Verdict due in Kosovo war crimes case

The UN war crimes tribunal will deliver its verdict today in the trial of Kosovo's former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, charged with torturing and murdering Serbs to drive them out of the region.

Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of 25 years for Haradinaj (39), a Kosovo Albanian commander of the separatist Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), as well as for his two co-accused, also senior KLA figures during the 1998-99 war with Serb forces.

Haradinaj, his uncle Lahi Brahimaj, and Idriz Balaj, the commander of the KLA's "Black Eagles" special unit, have pleaded not guilty to charges of torture, murder, rape and deportation.

Prosecutors said Haradinaj, considered a hero by many Kosovo Albanians, kept a tight control over his guerrilla force and subjected any perceived collaborators among the local population to brutal treatment.

"There was a saying: 'God in heaven, Haradinaj on earth'," prosecutor David Re said when he summed up his case in January.

The former nightclub bouncer resigned as Prime Minister in 2005, a post he held for only a matter of months, after being indicted by the UN tribunal.

During the trial prosecutors said Haradinaj led a campaign to drive Serbs and Roma from their villages, with those left behind killed and tortured.

They alleged that KLA forces had used a lake and canal area as an execution ground, dumping the bodies of their civilian victims. Investigators recovered at least 31 bodies.

Others were tortured at a makeshift prison camp, where many died as a result of their injuries.

Interesting. I wasnt even aware this trial was on.

Just goes to show it's only Serbs that are victimised in this way... oh wait...

Genocide worked both ways. For either side to claim genocide was performed exclusively by the other side is ludicrous. It just so happens that the Albanians were more successful in Kosovo (thus why there are a resounding 95% of them there).

You're claiming that the reason there's an Albanian majority in Kosovo is because they killed all the Serbs? :crazyeye: That's ludicrous, Kosovo has had an Albanian majority for more than a century.

On topic, if he's a genocidal bastard I hope he gets life.

Former bouncer? Interesting....

So it was "not guilty?"

Did he? How nice....

I'm not saying that's the sole reason (UN helped a lot too), but it contributed.

He got off

Provide link, please.

Milosevic kinda kicked the bucket during the trial. Although, it could have probably gone on in absentia.

Getting off because there's poor evidence amid allegations of witness intimidation is hardly having your name cleared though is it?

Apparently he was far better in silencing witnesses than Milocevic. I hope the EU will learn from this.

I don't have to post anything, the news it self says it all, you all (supporting Kosovo Albanians) will just have to question your stances ;)

how a Nationalist and evil Serbians can support all Hague demands and not a single witness is harmed and innocent Kosovo and Albania does everything in its power to protect its people and major part of the crowd supports Kosovo and condemns Serbia, think about it, my English Spelling isn't excellent but you get the picture ;)

A large proportion of the people on this board don't support Kosovo or Albania, so it is evident you don't know what you're talking about.

sorry, but I only count the people that post about that subject, the people not posting are considered Neutral (cause we ain't mind readers)
If you're right, and I'm wrong, why those people don't post on this subject?

No it couldn't. Dead people can not be prosecuted.
Regarding this case: The Hague tribunal showed it's true face once again.

There were a few threads about Kosovo at the time RedRalphWiggum posted this. I imagine they just weren't interested in posting in yet another one.
