The Cold War of Italy

January 1950
Benvenuto, signore e signori! I am Luigi Einaudi, Presidente della Repubblica Italiana. I’m newly elected and already missing the monarchy we voted off 1946; I would have been proud to serve as Prime Minister under King Umberto II and I’m sure we wouldn’t have the problems we have now... Like the starvation in Milan and Taranto? No more mister nice signor, I’m sacking the governors and sorting the mess out myself. Rome has to share some of the lands.

What about our science then? Ok, it turns out that we know naathing, naaathing! But I bet the Warsaw Pact does... I'll send my spies. What, I don't have spies? Send a "diplomat" then! Sheesh... He did good though, he got me Post War Nationalism for 250 gold. Hell yeah, forza Italia!!! Now that's one tech closer to the good stuff; Main Battle Tanks and Airborne Warfare. But we need tanks now, so I order my scientists to get cracking on Civil Engineering. 18 turns??? Ok, professore... just keep reading will'ya?

What about my armed forces then? Five regular Italian postwar infantry divisions, three elite M-3's (must be Bersaglieri or something), two Abruzzi class cruisers and two Benson class destroyers. No Air Force. Crap. I'll need tanks, artillery, aircrafts and transports to regain territory lost during WW2. Yugoslavia and North Africa looks like primary targets to me; Yugo because I have a score to settle with Tito over Istria, and Africa because that upstart Idris thinks he's the rightful ruler of Libya.

BTW, is that americans on Mallorca? Isn’t that a little early in the season?

Mohammed Zahir Schah of the Iran/Afghani/Pakistani wants wines in exchange for sharing islam with us. I don't want to upset His Holiness the Pope, so I decline but give Zahir Schah 10 bucks to make him like me. It fails, he's still polite.

A British Daring class destroyer passes south of Sicilia on its way eastwards.

February 1950
Our only worker starts mining the aluminium SE of Rome.

One British light aircraft carrier escorted by two Darings and followed by a sub goes westwards. The Inglese can't make up their mind eh? How did they win the war..?

Mars 1950
Mao wants wines for nothing, well we lost our concession in Tientsin 1943 so bugger that! War? Come and get it, you yellow red! Yellow red is orange. Yeah that's right, I'm calling you a fruit!

April 1950
Arab League wants 81 gold for nothing, backs off when I tell him off. Good to know at least someone respects my authoritay.

Spanish infantry is seen NW of Milan. What a crazy colour to chose as camouflage, they might as well chosen pink!

Two French destroyers is sighted west of Mallorca and four French infantry divisions crosses the border into the Italian Alps north of Venice. The hills are alive with the sound of marching. I'm not gonna bother my neighbour about them, and besides I want to see where they're going.

May 1950
I wonder if the Chinese will come through the Suez Canal? Better send the Marina Militare Italiana! Two cruisers and two destroyers are now on their way to the Suez. Meets British Daring, exchanges greetings. Good that we're not enemies anymore, but I'd like our confiscated battleships back thank you so very much!

The Daring continues west, are they gathering the whole Royal Navy at home..? Could it be the Soviets?

Crikey!!! The French superbattleship Richelieu just passed on its way to Marseilles! The size of her, she's bloody enormous! I want one of those so bad... The two destroyers followed her. The four French infantry disappears back to their homeland. Forgot something?

June 1950
My navy arrived at the north entrance to the Suez Canal, no Chinese there! Phew. Go through it boys and take a look at our old provinces in East Africa. They find international water between Israel and the Arab League. Crap! What if the Chinese takes the Panama Canal instead??? Then I'm in the wrong place! Nah, it's shorter through the Suez. Hmm, I wonder if the Chinese has a navy?

A British sub passes us in the Canal, another one for the gathering eh?

July 1950
Our brave sailors enters the Indian Ocean, looking longingly at our lost Africa Orientale Italiana... One day...

Hey, I wonder if someone would pay for our wines? The Spaniards, the French and the Germans have their own, but the Greeks might want some! 150 gold? After some haggling it’s 174 so ok, Alexander, I'll take it. Zahir Schah also wants some, for 80 and 11/turn. I manage to close the deal at 87 and 14/turn, and Zahir Schah turns gracious! Well here's looking at you too, kid! Now I only wonder what the muslims use wines for?

The Arabs are annoyed, they think we're too close to Aden. Well, as a matter of fact we are. Well, sorry, alright?

August 1950
I'm making a decision that might have dramatic political consequences: I order my navy to keep going to China! If the Chinese mess with my ships they'll mess with the whole damned... thingy I'm member in. What's it called, neighbour? Ok, Organisation du Traité de l’Atlantique Nord, OTAN for short, thanks Vincent!

Hmm, I'd better take this treaty thing seriously then. The Germans will be in a true pickle if the Reds go west, so I better send some support. After successfully negotiating Right of Passage with France and West Germany (thanks Vinnie and Teddy!) I give two infantry divisions their marching orders: it's straight to the border to take up positions on the Fur Hills SW of the Soviet airbase. My boys go by rail all the way, and are now watching the Soviet VDV Airborne infantry on the other side.

September 1950
Talked to Sukarno of Indonesia about letting my ships through, and we agreed to give each other Right of Passage. He turned gracious on me and hey, it's not likely I'm gonna see hordes of Indonesians nicking my grapes and spilling Sambal Oelek on my pasta, is there? My Navy takes up positions east of Medan.

A British submarine is sighted south of Palermo, probably the same one my brave sailors reported meeting in the Canal.

October 1950
The time of retribution draws near as my navy passes the coast of Indochina... Ngo Dinh Diem of South-East Asia gives us Right of Passage.

He also suddenly declares war on the Chinese! He must have seen our great navy and thought he needed to beat us to the goodies. The Chinese must have counter-attacked, because war declarations from the whole Western world follow.

I'm outraged! The Israelis were caught trying to plant a spy in Rome! The insolence!!! Thank God that Mossad is at the beginning of their learning curve... That's it, no more delicatessen for you David! I hope that idiot spy was REALLY expensive for you.

November 1950
My navy is about to fire our first shots in anger, or at least in slight irritation. Our ships are now immediately SE of Xiamen, their primary target is the alumninium mine NE of Xiamen and secondary target is the iron mine SW of Xiamen. The light cruiser Luigi di Savoia Duca degli Abruzzi fires first; her ten 6" guns spew fire and the aluminium mine turns into a ghostly cratered moonscape, devoid of life. The cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi won't be outdone by her sister and turns the iron mine into a rubble heap, thereby also isolating the southernmost Chinese city Zhangjiang from the rest of China. Hey Mao, now you're beginning to wish you had asked us nicely, right?

The destroyers Artigliere and Aviere covers the withdrawal of the naval strike force to the SW of Taipeh. On our radars we can see an American carrier group on the other side of Formosa (yeah, damn good radars!); one Midway class and one Essex class carrier escorted by only two destroyers. Luckily for them we've been allies for seven years now. Now we can only wait and see if China has an air force or a navy to strike back with. I wonder if our sailors is under an US Navy Combat Air Patrol?

French forces are on the move; four French infantry divisions goes east through northern Italy, and at sea the mighty Richelieu leaves Marseilles together with three destroyers.

In China things are heating up; the city of Fuzhou becomes target of an American air offensive. First a squadron of B-29's bombs, followed by Skyraiders from the carrier group, and finally three squadrons of P-51's based in Japan.

Josef Stalin decides this is a good time to blackmail the Repubblica Italiana, 100 gold for peace. A no could mean the beginning of the third world war, and an almost certain death for our soldiers on Fur Hill on the German border. And if I say yes? Then most of my allies would send their military forces away to fight China, while the Warsaw Pact can keep building and wait for the perfect moment to strike West Europe. Better roll the dice now... Signor Stalin, either you come in peace or you go in pieces. Alea iacta est! The Soviet Union declares war on us.

My scientists report that they're finally ready to teach the Italian people Civil Engineering. First priority then must be to build the Public Works in order to increase production and gain more workers to repair coming war damages. I seize the opportunity to turn the almost done M-3 in Rome into Public Works (don't ask me how, I'm a politician and not an engineer), and they are completed in the same month. The Roman production then turns to churn out M-4 Shermans, because they will be needed...

December 1950
My naval force reports that another American carrier group has arrived SE of Formosa, this time with one Essex, two Baltimore class heavy cruisers and one destroyer. Feels good to know they're on my side.

I order my navy to go NE of Fuzhou and bombard the two remaining roads to that town. The roads disappear into clouds of dust under the wrath of my cruiser guns, and Fuzhou is now isolated. But I want Mao to see what can of whoopass he opened, so I order my navy to proceed into the Yellow Sea. Next target for our 6" guns will be the vicinity of Peking!

No news on the Western front, since the Soviets seem to ignore the presence of Italians at their border. Our brave boys use the respite to dig in properly. If only my lazyass worker was done with the aluminium mine I would send him to build a proper fortress on Fur Hill. At least I can send reinforcements to Germany, so I order one of my elite M-3 Half-Track APC's to join the infantry on the border of Evil.

Two Spanish infantry divisions is seen crossing the border into Warsaw Pact territory south of Dresden. Going to fight the Chinese I presume. Poor guys, they're in for a nasty surprise soon...

Another two French infantry divisions go east crossing Northern Italy, but the French Navy goes west towards Gibraltar Strait. Where are they going? Just longing to smell some atlantic air again?

Three US Air Force P-51 squadrons bomb Shanghai. I wonder what their B-29 is doing right now and who it’s doing it to?

Fate is a trickster; just because I miss the sight of a B-29, three Soviet copies bomb my troops on Fur Hill! My elite M-3 takes a hit but I'd say we got off easy, thank you Lord for the low quality Soviet bombs; two-thirds of them seem to be duds.

In the far east my navy reports a target of opportunity; a Soviet Skory class destroyer is spotted going SW through the Tsushima Strait. I think I'll let my cruisers give it a couple of 6" 110-lb presents.

My troops in Germany report seeing a veteran IS-3 heavy tank NW of Dresden. The Red storm is rising...

Nice. I really like Italy, being part Italian. Keep it up, I like this story.

Great story ! Leaves me wanting more.

January 1951
Now is the time for action! My navy gives chase and catches the Skory unaware of the danger. Luigi di Savoia Duca degli Abruzzi opens fire outside the Skory's fire range and mess it up badly. Giuseppe Garibaldi joins in and delivers the coup de grâce; a big explosion is seen amidships, probably the torpedos blowing up, and the Soviet destroyer keels over and disappears rapidly into the deep. Those Red sailors who can’t swim better learn ree-hee-heally quick.

After that fast and easy battle my ships resume their course into the Yellow Sea. Passing the border between North and South Korea we see Communist troops inside South Korea; four regular PLA infantry divisions, one of them not full strength, and one really battered elite T-34. Obviously the South Koreans didn’t give away their land for free. My navy splits up in two separate forces and blockades the coast outside Peking. No fish for you, comrade!

Our infantry and APC’s in Germany are on 24-7 alert now.
5101wf.jpg

To the north they can see German infantry positioned on a hill. Soon they’re our brothers-in-arms once again... but this time a democratic people ready to fight and die for human rights. It’s hard to believe it’s only five years and eight months ago since that moustached megalomaniac died.

The South Koreans launches a desperate ill-planned counterattack to drive out the Red hordes. A whole infantry division is slaughtered by the Chinese and North Korean units, and a second attack by a M-24 Chaffee unit barely makes it back. The US Air Force tries to back them up by bombing Pyongyang with the B-29 and the three P-51 squadrons from Japan. Like too many times before the civilian population suffers the most from the bombing. Didn’t we learn from the horrors of Dresden..?

In Germany the evil B-29 lookalikes are back; three Tu-4 heavy bomber squadrons carpet bomb Fur Hill from the north, and like the last time our soldiers stay low and take minimal damages. But this time the raid is immediately repeated by another three Tu-4 squadrons coming in from south-east, and our boys are caught out in the open. The elite M-3 half-track APC unit bears the brunt of it, not being able to manoeuvre their cumbersome vehicles into cover in time. Now only half of their former strength, they can only wait for the Red tanks to follow...

Then something unexpected happens; Warsaw Pact declares war on the British! I am stunned. What has happened? My diplomats have no answers, as usual. I have no idea why I bother to pay them salaries. A possible answer put forward by the Navy is that it’s really a terrible mistake; we have seen several British submarines on their way home, and it’s quite possible that the Red Fleet actually attacked one of those by mistake. Sounds idiotic to me! In any case, the allies of Great Britain declares war on the Evil Empire. And I get another, nastier surprise: Yugoslavia declares war on the Soviets. WTH??? Are they on my side?! There goes my expansion-in-Europe plan down the drain...

The Soviet veteran IS-3 heavy tank unit we’ve expected to attack Fur Hill suddenly disappears going straight east. Hey, now that’s a problem of someone else than me. Obviously the Communists realized the futility of trying to vanquish our soldiers on Fur Hill!

Somewhere else along the border our German allies must have decided to strike first (again. Barbarossa 2?), because the minions of the Evil Empire queue up to declare war on West Germany: Cuba, Central Africa, Arab League... Aw come on! Isn’t North Africa allied to them either??? How am I supposed to restore our greatness without Libya?! Oh well, at least I can take... ahem... liberate Africa Orientale Italiana from the Central Africans. If I only had a transport ship. Drat.

Somewhere up in the frozen north a small but very brave people decides it’s payback time for the Winter War. Consequently the usual suspects queue up for the second time this month, now to declare war on the Scandinavians. That’s right, blame the Norwegians and the Swedes for what the Finns did! At least the Finns aren’t alone this time.

A third queue declares war on the United States. Hey, when we did that in December 1941 it proved to be a very, VERY bad idea...

And now chaos rules the earth; some Chinese did a no-no, so now the Stalinist commies are in war with the Maoist commies.

The Iberians are the next recipient of the Evil Minions’ war declarations. I told you Franco you little fascist fart; it was not a bright move to send those infantry divisions to China through the Soviet Union!

And now the commies declare war on yet another commie nation, the Yugoslavians. Hmm... if the Warsaw pact occupies Yugoslavia I would be in a good position to "liberate" my neighbour. On the other hand, my new neighbour would be the most powerful army in the world. Generals, where are those tanks I ordered two months ago??? Not ready until september?! Union rules against overtime, I see.

February 1951
My naval strike force in the Yellow Sea has been away for nine months now, so it’s time to recall them. I’ll need escorts and gunnery support if I’m to invade Africa or Arabia. And I need a transport too of course. And I need something to invade with. Ok, pen and paper: -Dear Santa...

One last blow against Mao: my cruisers bombard the cattle pastures and the wheat fields around Peking.
5102fe.jpg

Heehee, it must be hard to milk the cows and harvest the wheat when you keep falling into those craters all the time. Oh those small joys of life... time to go. My navy sets course out of the Yellow Sea.

When my naval force reaches the coast of Japan we get visual contact with a Soviet naval force! Two Sverdlov class cruisers and a Skory class destroyer escorting a transport is a very tempting target indeed, but my ships have to wait and replenish themselves first. They won’t get far though, my cruisers are faster than theirs and the transport will slow them down further.

The decimated M-3 unit on Fur Hill is recalled to Italy to recuperate in Milan, while the Milanese elite M-3 unit is sent to Fur Hill to beef up the defence there.

Back home in Italy my worker is finally done with the aluminium mine. One bloody year it took! Would serve them lazy bums right to make them build that fortress on Fur Hill under enemy fire, but I better develop my production capacity instead. Nah, my heart overrules my mind: I can’t abandon my boys on Fur Hill! Besides it will show our allies our commitment to the treaty. Have no fear, goldenhaired Rhinemaidens; the heirs of Rome are here to defend your Heimat against the Red Hordes. It’ll take six months to build a fortress, but we’ll hold it. Avanti!!!

The Canadians must have attacked the Evil Empire somewhere over the rainbow, because the Cubans, the Central Africans and the Arabs seems very upset with them.

A French M-4 Sherman tank unit thunders past Venice on their way to the front. Go get them, mes amis! How I love the French élan, especially when I’m not at the wrong end of the stick. The little commies declare war on France too.

I am politely reminded by signor Yoshida that my ships are in Japanese waters now, so I ask him for Right of Passage just to be friendly, for old times sake. He gladly excepts, we toast our great nations in saké and then I’m off.

Our naval force reports seeing a gigantic six-engined aircraft going past and bombing the Red ships. Despite the enormous bomb load dropped on the Soviets, only one Sverdlov is hit and not critically. Size doesn’t matter they say. Still, now our ships can follow the oil slicks... the shadows grow longer now, uncle Joe!

The Red National Guard units south of Berlin are attacked from northeast! One unit is annihilated and our soldiers on Fur Hill cheer the unknown attacker. Still no Soviet armoured onslaught in sight. What are they doing on the other side of that rusty curtain?

Good writing... This is the first story I've seen in a scenario instead of a random map game, and it's making it much more interesting. I especially liked the parts about the yellow reds (oranges - I have got to use that one) and how you made the job of a few Chinese herding peasants that much harder. :)

Great job! I too was planning on writing a story on a scenario but Wolfhart beat me to it.
