I'm re-configuring Stairway to Heaven II into a completely new series, called "The Reaping". The plan is to have several 'chapters' setting the stage for and leading up to the grand finale, called "The Reaping" (think of the movies leading up to The Avengers).
The games will blend concepts/ideas from several games ideas I had, such as "None Shall Pass" and "Stairway to Heaven II", of course with new concepts and twists thrown in.
The storyline will be quite extensive. It covers the time period from the end of Zack Mafia IV / Stairway to Heaven up until the originally planned Stairway to Heaven II. Each chapter focuses on a different area of the world, and the players decide the outcome of each. These all lead up to the battle for Heaven originally planned for Stairway to Heaven II.
Zack and Death's original plans for a peaceful unification of the globe go awry when the planet erupts into widespread violence and chaos independent of their machinations. They must adapt to the current situation in order to conquer the planet and, in turn, conquer Heaven.
Chapter 1 will focus on the Americas. The plot is still in the early stages, but here's the basic outline I have for the background story for this game (although I have a basic idea of what goes on in the rest of the world in response to the following, I will not outline it here, instead focusing on only the Americas):
November 2020. In an election with no historical precedent, President-Elect Redmond wins an overwhelming victory as a third-party candidate of the Freedom Party, crushing both his Democratic and Republican opponents. Redmond wins on a promise to fix the spiraling economy and reverse the nation's reputation as a socially backwards pariah with radical left-wing change; he essentially promises to turn America into a social democracy. He embodies liberal ideals, with a reputed Political Compass score of -6.34 economic left/right and -4.32 social libertarian/authoritarian.
January 2021. After his inauguration address, the Secret Service betray and murder President Redmond, setting the stage for the ensuing military coup to seize control of the USA.
November 2021. After almost a full year of rapid military expansion, the new jingoist military dictatorship invades the Caribbean islands, with plans to expand into Mexico and South America. Foreign possessions (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.) have been fully annexed.
December 2021. In defiance of the invasion, the former states of Washington and Oregon merge to form "Cascadia", then secede from the Union and immediately defect to Canada.
July 2022. The Caribbean has been annexed by the US, Cascadia has been razed and annexed, Canada capitulates and becomes part of the US.
December 2022. All of North and Central America has been annexed by the US.
February 2023. The USA invades South America.
April 2023. The US suffers several revolutions, forcing it to prematurely end its invasion of South America.
November 2023. The US is fully engulfed in civil war. Canada, the People's Republic of America (+ Cascadia + California + Nevada), Mexico, and the Holy Republic of Deseret (Utah + Idaho) all fight for independence, while the remaining states fight either to take back control of the country (the Revolution) or to preserve its current state (the Loyalists).
March 2024. The Loyalists begin their program for genetically enhanced and cloned super soldiers, the Immortals (think the Spartans in Halo).
December 2024. The Loyalists have made humongous gains in the war, owing to the overwhelming success of the Immortals program.
June 2025. The Immortals rebel against their masters, quickly undoing all of the gains the Loyalists had made up to this point. The Immortals have split into four factions: the Dragons (those remaining loyal to the Loyalists), the Messiahs (those defecting to the Revolution), the Templars (seeking to replace the Loyalists with themselves), and the Fallen (those out only for themselves).
May 2030. The dust has settled. Canada, the People's Republic of America, Mexico, and the Holy Republic of Deseret have achieved independence. The Fallen have been purged. The Loyalists, and by extension the Dragons, have been destroyed. However, the fight for the rest of America is still raging. The Revolution is losing to the Templars, in large part due to only one Messiah remaining.
June 2030. Three Templars are tasked with a very special mission: kill the last Messiah.
