In anticipation of the revived Monarch Student series (thanks to Giant_Wolfman), here is something to keep you hungry in the meantime:

Darius of Persia (Financial, Organized)

The start:

Obviously a top-tier UU, and I think a decent UB. Excellent traits, excellent starting location. Should be a cakewalk, you say? Not so fast. I for one am currently at 1605 AD in this game and victory is by no means assured. A couple costly diplo gaffes have really set me back, so fair warning (will post updates later).

But it has been very fun so far.

Settings: Monarch, Pangaea, normal, no huts

This should be fun, Will give this a go once ive done the new Nobles Club and whenever ive finished my current civ v game and LHC hammy. That marble makes it very tempting for me to try the oracle bline for Collusus+GLH.

Out of all neighbours, we get that one...

Victory!

My first ever diplomatic victory and it was a close run thing. I ended up at war with charlemagne towards the end allied with hammurabi and aygustus caeser. Id spent the previous few decades growing my cities for UN votes with sids sushi but hit a snag when charlemagne nuked all my cities and pillaged all my fishing boats. But a few nukes of my own and some tactical civic changes reduced charlmagnes population and got my two allies to vote for me in the for the dimplaomatic victory.

I am pleased

I'm rage quitting, here's why:

thats a couple turns after a border pop, by the way.

I warred sloppily the whole game. From the start against Manny, it was a total bloodfest, and I was just too fatigued to continue. The only thing I did right was cap Ragnar in about 8 turns of war. Got some nice cities and beelined Rifling while building the Globe Theater in my original capital. Proceeded to draft a bunch of Rifles, whicpped a bunch of cannons and and went after Rome, who was #1. Caesar was a pain, but after I took his capital and and Antium he capped too. Then I planned to hit Hammy but HRE started plotting. He was #1 now and had only started really producing Cavs, and he was cautious with both me and Hammy, so I just kept whipping and drafting to oblivion, figuring I'd better move fast. And I took two cities nearest the Roman ones I just conquered. Promptly gave them back when I moved my stack on his capital. So, I turned around and took them back again, and razed, losing precious cannons all the while. Only then did I realize I should have just waged a pillaging war against HRE and left the conquering for artillery and infantry. Simultaneously, I split stacks and DoW'd on Hammy, because he had mostly longbows and musket. Well, he whipped a rather scary Cav army and almost took a couple Roman cities that were now mine. That is what happens when you attack without spying first, I guess.

So I stumble into a peace agreement with Burger King so I can deal with Hammy, and lose my super healer along with a good chunk of my force in a quirky spot trapped inside HRE borders on the coast of a lake. And here I thought I was ready to give Emperor a go.

As you can see, a total bloodbath:
