Update 21- Years 1447-1500: Hegemon
Many things in this world are undergoing great changes. War nearly tears the northern Oneists apart, Guangfei and New Veritas fight viciously for southern dominance, and the dogpiled Lengels begin their fall at last- or do they?
But firstly, let us speak of lighter events. Perhaps to build tension… or perhaps because I am a shameless procrastinator.
Ida’an’i’I has slowly expanded onto more islands in its archipelago. Early trade begins between them and the Aitheans to the west, but it quickly begins to fail.
For Aithea was in dire straits. A near complete lack of government action had rendered the nation almost totally inept, while barbarians flooded into the borders. Feileacan Liath was the first city to fall under attack. The defenders fought well, but the ever-increasing numbers of the barbarians eventually broke through. The city was torched.
Infuriated by the governments failure to put up significant defenses, the nation began to collapse. A General named Nean Targandh seized control of the nation and began to put up a defense, but it was too late to redeem the nation. He held off the barbarians, but was then faced by the force that had forced the barbarians into Aithea. The Tsayans.
The remenants of Aithea put up a bold defense at Iolar Geimhread, but were crushed, and their General and leader Targandh killed in battle. The remenants of the nation soon thereafter fell to the Tsaya.
(-1500 Tsayan Spearmen, +1 Tsayan Region, +40 Captured Galleys to Tsaya, +1 Confidence)
In the land of Kelios, peace and prosperity reign. The city of Aldisir has developed into a second ‘heart’ of Kelios, and the port cities are beginning to attract foreign trade.
The quasi-religious philosophy of Alse has become ubiquitous in Kelios, and is gaining popularity in Tsaya. It fits in well with their atheist traditions. The goal of Alse, bringing earth closer to perfection, is interpreted by the militaristic Tsayans as the uniting of the world under one enlightened but all-powerful ruler.
The Divotheist states continue quiet, nondescript expansion. All Divotheists recently celebrated the great ‘Coming of the Gods’ festival, held only once every 287 years.
Tir Tairngire has begun to form closer relations with Arcadia. Its welcoming of Pirian missionaries, while good for relations, was an unpopular move for the people of the country, who are firmly entrenched in their religion already. Despite this, there have still been some converts, and some adopting both religions. The contact has brought trading benefits.
(-1 Tuatha Confidence, Tir Tairngire begins adopting Pirian Oneism)
The increasingly paranoid nation of Adar has convinced its people that virtually everyone has been plotting against them. Coupled with the Citadel-led blockade, broken only once by a few merchants from Tellium, Adar has become totally isolated. Its growing population is expanding further and further westwards from the capital.
Following the Venix incident, war nearly broke out between Norvalin and Arcadia, stopped only by a last minute truce. However, the anticlimax and sudden halting of the military machines of the two nations was jarring for both nations. People were unsure of whether they should be relieved, celebratory, or angry about what happened.
Arcadia has obtained iron, which quickly spread via close trade routes to Nontin and Tir Tairngire. It has also begun missionary activities in Norvalin, which has made some advances in the border region. The coexistence of Orthodox and Pirian Oneisn together on the border of these two northern nations is unstable, but may lead either to great good or tragedy. Perhaps they will learn tolerance, or maybe they will fall into religious violence. However, conversion efforts in Chancotol have been totally unsuccessful. The Chanc King Xancraz II has politely requested that foreign mercenaries do not send missionaries into his country.
Norvalin has also received Iron Age technology, though separately from its southern neighbours.
(Norvalin, Arcadia, Nontin, Tir Tairngire enter Iron Age, some Norvalins convert to Pirian Oneism)
On a visit to Ardan, it was discovered that Archbishop Jaen intended to remove the sarcophagus of St. Pire, to move it to Vael Dash. The fact got out too late, however, as the ship had already left. The local Davarians, many of whom still followed Pirian Oneism, were infuriated. So were Tengri practitioners, who also regarded St. Pire’s remains as holy.
However, there was nothing to be done about it. The sarcophagus was brought to the marble tomb in Arcadia, and laid into its new residence. Many Pirians, including Arcadians, are offended by this move. The Lengels had previously allowed pilgrims to Ardan, and disturbing St. Pire’s rest was considered sacreligious.
The final blow was dealt when Arcadia formally separated from the Orthodox Oneist Church. The Davarians didn’t follow suit, still feeling betrayed by the Arcadians, and Pirian Oneism was split.

Nontin’s growing population has been expanding their borders southwards.
Orum quietly expands, in a peaceful manner.
Gamorrea has continued its rapid modernization. The subjugated Malkavians are being forced to either assimilate or be enslaved, and the growing population is working more and more land. Gooranism is being actively encouraged in neighbouring countries., and has gained small followings in Orum and Ikki. Gamorrea is rising!
(+1 Gamorrean Region, Gooranist Minorities form in Orum and Ikki)
The Citadel has been relatively inactive as of late, other than their conflict with Adar. A small force has been dispatched to Northport to defend it against Adari aggression, should defense become absolutely necessary.
The Ikki, coming to believe that the volcano had been caused by their abandoning of the traditional ways, have used this as a reason to instate a system of persecution against New Eldists, forcing them to either join a militia or pay a massive fine. Another reason for this is to protect the nation against True Lengel aggression.
Regardless of the reason, New Eldists are either being forced into poverty, forced to renounce pacifism (at least to some degree) or to flee to the Citadel of Knowledge in the south.
(-5000 New Eldist population in Ikki)
The expanded army of Ikki, which now de facto rules the country, has set up advanced defense posts in True Lengel lands. No attack has yet come against them.
The Merhai tribes have allied themselves with the True Lengels. First uniting the disparate tribes to their south, they joined up with True Lengel forces to begin a southward offensive.
(+2000 Merhai Spearmen)
The True Lengels and Iron Face Empire, as the forces following the Lengelzai now refer to themselves as, faced off in several skirmishes while larger forces moved into place. Merhai raiders struck at Lengeliz as a diversion, but got far more than they expected. A huge Iron Face force finally arrived from the south, led by Akhidai the Destroyer himself. The Merhai desperately retreated, perhaps not expecting such a concentrated strike. Or perhaps to spring a trap.
At the upper Wardash river, the Iron Face army collided head on with the huge force of the True Lengels. Huge casualties were suffered by the light cavalry of the True Lengels, but they disengaged before the battle became a rout. Then, a force of Merhai Ramids suddenly appeared from behind the True Lengel lines. Before Akhidai could react, they plowed into the Iron Faces, dealing even worse casualties to them. As the Iron Faces regrouped and began to push off the True Lengel forces striking at their left flank, things once again looked up for the Iron Face Empire. Then, a deathblow was dealt to them. A second Merhai force came over a hill from the east and struck far into the Iron Face lines. Suddenly, the battle looked very bad for the Lengelzai’s forces. Akhidai commanded a retreat, and the bloody remenants of the Lengel army disengaged. The pursuers, conscious of the possibility of false retreats, followed with caution. From that point on, the Lengels were forced into a fighting retreat. All important things in the capital city of Lengeliz were removed, and when the city fell into True Lengel hands it was razed.

In the UKKK, the religions of Oundainty and Andues are coming closer together, forming a dualistic hybrid religion.
The nation of Skilv’so, now a vassal of the UKKK, has been granted Bronze technology.
(Skilv’so enters Bronze Age)
King Dysonis, successor to the late Ptolemy dynasty, sent a large force to finish off Anarafar. The city’s defenses proved to be surprisingly weak, and it fell with low casualties. Riding on this success, the UKKK and Skilv’so force traveled south and expanded the southern border of Khemri-controlled Nurmafer down to Guangfei.
(-1000 Khemri Spearmen, -500 Khemri Swordsmen)
The Swades managed to convince some former Nurmaferi groups to join them, though this was still quite minor. Most Nurmaferis would sooner be dead then Swade.
Skilv’so has established the city of Windkeep as its new capital, and its settling into its new lands nicely. The Skilv’so and Nurmaferi races are slowly beginning to merge into one, though Nurmaferis are still often second-class citizens.
Khemri (as I will refer to the UKKK as from now on, for simplicity’s sake) had never been happy with its agreements with the Lengels. They always quietly sought a way to squirm out. And this opportunity came with the Lengel civil war. A chance at last to get rid of the Iron Face’s allies and break the invaders once and for all.
In the occupied regions of Swade, Myocaca and Emor, Khemri made its first moves of betrayal. As the Iron Faces fought a retreat out of the diseased jungles, the Khemri force complementing it suddenly turned on them. At the same time, co conspirators in Swade and Myocaca attacked. In the chaotic battle of Ansamsana, surprise, traps, deadly new Bladeist Longbows and superior numbers resulted in the southern Iron Face army being utterly destroyed, along with the Tellium force fighting side by side with it.

With Emor now liberated from Lengel control, Emorans are beginning to make movements towards renewed independence. Will Khemri allow this, or squash these initiatives?
At sea, Khemri’s navy attacked all of the fleets of the Lengels and their allies. Many were taken by surprise, and the survivors were wiped out soon after.
(-Navies of Verta, Tellium, Lengel, Kalmar, -30 Khemri Galleys, -15 Tridents, -15 Bimarines)
In the north, the army of Khemri poured into Tellium without warning. The shocked defenders fought desperately, but they were hopelessly outnumbered and crushed. However, the government escaped and guerilla forces harassed Khemri’s supply lines. The Khemri army then advanced into Verta, and using its new naval dominance conquered the nation easily.
Seeing what had become of their southern bretheren, Kalmar pledged allegiance to Khemri, for the cause of the destruction of the Lengels. Kerania, enraged, attacked the ‘turncoat’ Kalmars. But with the help of Khemri, Kerania was overrun and occupied in a quick campaign.

From northern Croyodon, the religion of Nordism is beginning to spread. From the northern rural regions of Croyodon, what had been the ancestral culture of the nation is being recovered.
(+Croyodonian Culture)
The Gerbers had, during the reign of the Fifth Toghol-King, been rapidly recovering and modernizing. Things were finally looking up for the long-abused Gerbers.
Until, while Khemri betrayed the Iron Face Alliance, Gorin attacked. A huge force of Gorinese, Shalamari avengers and Croyodonians flooded into former Shalamari. The overwhelmed Gerber forces were forced to resort to guerilla tactics. They had received no warning, for their informants in Gorin had been previously apprehended by Gorinese counterintelligence services.
Gorin quickly conquered the Gerbers, though they had yet to face the Gerber army in a pitched battle. The Gerber General Baygar couldn’t afford that, he had to rely on hit and run attacks to slowly weaken the occupiers. No occupation could last forever, not between to nations as different as Gorin and Gerber.
Or so he thought…
Meanwhile, the northern army of the Gorinese Empire crossed the border into Iron Face territory. The failing remnants of the once mighty steppe nation were still reeling from continuing defeats in the north, and totally unaware of Timur the Lame’s defeat in the south.
The attack by Gorin would be the killing blow of the former Lengel (now Iron Face) Empire. The Lengelzai rallied what remaining combat-ready young men he could, and led them against the Gorinese army. They met at Zawasae. In one of the last great battles of the Lengel/Iron Face Empire, Akhidai the Destroyer fought off the Gorinese advance. But the victory was costly for his remaining troops. Recruits began to desert. Taking advantage of the Gorinese defeat, the last Lengelzai fought back into Gorinese territory, all the way to the Wardash. There, Gorin’s army regrouped and pushed back Akhidai’s forces.
In other areas, things were, if not as bad, worse. True Lengels and their Merhai allies advanced constantly southwards. With some suspected foreign encouragement, Davar began to rebel. Firstly, to rule themselves once again; secondly, to avoid going down with a sinking ship.
At Alaki, Akhidai knew his time had come to an end. The once mighty Lengel Empire was reduced to a few parts of former Nkondi. So he ceased his fighting retreat and fought his last battle. He was horribly outnumbered, but in ideal terrain. He dealt high casualties to his enemies, but fell nonetheless. The era of the Lengelzai was over.
The True Lengel forces declared themselves to be the successors to the Lengels. They chose to return to the old ways of the Lengel, that of warriors and hunters, not mindlessly destructive and imperialistic conquerors. They consolidated their lands, and other than a few border disagreements with Gorin have returned to the pre-empire state of the Lengels, or at least as close as is now possible.
(-Iron Face Empire, -500 Merhai Spearmen, -4000 Gorinese Spearmen, -2000 Archers, -3 Ramids)
After putting down much of the Gerber civilian resistance, the Gorinese Force (specifically, the Shalamari volunteers) began killing Gerber civilians. Not a sporadic killing like those that the Lengels had been famous for, nor a passionately vengeful lashing out by Shalamari. It was an organized extermination. When the Gerbers realized what was happening, they began to try to flee. But the Gorinese stopped them, and only a few escaped into Khemri, Davar or Iron Face-held Davar.
The Gerber military fought desperately against the invaders, but eventually realized, during the height of the genocide, that defeat was inevitable. Their only hope was to deal as many casualties as they possibly could to the Gorinese. That they did, to the best of their abilities.
Within a few years, the Gerber race was all but extinguished. No treasures remained, nor any people. All the cities had been totally razed, all traces of Gerber culture annihilated. The only loose ends were the unaccounted for Sixth Toghol-King and a miniscule military remenant, who presumably fled into the Kerans.
(-Gerber, -2000 Gorinese Mooseys, -2000 Spearmen, -10 Bajo-Oni, 1 Bonus Eco Point for Gorin next turn)
The days following the fall of Akhidai and the Iron Faces were hectic. Shalamari settlers slowly began returning to their old lands, and damaged nations began to rebuild. But border disputes continue. Khemri still maintains military control over significant portions of western Bladeist lands. And when word of Gorinese actions in Gerber got out, they were internationally criticized and vilified by countless organizations.
The recent years have seen a huge overturn of the old order. The United Kingdom of Khemri and Kehexou has clearly established itself as an unprecedented near-hegemon power. But will it be led skillfully into the future, or will it collapse under the tremendous burden of its own size and conquests?
Gorin too has become an even greater power. But while its newly taken lands should be easy to control, they may be too overstretching to be feasibly maintained. Time will tell.
Aryie has prospered and expanded further inland to accommodate its growing population. It is blissfully unaffected by the two great wars to its north and south.
Exilsium has hosted a great conference of Oneists at Pax. Great hopes for Oneist reconciliation existed at the beginning of the conference, but it soon became clear that the attendees were being more political than religious in their debate. Little real progress was made, few were willing to compromise, and the conference itself was tainted by the assassinations of several New Veritasian and Norvalin representatives by unidentified attackers. However, some reconciliation was made between Pirian and Orthodox Oneism, with the retranslation of the Hypandium scripts into Valin and their incorporation into the Summa, an update of the Oneist holy book. Also Guangfei Oneists managed to stay on relatively good terms with the New Veritasians (IE: Not killing them), which alone would be a good reason to call the conference a success.
The Valfei war, as the New Veritas/Guangfei conflict is being referred to, continues to escalate.
As New Veritas began to moblilize many of its industries, the city of Saenium began to develop into an important center of the war effort. Many metals were mined around it, and much forging took place within it.
(+Saenium Economic Center)
Taking a cue from the Bladeists (although some historians and Valins claim that they came up with the idea separately, and earlier) New Veritasian Phoenix Archers have begun using deadly new ‘Serpentine Bows’ (OTL Composite Bows). They are more powerful and accurate weapons than Guangfei’s crossbows, but far more difficult to master. Fortunately for New Veritas, its divisions of Phoenix Archers are among the most skillful soldiers in the world.
New Veritas gained an edge in the barbarian proxy war with the foundation of Alatia, a united nation formed out of the northern tribes. They were quick to adopt Oneism from their parent nation, and even quicker to accept iron weapons.
(Alatia is Oneist, Alatia enters Iron Age)
Alatia was quick to act, striking southwards into its pro-Guangfei brethren. The defenders were woefully ineffective in their defense, partly due to the recent death of one of their more important chiefs. Alatia quickly consolidated its gains and prepared for a fight with Guangfei.
They wouldn’t have to wait long.
A Guangfei force arrived soon after the defeat of their barbarian supporters. Nonetheless, they managed to push into Alatia’s lines, and gained some support from the southerners, particularly one skilled young warrior named Cheng Ji. He quickly rose to become a leader of the subjugated south of Alatia, fighting alongside the Guangfei forces.
The skilled soldier’s leadership allowed Guangfei to keep a foothold in Alatia, and even expand it northwards. But his tactics were not enough to defeat Alatian numbers and its support amongst many civilians.

In the south, a peace treaty was made with the misnamed Kingdom of Shangei, which was neither a Kingdom nor centered around (or even containing) the city of Shangei.
Why was it not a Kingdom? Officially, it was, but in truth, it became clear that New Veritas had an inordinate deal of control over it, to the point of providing the monarch’s own bodyguard, which was rumoured to have the secondary purpose of keeping Shangei in line.
Regardless of these details, the Valins soon began basing their southern campaigns out of Shangei. Some sabotage took place, and other minor problems, but not enough to change any New Veritasian plans.
(-5 Fire Galleys)
A strike downriver towards Shysang and Shangei was launched with the entirety of New Veritas’ river fleet. The Campaign of Fire, as it was called, is essentially summed up in its name. The Fire Galleys were loaded to the brims with Phoenix Archers, and wreaked havoc in southern Guangfei.
The Guangfei navy had been expecting the attack, and were well prepared for it. When news reached them of New Veritas’ arrival, the Guangfei confronted them and unleashed their secret naval weapon. The He Chuans, as they are called, are miniscule ships, not much more than military rowboats.
At the start of the naval Battle of Shysang, the New Veritasians struck first with several Shangei ships. These sailors, very annoyed about being used as meat shields, had become sick of New Veritas’ control over their nation. They had been planning a mutiny, and believing that it would be better to be a Guangfei than a Valin puppet, defected just before reaching the Guangfei forces. The Guangfei sailors, confused by this turn in events, and did nothing until it became clear that the Shangei sailors were all dying at the hands of the infuriated New Veritasians and that there was no trickery going on.
So after this hiccupping start, the battle proper began. Guangfei ships advanced and collided with the Valin fleet. Their numerical advantage, while huge, was evened by the fighting proficiency and armaments of the New Veritasians.
What both sides had hoped would be a battle fought at some distance became a brutal melee. New Veritas’ ships caught on fire from contact with burning Guangfei vessels.
New Veritas, beginning to lose the battle, tried to retreat, but the attempt was catastrophic. The remenants of their fleet were mostly caught in the wreakage, and were destroyed. Only two ships survived to escape upstream.
The Guangfei fleet, while victorious, also suffered grievous losses. Nearly all of the He Chuans were destroyed, and many

While defeated on water, New Veritas had more success on land. A force of 2000 Cataphractoi, heavy cavalry based on the Keranian model, struck out northwards from Shangei in an attempt to cut off the besieging forces at Qingdao. This was a good plan, but foiled by better plans. Guangfei had suspected a flanking attack, and had thus dug in deeply in the passes of the White/Dadong Range. On top of that, the element of surprise that the New Veritasians had hoped for in their cavalry, who they assumed the Guangfei had never seen or fought before, wasn’t to be the case. For Guangfei had already managed to acquire horses…
The Cataphractoi force was fought to a halt in the high mountain passes, unable to remove entrenched Guangfei forces.
(-500 New Veritasian Cataphractoi)
Here in Qingdao, the greatest battles of this war so far were fought. The newly-appointed Stratikrator Gregorian led a force of 3000 Scimitari towards Qingdao to relieve the pressure from the defenders. But his forces ran into something most unexpected. Powerful Guangfei Cavalry. Gregorian’s forces were sadly lacking in anti-cavalry units. Adding to the problem was the new armour of the Guangfei, which was designed specifically to protect against the slashing strikes of scimitars.
Gregorian’s force was held away from Qingdao, and soon pressed back by combined Guangfei arms. Only the recruiting of more Urban militia prevented a rout. Safe from outside distractions, the besiegers of Qingdao managed to undermine the walls, breaking the defense and sending Guangfei troops pouring back into the city. A few hundred heroic New Veritasians gave their lives to delay the Guangfei troops, so that New Veritas’ forces could evacuate by sea, along with any Qingdao citizens who wished (though there weren’t many).
(-2000 New Veritasian Scimitari, -1000 New Veritasian Urban Militia, -500 Guangfei Ma Bing, -1000 Guangfei Swordsmen)
Things got worse. In Sintonia, a revolt broke out. With virtually no defenses in its lands, the rebellion spread like wildfire through Bladeist regions of New Veritas. Troops were scrounged from every available nearby area, and a force of little over 1000 was set up to quarantine the rebel held areas. But it wasn’t enough. Many of these troops moved into Paleras as it came under siege, tying up most of the little available force. The Sintonians besieged it, then sent on a large rabble towards the greatest prize in New Veritas: Redemption.
Civilian volunteers began to improve the situation, and the Sintonians were stopped before the city, and began to be pushed back. Meanwhile, a starving Paleras surrendered, and fell out of New Veritas’ hands.
(-1000 New Veritasian Urban Militia, -1000 Sintonian Spearmen, 1 Region from New Veritas to Sintonia)
The tides of war were now waxing for Guangfei. Its troops began to push New Veritas back out of occupied Qingdao. The Valins, now faced with a two front war, were forced to retreat back to their prewar borders, where they set up a strong and lasting defensive line.
Even at sea, New Veritas’ traditionally dominant navy is falling prey to raiders.
(-5 New Veritasian Triremes)
Peace of some sort must be made soon. For the citizens of New Veritas have grown fed up with a war that many didn’t feel was entirely justified in the first place. Although they are often fine with unjustified wars that go successfully.
(-Veritasian Confidence)
Things look dark for New Veritas. A powerful rebellion has torn away half of the nation, and Guangfei has advanced to its very doorstep. However, their fronts have also become significantly smaller, so defense is now much more simple. The fall of Qingdao has freed up troops who can now fight the Sintonian rebellion.
Though things suddenly don’t look so great for Guangfei either…
For Trinlin stabbed into its soft southern underbelly.
Prior to the war, the Emperor of Guangfei had been celebrating his successes with, among others, several Trinlin diplomats. Following their departure, the Emperor fell ill with a strange sickness. The discovery of toxic sediments in the emperor’s drink pointed to foul play. But by this point, Trinlin’s forces had already crossed the border.
Attempts to raise support for Shangei independencewere rather ineffective, though they did wield some minor results, such as distracting Guangfei troops who could have been doing more productive things.
Trinlin’s army first smashed into the city of Shangei. It attacked with no warning, so Guangfei’s fleet was unable to stop the river crossing to the city. It was stormed and taken with minimal casualties. Next, Trinlin advanced towards the holy city of Jianking. Desperate troop juggling and recruiting, Guangfei managed to get an army to confront Trinlin’s. The two met at Jianking, but the desperate (to defend the city) and disorganized Guangfei troops were not a match for the superior Trinlin force. Jianking too fell, and all of its statues and things of cultural importance were destroyed.
(-1000 Trinlin Spearmen, -1000 Trinlin Swordsmen, -500 Guangfei Crossbowmen, -All recent Guangfei Conscripts, -Jianking Religious Center)
With this victory, pro-Shangei revolts broke out over the south, and the Guangfei soldiers who survived the Campaign of Fire were incapable to stamp all of them out. Much of former Shangei has fallen out of Guangfei’s hands, although the lands further south remain loyally Guangfei, and have formed a militia to ensure this safety.
The forces of Trinlin marched on, towards Chanjiang. But the bridge just past Jianking collapsed after a few hundred soldiers had started across. Guangfei had sabotaged its bridge perfectly. Rafts were built and Trinlin attempted a crossing. But the arrival of Guangfei’s river fleet and a new recruit army convinced the Trinlinese commander to focus his efforts elsewhere. Though he had been requested to conquer the western side of the river, he was trapped on the east, with supplies dwindling. So he consolidated his gains and sent a force to conquer Shysang.
(-500 Trinlin Axemen)
Guangfei faces an interesting situation now. One enemy is on the brink of death, while another is powerful and invading. Will it make peace with New Veritas and focus its efforts on Trinlin, or will it destoy both, and become indisputable ruler of the south?
