipe out another third of the barbarians while the counter-infantry guarded Southern Madagascar from more possible barbarians. Years of experience had turned Shaka's jungle warriors into the fiercest jungle fighters in history, and this time, Shaka launched a preemptive strike against the last remaining barbarians while Shaka's fleet sailed back to Ulundi. Shaka's braves reportedly eliminated every man, woman, and child, for there is no trace left of the native Madagascar culture. Shaka founded the city of Khangela in Southern Madagascar to mark his first victory over the Madagascar savages.

The city of kwaHlomendlini was founded in Northern Madagascar, securing the island for Zululand. However, Zulu problems with Madagascar would never seem to stop as development of the island stagnated while continental Zululand continued to expand and prosper. An island-based nationalism of the original Madagascar inhabitants would come to fruition in the future, based on the unequalness between Continental Zululand and Madagascar, with secession at one point being an almost true possibility. However, the referendum would fail, and Madagascar would remain a part of Federal Zululand.

Reportedly at first, some aboriginal Madagascar inhabitants managed to escape the island before the Zulu corps reached them first and fled into Zululand. They reportedly gave a full account of the events that transpired into the island. One horrified author and inventor, determined to spread the story, tinkered for years, until he eventually invented a contraption that allowed him to print en mass. The story circulated Zululand as even the uneducated learned of Shaka's crimes, and the northern provinces where in open revolt. Shaka was forced into an apology and a promise of life compensation for the survivors of the Madagascar genocide.

Shaka founded the city of Hlobane for the surviving Madagascarian refugees, and made Malay the sole official language of the province and city. Despite looking like a complete backwater, the city would prove to eventually be a strong part of the Zulu State and an industrial powerhouse.(Levee+Biology Farms=3F2H tiles on every square? :p) More importantly, it's the sole remaining city with the remnants of the Madagascar culture still withstanding.

As the 16th century dawned upon Shaka's Empire, Zululand had made massive strides in it's influence and technology. Reportedly, Shaka continued to romanticize with Elizabeth of the English, even going so far as to invite her to Zululand for a 'diplomatic visit'. Direct source accounts report Shaka and Elizabeth retiring to Madagascar for a few days where they reportedly made sweet l............
(The author was found dead, smashed underneath a printing press. It seems to be a true accident, although this is the first time a historian to report on Shaka Zulu's more controversial parts of his life to be found dead by an accident rather than a murder)

(Officer Mdondangu was later found dead after logging the details of the author's death to Shaka's brother Ctsena, the head of the infamous Mossad, the leading Zulu intelligence agency)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I'm planning expansion into the Kongo, making the Kenyan-Somali border my northern border for the time being, as I don't want to expand into more desert. I'm 3 turns off completing SciMethod, at which point I can take liberalism and get biology or communism. I'm planning on heading to Biology, then doubling back to Communism, then going for Steel->Railroads. I'm about 1 turn off of settling a city off the border of Angola. Anyway, wish me luck. I killed A LOT of barbs taking Madagascar! Here are some photos of my explorations.

The Indian Ocean:

Europe:

The Eastern Mediterranean:

I think I could beeline Space and win this easy, but that wouldn't be fun, we have to kill Hatshepsut with Infantry while she whip spams longbows if she's lucky!

Niceeeeeee :D I remember settling one of those "backwater" cities. It really paid of, seeing as how it became a powerhouse late game. Early game it was sort of like an island with Moai statues.

Do you know why Arabia only has one city?

Good god Yared, I admire(and it makes me feel special inside) at how fast you respond to this thread! I remember when I played this map as Babylon that before I could expand into the relatively resource rich area of middle Arabia, I had 2 settle 2 craptastic cities to link the Mecca area with the rest of my cities in the Levant and Egypt. Not like it matters, before the end of the game I was running at 80-something cities, trying to spam it up to 100 :p I'm assuming the AI would rather shoot itself in the foot than settle a worthless city in all directions. That, or barb Camel Archers refuse to stop harassing Saladin RFC style.

Wait how many barbarians were there in Madagascar? And wheres the Domestic screen?

I really can't feel bad for you when it seems that you managed to peacefully dominate this game at a high difficulty level, it makes it seem that Shaka actually has powerhouse land, :crazyeyes

O god, I just realized I replaced 'to' with '2' in the writeup. The internet is messing up my brain! :crazyeye:

Anyway, ICNP, I estimate about 15 barbs total killed using 2 axemen. I'm dominating compared to everybody else, at this point in the game Liberalism would be LONG gone in a regular game. The only reason Shaka seems to be a powerhouse is because I built the GL+Parthenon+Representation 'Mids, meaning I got some GS through+early Bureau=big science. I forgot to mention I built Sankore and spammed religious buildings. The moment I finish teching SciMethod, my beaker rate is going to halve-atleast.

Yared, you're going to get an official mention on the LSOE thread under favorite posters :mischief:

My specs:
I'm running Vista Home Premium on a 64-bit PC with a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz, 2000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
and 4GB of RAM.....and it's a laptop. If anyone would be so kind as to explain or summarize what everything inbetween 64-bit PC and 4GB of RAM actually mean, it'd be greatly appreciated. ATM, I don't have the slightest clue how good or bad it is, apart from judging based on the RAM and the 64-bit build of the PC. Why'd you want to know? Turns take anywhere from 2-5 seconds on a standard-sized GEM(This game basically). I don't dare play this map with 18 civs, let alone all 34.

Okay. I think my laptop is 2*2.52 ghz, but that it's an Intel Centrino. Otherwise it's pretty much the same.

I'm just wondering because I wasn't sure if my computer would be able to handle it but I think it would.

64-Bits just means you can use up all 4 gigabytes of that RAM.

I get that, but I don't understand everything else :p. I haven't heard any opposition to a Biology slingshot with Lib, so I'm guessing everybody's unanimous?

EDIT: I DO have a new Desktop with 6GB of RAM that I'm not supposed to use that much, but IT IS in my room, and my brother just got a new game to fill his PS3 sweetooth.............:groucho:

Still seems odd that you managed to get all those wonders... No Industrious civs then?

Your doing great though, Just take out Egypt and make Africa your Oyster!

This post is going to be rather......interesting. This is a halfway post of the current round so far. It's 1590 AD and I pulled off Biology, and teched to nationalism. I built too many muskets by accident before I even got a chance to start on the Taj, and I got the guns not butter event. Anyway, the big news is, Stalin DOWed on Hatshepsut, and quite literally, she's getting shredded and lost 2 cities already. I'm thinking DOW on Comrade Stalin as soon as he poses even the most minor threat to my expansion.

EDIT: Well, we DO have Stalin, and Hatshepsut is a sucker for that culture. I don't know how, but I did, also, I think Stalin got the GW. Only reason he could expand so much without troubles.

O right! But I don't have a map of Russia yet, just reminded me. I'm fairly sure the Volga is in Russia. Does Stalin beating down on Egypt make you sorta happy? :p But yes, Stalin did build the Great Wall. Great Wall of Russia......maybe that would have stopped the Mongols!(history joke) Stalin also built Stonehenge and ToA.

I played the round, and I'm teching to Communism. Notable features are that I'm at war with Hatshepsut and that I have a single Combat 4 Musket knocking the crap out of Hatshepsut's attempted raiding parties while Stalin devours her. I don't think Stalin will expand more into Africa, if anything, he's going to go kill Saladin. Another notable feature is that Saladin finally built a second city and that Elizabeth expanded off of Britain!

EDIT: All references to the Volga have been taken out from underneath your avatar? My Russian puns are now useless!

Part 6: A Man of Leadership

The Zulu Century

The 16th century is unanimously regarded as the century of Zulu dominance culturally, scientifically, politically, and militarily. The Zulu nation, despite it's many different faces, would unite under a believe in nationhood, fraternity, and brotherhood to Shaka, the great ruler of the Zulu. Shaka's attempts early in his lifetime to contact other civilizations proved to be a true gain for him as ancient technologies slowly seeped down the Nile into Ethiopia and from there it reached the ears of Zulu traders who scoffed at the backwardness of it all. Who needed more advanced longbowmen when the Zulu where the masters and sole owners of the secrets of Gunpowder!?

Later contact with the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut would yield much progress in religious evolution as the clergy soon championed the cause of a Zulunda theocracy. Shaka refused, as a growing number of people slowly turned their backs on their faith and began to believe in the sciences. Regardless, ideals for a Zulu theocracy would persist indefinetly via the clergy and the devote followers of Zulunda.

All was not cheery and peaceful, as the thought of Zululand today might imply. Comrade Stalin of the Russians had declared war on the Egyptians on the basis of a fundamental religious disagreement between Hinduism and Buddhism. Soon the Franks and English where invited to the dogpile, but Stalin was relatively tactical in choosing to ask Shaka for help via invading Egypt from the southern Nile. Shaka refused, on the basis that such overstretching would prove futile. Stalin furiously stormed back to Heliopolis, which had become the provisional capital of Russian Egypt.

Despite a cooling of relations with the Russians, Shaka continued to stride in knowledge, being the first man to set certain laws for scientific research. All tests must be evaluated in a controlled environment with controlled constants, variables, and quantities. Shaka was not only a great political leader, he was also one of the brightest minds Zululand had to offer. However, the resulting strictness soon stripped religious research of it's value, and great centers of study such as the Great Library became museums as it's ancient texts on alchemy, reincarnation, and Zulunda religious practices being taken seriously ceased to occur. Reportedly, Shaka had a Frankish assistant and exile by the name of Copernicus aid in his research, and the few records surviving on Copernicus indicate that he became a professor in Ulundi for the rest of his life.

More requests to join the Holy Crusade against the heathen Egyptians continued to be thrown at Zululand nearly daily, and Shaka refused to take sides, continuing to anger the Russians and Franks. Soon, the Jackal Queen came to Shaka, begging for aid in her struggle against Russia. Shaka absolutely refused to embargo the Russians, and Hatshepsut returned to Thebes, gloomily awaiting the Russian invasion. This, perhaps, may have been one of the greatest Zulu political mistakes in history, as the Russian behemoth would prove to be a true annoyance to dislodge from Egypt.

During this time, kwaDakuza continued it's rather strange tradition of Oriental craftsmanship that seemed to leak back to Zululand from recent discoveries in the Southeastern Orient. Angkor Wat would prove to be kwaDakuza's crowning achievement as the center of Zululand Orientalism. In modern day, the youngers ot kwaDakuza listen to bubblegum pop, spend their days playing videogames, and haunt the forums for so called 'anime' shows, ridiculously disproportionally portrayed orientals with a depressing attitude detailing their rather abnormal lives.

Shaka, being the supreme commander of the Zulu military, continued to pragmatically place divisions in the jungles bordering Zululand to warn off barbarian raiding parties. Musketmen, and thus gunpowder, had proven their worth again and again defending Zululand in the deserts of Somalia, and a young ambitious general from the island of Madagascar, in his crude Zulu, proposed the building of many muskets, and even more trebuchets, to invade Egypt. Shaka scoffed at the idea of Trebuchets, but he readily supported the move to leverage the Zulu military advantage in gunpowder.

The true technological domination of Zululand would not come through gunpowder, but through pesticides. Shaka Zulu had long been tinkering with chemicals, and had long since discovered easy ways to kill pests. However, it usually came at a great cost to the surrounding soil. Shaka had long an ardent proponent of an agricultural revolution within Zululand, and he would soon get his wish when an accidental stroke of luck invented the first pesticides. Crop yields soon doubled, or even tripled, and Zulu cities quickly grew in size.

The larger populations in Zulu cities resulted in a more dynamic class system within Zululand where the political divides soon became City Dwellers vs. Rural Laborers. This tension would eventually boil over in the 17th century in the Red Revolution, but the first seeds where sown. The greater concentrations of people soon gave birth to a more open people, people more willing to voice their opinions and tolerate others.

To celebrate the accomplishments of Zulu society, Shaka hosted the creation of a new city in Northern Namibia to further strengthen the Zulu. The city of eThekwini was founded, and for a long time, it would be a drain and really, just one more backward province within Zululand, but in the long run, the city would prove to be incredibly wealthy due to it's oil production, fueling Zulu industry for centuries to come.

Since 1520, Shaka had not received a true demand for war from any other civilization. The years had been peaceful, and Zulu territory had not been raided in centuries due to the excellent guards Shaka possessed. This peace would soon end as the lovely Elizabeth soon asked for Shaka's aid in war. While nothing reportedly was asked in return, Shaka 'supposedly' got his own personal reward.

Shaka immediately deployed his finest Musketmen to guard the Kenyan highlands for possible attacks from the Egyptians. Countless raiding parties where turned back as the professional Zulu armies proved to much for the weak Egyptian raiding parties. Shaka's men possessed higher ground, cover, and decades of combat experience. The Zulu nation would rally under the Musket corps, uniting the Zulu people into a coherent national identity. During this time, the leader of the Musket corps, and head of the Mossad, Shaka's beloved brother Ctsena would die from Maleria in the highlands of Kenya. Shaka, in his grief, ordered the mass importing of Frankish marble and began the construction of the grandest tomb to ever grace the earth, putting the Frankish Mausoleum of Mauselous in it's enormous shadow.

The trade relation between Frankish and Zulu merchants soon improved and diplomatic ties where soon normalized despite the differences in faith. Charlemagne and Shaka decided to cease the attempts to 1-up each other diplomatically and agreed to a series of trade deals and absolute free trade.

2 more Zulu settlements would soon be founded to further strengthen the Zulu position and Zulu pride. These two settlements would remain underpoverished but would attract many migrants from the countryside and assimilated bushmen as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So ends the Zulu century with the rise of Rural disgust with the upper class citizens of the cities......

If you do not get out of confuscianism soon i think you risk a dogpile. I think i would adopt buddhism (if it has spread to any of you cities) otherwise FR.
