An oxymoron, at least in recent years.
One politician I can think of who routinely went above and beyond his job description is Svend Robinson, who used to be the Member of Parliament for Burnaby (in British Columbia). He did a lot of things, from protesting the logging of Clayquot Sound, to advocating for - and witnessing - the assisted suicide of Sue Rodriques (she had MS). He also refused to divulge the identity of the doctor who administered the lethal drugs.
