News on the March
Sri Lanka conquers North Ceylon
Tamil Nadu's original peacekeeping plan is completely off the table as Sri Lankan forces launched a surprise attack against its northern neighbour, storming across the border and assaulting key cities. Although the Ceylonese army gave a spirited defence, it was ultimately overpowered and the government buildings captured. What response this will provoke from the nations that pledged support for the peacekeeping operation is unknown, but Tamil Nadu and Telangena have expressed outrage, condemning Sri Lanka for "unprovoked aggression".
Protests soften as NCSA suggests compromise
Surprised by the NCSA's willingness to negotiate, protests in Guantánamo have slackened, although provincial authorities have regained only tentative control. The government has passed on the mob's demands, which range from the return of all transferred provinces, to "nation-within-a-nation" status under the NCSA, to the retention of a sovereign Guantánamo Province. The list does not represent any unified plan by the protesters, however, and it is currently unknown if they will work through the Commonwealth government, or opt to negotiate directly with NCSA delegates.
Pacifistan begins live tests of SDI
For the first time since abruptly suspending the project twenty years ago, Pacifistan has authorized field tests of the Strategic Defence Initiative in what observers consider a promising sign the missile shield will become a reality. Tests so far have been under tightly-controlled conditions with non-volatile materials, but the fact that experimentation has moved beyond the theoretical into practical conditions constitutes the farthest step forward in two decades.
