Capto Iugulum: 1920 - 1939

Japan votes for Sevastopol, Russia

TO: Americas and Africa
FROM: Brazil

Dear friends*,

You are all being offered, for the limited time of the year of 1930, the option to purchase the greatest fighter aircraft in the world: The P-27 Dragonslayer. This plane, with a top speed and range beyond that of any other aircraft of this kind**, is more than enough protection for any regime in the world, but we're not offering it to the world, oh no. We're offering it to you. From Vinland to Chile and Egypt to Oranjien, Brazil is offering these aircraft at a wonderfully low cost per squadron of 35 EP, or 100 EP for 3 Squadrons. Now, don't let those European arms pushers fool you. They have nothing to offer like your good friends in Rio do.

The shackles of European domination are forever removed from thee, children of the world. Brazil is here, with great respect for the colored peoples of the African continent, with presents and joy. Come as you are, ask and ye shall receive.

*no Proletarists
**strapping rockets to pilots is not worth noting

As much as Adjuuramark would like to take this offer, our budget is already compromised for the next few years.

Denmark catagorically rejects Scandinavian aggression and their aims. We furthermore direct all members of the Council of European States to the CES forums to read our missive on the matter.

Denmark also votes for Sevastopol for the 1932 Olympics.

This matter is not up for international arbitration. The Skagerrak is not Danish sovereign territory, and qualifies as international waters. You will permit our merchant ships free and unimpeded access to the Skagerrak or we will ensure it using lethal force.

You actively sailed into Danish waters and refused to comply with legitimate authority. You then flew into Danish airspace and actively assaulted it and its aircraft.

That falls well within the sphere of the Security Council of the Council of European States for arbitration.

The Skagerrak are international waters. However, the Workers' Commonwealth was glad to suffer searches by Danish ships on the occasion that Scandinavian vessels entered Danish waters. We have discovered that these searches are for the purpose of seizing the cargo of civilian merchant ships and preventing our commercial vessels from using the Skagerrak for transport of goods and services. When the same civilian merchant vessels refused to comply with your seizures, you illegally fired upon them with a cannon that we must remind all listening is meant to be used to destroy bunkers. We cannot adequately comprehend the horrible deaths you have inflicted upon innocent, civilian citizens of the Workers' Commonwealth.

The Workers' Commonwealth has responded adequately and reasonably to your heinous and unprovoked act of aggression. If you continue to impede the traffic of civilian ships through the Skagerrak by illegally seizing their cargoes and confiscating the ships, as well as continue to use military force to threaten our citizens, we will continue to police the Skagerrak with aircraft.

We do not consider any international inquiry or arbitration necessary or valid. If other nations wish to take up arms with us against the mass murder of civilians by the Danish government then so be it, but this remains a matter between the Workers' Commonwealth and the Kingdom of Denmark.

You will permit civilian vessels access to the Skagerrak.

To: Paraguay
From: Argentina

We are glad that our ally Paraguay pledges to maintain the separation of church and state that is one of the foundations of democratic republicanism. However, we must echo the Papal States' recent statements regarding hatred of Argentine products for being Argentine. If you do not want to see an Argentine film, then do not go to a theater that is currently showing an Argentine film. If you must protest the content of a film, as guaranteed by your constitutional freedom of speech, then do so without rioting. As for attacks upon Protestant preachers and intimidation of non-Catholic voters, this strikes at the very heart of peaceful democratic governance. Why should anyone have to fear for practicing their beliefs? Certainly the nations of the Americas have no need to import centuries of religious animosity from Europe, our nations have become immensely peaceful and prosperous because of our liberal, democratic republicanism. Do not let the rule of law slip; assault is assault, battery is battery, whether committed by a Catholic or by a Protestant.

Re: Religion in Argentina

Since the foundation of the Argentine Republic, freedom of religion has been guaranteed by our Constitution. The state only acts to insure that every citizen is able to maintain this freedom. This toleration that was encoded in the Argentine constitution has served us well in the past, serves us well in the present, and will do so in the future. This liberal policy, encoded by the Catholic founders of Argentina, has insured the peace and prosperity in Argentina this past century, and has kept our public national interests separated from our private religious convictions. All religions and sects are allowed to practice in Argentina within the bounds of our laws; it makes no difference if they are Catholic or Protestant or something in between. Assault and murder by one group upon another will not be tolerated; those who engage in acts of violence will be prosecuted.

To: Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay
From: Argentina

All elements of republican government modeled after the Argentine, Brazilian, or United States have guaranteed some form of freedom of religion. The current attitude of promoting one doctrine as constitutional or official is a betrayal of your minority populations. Why should the neutrality of our governments to religion be abandoned when it has always served well in the past? Catholic practice has never been constrained in our nations; why adopt Old World enmities and medeival practices when we do not have to?

As it expired under the Treaty of Christiansburg last year, would Oranjien desire extending our defensive alliance? Also, may we consider extending our current naval basing rights as well?

OOC: So what distinguishes Brazilian and Traditional Varukorgboll?

To: Argentina
From: The Holy See

The Holy See, being as it is the Authoritative and Sovereign Manifestation of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church (as compared to its separate role as the government of the Papal States) expresses its gratitude that the government of Argentina will ensure the safety of the Apostolic Visitors as they assess the state of the Church in Argentina in order to determine the extent of any ecclesiastical corruption that may or may not be present in Argentina.

We would also like to reaffirm to you that this matter is an entirely ecclesiastical one pertaining to the internal concerns of the Catholic Church, and that any concerns that exist regarding the Apostolic Visitation, or the Holy See, violating Argentine law or seeking to subvert the states legitimate governing authority are completely unfounded. The Church has always and will always respect the law of the land so long as it does not seek to proclaim evil as good. As it is written, render unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar and render unto God what belongs to God. This being so even as men who are members may err (for the Church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum of saints) and act in ways contrary to the divine will.

Finally, we would ask that Argentina continues, along the lines of its statements to us to ensure our visitation into the local Church does not intrude outside of its legitimate purview, to respect the sovereign right of nations to determine the manner of their own governance so long as the genuine God-given rights and dignities of all human persons are respected. This includes respect for nations that choose to uphold Catholic or moralist principles in law and governance and proclaim the One True Faith as the foundation for right governance.

TO: Argentina
FROM: Brazil

Brazil's own freedom is religion is not endangered by the Moralist movement. Catholicism and the Catholic majority have not expressed, and never will express, wishes of infringing on the rights of the protestant population. Moralism forwards unity within Catholic nations by sharing similar religious views and putting those into government policy, such as assisting the poor and improving the well-being of the population as a whole. It is not legal for the Moralist party in Brazil to attempt to alter the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom as set forth by the stalwart Catholic Emperor Pedro I. It is indeed not Christian at all to behave in such a manner, and the Brazilian Moralist Party does not condone efforts to remove religious freedom, especially in a world where so many Catholics are suppressed by regimes lacking it. When a nation has a majority Catholic population, as viewed with Moralist doctrine, it is that majority's responsibility to work for the greater good of all citizens, not just fellow Catholics.

OOC: So what distinguishes Brazilian and Traditional Varukorgboll?

Varukorgboll is played by two teams of six players each. The object of the game is to throw an inflated 8-inch ball through a vertically-suspended hoop two feet in diameter, suspended with a centre point 11 feet in the air. The ball can only be gripped by one hand at a time, and it cannot be held tightly against the body. The game is physical enough that light padding is usually worn by the players.

The play area is a rectangle roughly 60 by 80 feet in size. Due to Vinland's cold winters, there are indoor and outdoor variations of the game, so the game was traditionally played on grass in the summer and in indoor wood-floored gymnasia in the winter. The competitive international version of Varukorgboll is played indoors.

The Brazilian version has a significantly larger area of play, which makes the game less positional and more about running and passing through open areas. It also makes the game less about strategy and positioning. There are also several minor rule changes, which have not been expanded upon by either EQ or Luckymoose. Lucky stated something along the lines of his version being designed for the superior fitness and faster running of the Brazilian people, or something like that. :p

At any rate, the Giant Vinlandic Reference Post has two entries under the sports section which discuss Varukorgboll.

Varukorgboll in the 1920s

The third decade of the 20th century has seen the sport of Varukorgboll grow by leaps and bounds in popularity. While it has maintained its dominant presence in Scandinavia and Vinland, it has grown in prominence in anglo-America. The United States have increasingly become a power in the sport, challenging their once-unbeatable Vinlandic rivals. At the same time Varukorgboll competition has begun to gain traction in Florida and Jacksonia, although neither of these nations have yet to make a major impact on the international 'Varookaball' scene.

Perhaps most significantly, the sport has finally begun to grow into a global phenomenon. With the collapse of the Kongo, the sport of Varukorgboll has come to be a uniting factor, and an outlet for peaceful national pride in the nascent countries of Central Africa. Even South America, long a fortress of Balompie second only to Europe itself, has begun to embrace the sport.

The tales of the decade are many. Halvor Bjørgen, captain of the Nya Göteborg Tigrar, has perhaps become Vinland's first athletic superstar, leading the representatives of Vinland's largest city through a decade of unprecedented success, amassing four Two Nations Cups (Vinland/USA Championship), fwo Atlantic Cups (World Championship), and five King's Cups (National Championship). Across the border, Chester Oldfield attained similar stature. As the young, dynamic and supremely athletic captain of the Duluth Delvers, Oldfield's squad came to dominate American competition, winning six President's Cups (National Championship), and five Two Nations Cups. The Delvers even broke through into global competition. They suffered a heartbreaking defeat against the Elite Proletarist Squad Stockholm Röd in 1923, but returned in 1925 to play what some consider to be the finest and closest series of Varukorgboll ever played, defeating Bjørgen's Tigrar to become the first American team to ever hold aloft the Atlantic Cup.

While the international scene flourished and evolved, things were also changing rapidly in Vinland. Sammanström VK, the traditional superpower of the sport, found itself gradually losing ground to the better-funded teams to the East, namely the Nya Göteborg Tigrar and Sjöstad IF. Legendary rivalries broke out as VK, the original professional Varukorgboll Club, the champions of the home city of the sport itself, found themselves being defeated by teams who they'd once viewed as little more than pesky upstarts. A three-way competition defined Vinlandic sports throughout the decade: Nya Göteborg versus Sjöstad versus Sammanström. Nya Sverige versus Dammark versus Västermark. East versus South versus West.

At the end of the decade, Varukorgboll finds itself more competitive, more professionalized, and more widespread than ever before. In many ways, the future remains unclear. Will Vinland continue to maintain its dominance of the sport? Will Varukorgboll attain the stature of Balompie? Will it exceed it?

Only time can tell. Until then, play on!
