Strategy:
Historical victory is possible on marathon speed, but requires some luck and planning. I guess the victory on epic is possible as well, but is probably very difficult to arcieve. It is IMO impossible to win a historical victory on normal speed, see why below.
Marathon speed means that civilizations expand much faster and often have larger armies. This is why I didn't run a 600 AD start but chose a 1700 AD start istead. More predictable, less colonies and fewer armies in the new world.
1. Spawning period (1778 - 1810). One of the colonial powers must declare war on you on spawn so you get additional armies. If it doesn't happen, reload. The starting army must be enough to conquer New Orleans and/or Saint Louis, as well as Saint John. This should be the main goal to archieve during the starting period. Conquer Cuba and other Carribbean islands if possible. The galleons one gets from the start may hide in your cities at the end of turn, use this advantage! Settlers go to Chicago, Denver (on oil) and west coast. Washington builds Statue of Liberty from turn 1, workers improve a couple of tiles near Washington, NY, Boston, Charleston, and then RUSH to Denver. It will be your main production powerhouse and it must start producing units ASAP.
2. Interwar period (1810 - 1860). After the initial war for independence you will need some time to improve your land, build some important buildings, and, most important, revive your army, which is probably pretty small after all the conquests. The focus should stay on the military. Change economy civic from Merchantilism to Free Market after acquiring Corporation.
Your economy should improve after 1840s, and your army stack should now consist of plenty of units, some of them very experienced. But you still have Spanish colonies (Cuba and Guatemala), other Carribean, and Mexico to defeat. So do you go and conquer them? No, you should do something completely different
3. Operation 'Secure Pentagon'. (1860 - 1875). The hardest UHV is IMO not securing absence of Europeans in North America by 1900, which is actually not so difficult on marathon, but the second UHV, which requires you to build four world wonders. The Statue of Liberty is NOT a problem - no one else is interested in building it so you will get is without any problems. The real pain in the neck is Penthagon. Germany WILL research Assembly Line before you and it WILL build Pentagon in Frankfurt long before you will be able to build your first infantry. So how do you prevent Germany from building Pentagon? You do it in a truly american way. You go and conquer Frankfurt
This is done by making a coupe of alliances with some of the Europeans which are close to Germany, build galleons, and use them to transport your army to Europe. When you are ready, declare war on Germany and capture Frankfurt ASAP. By this time you should have Railroad which means you may build Machine Guns. Promote some of your grenadeers with City Defence promotion to Machine Guns (preferably 3-4), and place them in occupied Frankfurt. Then it will be like a fortress.
In my game I allied myself with Turkey and Austria, sent my army to Archangelsk and then to Poland and to Vienna (Spain didn't want to OB with me). Then it was piece of cake to capture Frankfurt.
Frankfurt under your control will starve to population 2 in 10-12 turns, after that you may be sure that Germany will not build Pentagon. But it will give you 70-80 gold per turn if it has all the money buildings, so it is worth keeping until some congress will take it away from you or it will culture flip to Germans.
4. Manifest Destiny (1875 - 1895). Bring your army back to US after Frankfurt has starved for long enough. Use this army as well as the units you've been making during the previous years to conquer Guatemala, Carribean, other Spanish colonies which may be there as well as Mexico. Your fleet will problably not be strong by that time so use the good old 'hide in the harbor'-tactics with your ships.
5. Securing the supremacy (1895 - 19..) If you was lucky enough and did everything right, by this time you should be one of the mightiest countries in the world with a decent and modern army and a strong economy. You should have both Statue of Liberty and Pentagon built in your cities. Denver should have Ironworks by now and be able to build infantry in two - three turns. So basically you've already won. The further steps include research of Industrialism and then Mass-Media, building the remaining wonders, and securing the oil. In my game i conquered Colombia (= one oil), Mexico (=one offshore oil), and Lagos (=one oil in jungle). I also settled/conquered Eastern Canada (= two oil), settled Alaska (=one oil), as well as Eastern Australia (=one offshore oil). There is also two oil in the continental US so I only needed one more oil for victory, which i found in Masqat (Arab Emirates). I needed Biology for the Nigerian oil and Plastics for offshore platforms, which took some time to research.
