Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth: "Who else has a question for the What-If Machine? Scruffy? Fry?"

Philip J. Fry: "Um, I have a question. What if Bender was really giant?"

Turanga Leela: "You idiot, we already saw that."

Fry: "I know. I liked it. I wanna see it again."

Professor Farnsworth: "We're not seeing it again! Ask something less stupid."

Fry: "Oh, alright. How 'bout this? What if, for the first time in my young life, I wore a different fabric-thingy on my legs than the fabric-thingy on my legs I usually wear?"

Professor Farnsworth: "That question is even stupider, and you asked it in a profoundly stupid way, but what the hell. [He turns to the What-If machine.] What would happen if Fry wore a different pair of pants today than the disgusting pair he's been wearing for the last thousand years?"

[The scene changes on the What-If machine to show the exterior of the Planet Express building. It then goes to the inside of the building, where Fry is seen entering the meeting room in a garish pair of pink pants.]

Fry: "How 'bout my new pants? You likey? Me likey."

Hermes Conrad: "Sweet bongo of the Congo, Fry! I already see enough disgusting pink around dis place on Zoidberg!"

Dr. John A. Zoidberg: "Fry, I appreciate the gesture of friendship implied by trying to emulate my beautiful carapace. We are even closer friends than I thought!"

Leela: "Fry, you look like even more of an idiot than usual."

Bender Bending Rodriguez: "Whatever."

Professor Farnsworth: "Fry, stop distracting everyone with your display of those garish pants. We have important news to discuss."

Hermes: "Yes, to cut back on costs, we're going to stop supplying the complimentary porn stash in the break room."

[The employees are relatively ambivalent, except for Scruffy.]

Fry: "The Internet's been around for over a thousand years, Hermes."

Scruffy: [puts down his issue of National Pornographic] "Scruffy is outraged. Scruffy has 30,000 shares of Planet Express, he should get some say in important business decisions and whatnot."

Leela: "Wait, who are you?"

Scruffy: "I'm Scruffy. I'm the janitor."

Leela: "I don't remember ever seeing you around here."

[Suddenly, two policemen - Smitty and URL - bust in through the door.]

Smitty: "Is there a Philip J. Fry in here?"

Fry: "I'm Philip J. Fry."

Amy Wong: "Your name is Philip?"

URL: [Him and Smitty seize Fry.] "Your ass is under arrest, fool."

Fry: "I knew I shouldn't have worn these pants!"

Smitty: "That's right, punk. You broke the law of fashion!"

Leela: "I thought you two buffoons were regular police officers, not fashion police."

Smitty: "We do some freelance work."

[Suddenly, a gang of mobsters busts in through the door and start shooting at the two cops. Their fire is erratic and completely fails to hit anyone.]

Mobster: "Is there a Philip J. Fry in here?"

Fry: "I'm Philip J. Fry."

Zoidberg: "Your name is Philip? What an unusual name for a young lady such as yourself."

Mobster: "We need those pants, Philip J. Fry!"

[More and more mobsters pile into the room, asking who Philip J. Fry is and declaring their need for the pants.]

Professor Farnsworth: [now holding a shotgun] "Get the hell out of my building!" [He shoots a mobster, who staggers back; everyone else except the Planet Express crew leaves the building.] "Fry, you idiot. You've ridiculously started a full-blown mafia war with murderous crossfire by wearing those hideous pants. Now plenty of innocent townspeople will be forced to gather and kill one person each day while the warring mobster factions slowly and methodically kill us and each other off at night."

Scruffy: "Mm, alas. Such is the price we pay to protect the sanctity of pantaloons."

Leela: "Who the hell are you?"

Code of Ethics:

Spoiler :
hMhhj.png

pAsT4.png

You must read these rules before playing, preferably multiple times.

Even if you're Bender.

Note: Rules copied from Capo and edited as necessary.

Code of Ethics:

All players are expected to adhere to the following code of ethics during play.

• Follow the Forum Rules of Civilization Fanatics Center.

• Refrain from taking and sharing screenshots relating to this mafia game during the duration of the game. This includes posts within the thread, private messages, instant messages, or any other means of communication.

• Refrain from using a double login (an additional CFC account) for any aspect of this mafia game and restrict yourself to the identity used in signing up for the game for all communication relating to this game. Double logins are against the Forum Rules anyways, and they can be gamebreaking in a mafia game.

• If you have additional abilities as a moderator or administrator on the forum, please endeavor not to use those abilities to your advantage as part of your participation in a mafia game, save where asked to do so in response to a valid moderator-related question or function. I recognize that you can't turn off those features, and I don't think this has ever been a problem anyways.

• You are allowed to privately communicate in any medium you wish, as long as the rules are followed.

• You are freely allowed to quote any private communications you have with other players, whether it be private messages, QuickTopic posts, instant messages, or some other form of communication. Beware of fabricated communications.

• However, you are strictly forbidden from quoting any private communications from me. Paraphrase. (Yes, this includes Role PMs, too.)

• Follow the rules laid out by the host for this game.

• If you believe that yourself or a fellow player have accidentally (or purposely) contravened this code and/or broken one of the rules laid out by the host, report it to the host, attaching any relevant support information.

• Have fun. Winning is certainly an important objective, but the larger purpose of these games is to have fun. It's possible to have fun and lose. It's possible to have fun and win. It's possible to not have fun and win (etc.). Fun and victory are two different objectives. Try to achieve them both!

• Be active. I designed this game for a full roster of active players. Inactive players could upset the game's balance. Besides, what is the point of signing up for a game if you do not intend to participate?

Part Deux

Setting:

Spoiler :
New New York, Earth.

The new millenium is in full swing. When the Planet Express crew decide to experiment with the What-If Machine, they discover one of the scenarios results in an all-out mafia war for control of New New York, with many prominent (and less prominent) characters of the series caught in the crossfire and forced to try and solve the problem.

(Elaborated on in more detail in the "Prologue" below.)

Team Victory Conditions:

Spoiler :
The game ends when one of the following conditions are met:

1. The Dons of all the mafia families (including replacement Dons and Dons of newborn families) are dead. Any other third-party faction(s) opposed to the town are also dead. This constitutes a Town Victory.

2. A single mafia family removes all other Dons aside from their own, as well as any other third-party faction(s) opposed to the mafia. The members of this mafia family, Don included, outnumber the rest of the living players. This constitutes a Mafia Victory for that family, and the Don of that family becomes Capo di Tutti Capi of New New York.

3. The specific victory conditions of a third-party faction have been met. These conditions typically involve the domination/outnumbering of the remainder of New New York. This constitutes a Third-Party Victory.

4. Any and all third-party role(s) are eliminated, there are less than ten players remaining, and all remaining players agree to a ceasefire. This constitutes a Draw for the town and remaining mafia family (or families).

5. Any and all third-party role(s) are eliminated, there are less than ten players remaining, all remaining players belong to a single corporation, and all remaining players agree to a ceasefire. This constitutes a Corporate Victory for that corporation.

Individual Victory Conditions:

Spoiler :
Now, a team's victory is easy to grade, but how are all of the individuals ranked? Well, I'm glad you asked. Here's the breakdown (0 - 100 point scale):

Faction Victory: 50 points. Check the above spoiler. Satisfying either condition 1, 2, 3, or 5 will result in the full 50 points awarded. A Draw results in 25 points awarded to living players, and 10 awarded to dead mafia/town players.

Rounds of Survival: 10 points. You gain more points towards a higher ranking for each round you live ("round" = 1 Day Phase or 1 Night Phase). You are counted as surviving the phase you die (e.g. the game starts on Day 1; if you are killed Night 1, that counts as 2 rounds of survival).

Participation: 10 points. [(rounds voted + rounds sending in a night order) / (rounds of survival)] * 10

Money: 10 points. The amount of money you possessed upon your death relative to the other players.

Bonus: 20 points. Each bonus award has a differing point value. There is no set limit to how many bonus awards an individual player can receive, but there is a limit of 20 points. The bonus awards are listed below:

Spoiler :

Elite Bodyguard: 6 points. Awarded to the player(s) who performed at least 4 successful protections (whether by themselves or in a group; "successful protection" meaning the target of their protection was attacked and the attack was successfully rebuffed; maximum of one "successful protection" a night, no matter how many attacks they actually rebuffed in one night), if applicable.

Wealthiest Player: 5 points. Awarded to the player who possessed the largest amount of money upon their death.

Dedicated Participant: 5 points. Awarded to the player(s) who voted every Day phase and sent in a night order every Night phase they were alive (minimum 10 rounds of survival).

Bane of the Scum: 5 points. Awarded to the player who kills the most non-town players (whether at night (by themselves or in groups) or by the lynch).

Winston Hughes Award: 2 points. Awarded to the player who does the best job roleplaying.

johnhughthom Award: 2 points. Awarded to the most entertaining player.

To the Bitter End: 1 point. Awarded to the players who survived to the end of the game.

Takhisis Award: 1 point. Awarded to the player(s) who finished the game with more than 100 posts and/or more posts than the host.

Poopenmeyer Award: 1 point. Awarded to the player who was the most corrupt Mayor (bribes taken, working with the mafia, and such).

Poopenmeyer Award, Level II: 1 point. Awarded to the player who was Mayor for the longest duration of time.

Gumshoe: 1 point. Awarded to the player who investigates the most players (whether by themselves or in a group).

I reserve the right to create more bonus awards after the game has ended.

Game Phases and Basic Gameplay:

Spoiler :
Before play begins, roles will be randomly assigned to all players. Then, each player will receive a Role PM detailing the specifics of their role.

Phase Rotation: For the most part, the usual sequence of 48-hour days and 24-hour nights will be followed. Unless otherwise noted, the deadline for all phases is at 3:00 PM US Central Standard Time.

The only business being conducted on the first day phase of the game is that of selecting a player to take on the role of the Mayor.

The first two night phases will be extended to 48 hours instead of the typical 24 hours, in order to allow players to coordinate effectively.

The host reserves the right to extend the deadline of a phase for any reason, whether it be personal or due to a lack of player activity. There are no abilities with the capability of affecting deadlines.

Day Phase: Each day, every player is expected to vote for a suspect from among the list of players. Each player, save for the Mayor, can cast one vote (see below for procedure). On odd-numbered day phases, the town also votes to select a new Mayor (see below for procedure). The host will write up the results of these votes and post them for general consumption, along with any juicy particulars about any executions. The game then proceeds to the night phase.

Certain traits or roles may allow for a specific daytime action, but these will be infrequent. Any such abilities will be explained accordingly in the individual's Role PM.

Night Phase: Every role has something to do at night – even if your choice is to do nothing. Since every role can be active, with all sorts of different actions, all players should PM the game host during each night phase to indicate their actions. The game host will calculate these actions, then write the update in the thread, then send individual night results to players.

Night Actions: Night Actions fall into four general categories - universal, active, faction, and passive.

Universal night actions are actions that all players, no matter their role, may take part in. These are the group actions. Every player has the same worth for a universal actions - in other words, a 2-person investigation requires two people, no more and no less, no matter who those two people are.

Active night actions include personal abilities. Most roles do not start out with any available active night actions to take. If a player chooses to use an active night action, he/she are not allowed to perform either a universal night action or a faction night action.

Faction night actions include a mafia family's collective ability to murder one player, as well as any third-party faction(s)'s specific abilities. If a player chooses to use a faction action (only one player from a faction is allowed to use that faction's ability each night), they may also use a universal action. Thus, a scumbag can murder someone and also take part in your protection group, eliminating the ability to solve the game by deducing who does/does not participate in universal night actions.

Passive night actions are any abilities which do not require an order in order to function. They are automatically used, and can be used in conjunction with all other night actions.

Your choice of night action(s) should be sent by PM to the host. Please note that failure to do so within the time limit or failure to properly coordinate messages among universal action groups will result in the action's failure.

PM Example: (A group of four players are attempting to kill another player.)

Working with Zack, z4ckdabeast, and Zaccino, I kill choxorn.

The action will be demoted to a two-person kill if one of the players fails to send in an order, and will fail completely if only one person sends in the order. If an action fails, the only adverse consequence is just that - failure, nothing more.

Any actions involving the attempt to kill or protect (but only if the target of the protection is actually targeted by a kill attempt) will be written into a narrative write up covering the events of the preceding night.

If a player dies during any phase, their role name, faction, and corporation will be revealed immediately therafter.

Lynch Voting and Mayor Selection:

Spoiler :
There are two types of voting during the day phase - lynch voting and Mayor selection. Each living player except the current Mayor is expected to vote to lynch one other player each day. When necessary, each living player is also expected to elect the next Mayor (who serves until he dies).

The Lynch: You may vote or not vote at your discretion. You are strongly encouraged to vote, but there is no penalty for not doing so.*

*There will be no inactivity-based WOGs or replacements this game. If you want to eliminate inactives, form a vigilante group and kill inactives. Or lynch them. I don't really care. :p

Lynch Choices:

1. Voting for a fellow player. This indicates your desire for that player to die that day.
2. Voting "Abstain". This indicates you have no official preference for the outcome of the day's lynch (or lack thereof).
3. Voting "No Lynch". This indicates your desire for no players to die that day.

To be counted, a vote MUST be posted in bold typeface. Anything else, such as dressing it up with a "Vote:" preface or styling it in an accusation, is unnecessary.

If you desire to change your vote, simply vote for another player or choice.

A retraction without a re-vote will count as an "abstain" by default, as will any invalid vote (such as voting for a dead player, the host, or editing a post containing a vote).

If you abbreviate the name of the person for whom you are voting, please do so in a clear and consistent fashion. If I can't figure it out, I will count it as invalid.

These votes are, of course, part of the public discussion in the thread and available for all to evaluate. However, there is a possibility for apparent discrepancies in the public tally and the "real" tally, so to speak.

Selecting the Mayor: Selecting the next Mayor is done in a similar manner as lynching. The rules for voting are the same, except that the vote is required to be in bolded blue, or else it will not count.

Choices:

1. Vote for a fellow player. This indicates your desire for that player to be elected Mayor.
2. Vote "Abstain". This indicates you have no official preference as to who is elected the next Mayor.
3. Vote "Vacant". This indicates your desire for the position to be vacant.

The Mayor's lynch vote carries the weight of an additional 0.5 points, in order to break ties. If there is still a tie at the end of a Day phase, the Mayor decides whether to kill all, none, or only one of the tied suspects.

Playing While Dead:

Spoiler :
You are encouraged to keep playing and participating once your character has died, whether you desire to try and contribute to your family/faction's victory in any way you can, or just be silly.

Restrictions:

1. The dead may post in the public game thread; however, they are cannot vote, select, or carry out any night actions of any kind.

2. Dead players may not reveal any specifics concerning their role, family, or faction at any time.

3. Dead players may not quote from a PM unless that PM has been posted in the public thread by a living player.

4. Dead players may not reveal, recount or allude to their previous night actions (or results thereof in the case of investigations) publicly or privately – even to confirm a previously made public or private reveal.

5. Dead players may not communicate privately with any living players, with the exception of dead scumbags posting in their family's QuickTopic.

PLEASE BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS! :)

Universal Abilities:

Spoiler :
The universal abilities are as follows:

Universal Abilities:

Spoiler :
With 1 other player:

• Investigate one player. A successful investigation will show the target's corporate alignment (which corporation they belong to) and their income from that corporation the previous day.

• Attack one player. A successful attack will injure the target.

• Protect one player. A successful protection will protect the target from most kills; if the target is attacked, they will instead be wounded.

• Roleblock one player. A successful roleblock will prevent the target from performing a universal action.

With 3 other players:

• Investigate one player. A successful investigation will show who, if anyone, that player targets that night.

• Attack one player. A successful attack will kill the target.

• Protect one player. A successful protection will protect the target from most kills.

• Roleblock one player. A successful roleblock will prevent the target from performing an active or faction night action.

With 5 other players:

• Investigate one player. A successful investigation will show whether the target is "town", "mafia", or "other". One of the participants in this action will die (randomly selected).

• Attack one player. A successful attack will kill the target, as well as bypassing most protections and roleblocks.

• Protect one player. A successful protection will protect the target from all kills, as well as killing one of the attackers if the attackers are a smaller group.

• Roleblock one player. A successful roleblock will prevent a player's entire group from performing a universal action, as well as preventing the target from performing a role action.

Note: Just because a player is performing a universal action does not mean they aren't doing anything else. In that sense, you can't solve the game spreadsheet-style by forcing a scumbag to be part of your protection group instead of killing people, because he can certainly do both.

Corporations:

Spoiler :
There will be five corporations, consisting of eight players each. Although some of the owners might actually be owners of corporations in the Futurama universe, for many different reasons, not all owners are necessarily actual owners of corporations in the Futurama universe; furthermore, I will allow each owner to name their corporation, but they are explicitly forbidden from naming their corporation after an actual Futurama corporation.

Payment: The owner of the corporation will receive $500 dollars per day for every employee working for his corporation. The owner will then use this money to pay everyone, including himself, as he sees fit. He can pay everyone equally, he can use a scale... whatever. Anything is fair game.

Employment: The owner also has the right to fire employees. However, the owner must give the fired employee a one-time severance package equal to the following formula:

fired employee's sum of total wages earned for the corporation / number of days the individual worked there

Of course, if someone dies, no severance is required...

The owner is also responsible for assigning positions to his employees (i.e. CEO, CFO, President, Personnel, Intern, Manager, etc.).

The owner is not allowed to leave his corporation. However, employees of a company are free to resign at any time (in which case, they will receive no severance) or to flee to other corporations. If they wanted to, a player could even refrain from joining any corporation, and instead choose to do freelance work ("Pay me x amount of money and I'll do x for you). Players can even prepare resumes ("I've performed these night actions and have the capability to perform these night actions, I've shown I'm intelligent and capable beyond what I can do at night, these are the skills I can bring to your corporation if you hire me.") to post publicly or send to others in private. Owners can offer signing bonuses ("if you come to my corporation, I'll give you x dollars up front") to potential new recruits.

There is no limit to the number of employees a corporation can have.

Forming a new corporation: If you are unsatisfied with your current situation at the corporation you currently work for, or even if you aren't, you can start up a new corporation. To do so, follow these steps:

1. You must quit your former career and thus become unemployed.
2. You must convince at least three other players to quit their former careers and join your upstart corporation.
3. The four (or more) of you must send me a message declaring your intentions to form a corporation, telling me who is the owner.
4. The four (or more) of you must pool together and pony up $1,000 per member to start the corporation.

Miscellaneous: An owner has no inherent invincibility of his own, but he can certainly pay individuals to be his personal bodyguards.

The corporations will be listed on the front page, along with the positions and roles of the members (not the CFC names, the role names).

Money:

Spoiler :
Money factors into the final rankings of all players at the end of the game. The more money you have, the higher your rank.

You can earn money from your day job at the corporation... and also from your Don, if you're a mafioso.

You can use money in the game to bribe other players in any manner you see fit. To give money to another player, simply send me a PM detailing how much money you wish to send and who you wish to send it to. The transaction will take place at the end of the phase.

When a player dies, their money stays with their corpse.

Mafia Families:

Spoiler :
At the beginning of the game, there will be four mafia families each consisting of four members each.* These families are set at the beginning of the game - there is no way for any mafia family to recruit new members.

*Before you cry foul at game balance, keep in mind the following:

• Star Wars Mafia: A New Hope had a similar number of non-Innocents.

• There will be a lot of crossfire.

• The town is powerful.

• I've hosted a lot of (fairly well) balanced games, and thus am competent at balancing games.

Don: The Don (or "Capo") is the leader of an individual mafia family. They generally do not kill at night, instead delegating that task to their underlings.

The Don receives an income of $200 per living member of his family. However, unlike the owner of a corporation, the Don is required to pay his family members a specific amount of money each night.

If the Don of a family dies, the highest-ranking member of the family is promoted to be the new Don. If only one other person remains in the family after the Don dies, that family is dissolved and the remaining mafioso becomes an unaffiliated neutral.

Underboss: The Underboss is the second-highest ranking member of an individual mafia family. The Don is their direct superior.

Made Man: A made man is at the bottom of the family's food chain. They typically do the dirty work for the family.

Forming your own family: If you are a former mafioso who was forced to become an unaffiliated neutral, you can try forming your own mafia family. To do so, follow these steps:

1. You must be a former mafioso who was forced to become an unaffiliated neutral after your old family died off.
2. You must convince at least one other player to join your upstart family.
3. The two (or more) of you must send me a message declaring your intentions to form a family, telling me who is the Don, the Underboss, and Made Men (if any).
4. The two (or more) of you must pool together and pony up $500 per member to start the family.

This will serve as the master set of rules for this game. If you have any questions or comments, please post them here in the sign-up thread.

Okay, so I think "The Intergalactic Battle for Middle-Earth" is a bit of a mouthful, and thus am looking for an alternate name. I turned to the gimmick I've used in several previous games of using a song title for the title of the game (or at least part of it). I had a decent-sized list, but I've narrowed it down to only two options:

Across the Universe (Beatles) -- Since the Star Wars group moves across the universe to come to Middle-Earth.

OR

None Shall Pass (Aesop Rock) -- Pretty close to Gandalf's famous line.

None Shall Pass
