following the previous SG, GAM1 - Large 100k pangea on MONARCH
we decided to up the stakes.

this time around we are trying for another 100K win, BUT....
it will be Archipelago.
while we are at Always War
and NOT playing any civ that is: A-Scientific or B- Religious

so i think we can sum this up as:

AI: Max number. normal aggression (so they will actually build something instead of warring between them)
Barbs: NOT raging. see above for reasoning. maybe sedentary?

My Thoughts:
Difficulty-Either Monarch or Emporer. Perhaps the rest of the team has some opinions. Moving to a Arch' and AW will make this much harder then the previous game.
World-Large
Climate/Terrain-Random
AI-Agreed
Barbs-Sedentary is probably a good idea

We will need to rush to Writing/MM ASAP to build Galleys. No researching of either Monarch or Republic and switch to Feud ASAP.

I'm thinking the following for our tribe:
England-Seafaring would be nice for the extra movement, and they start with Alpha. Man-O-War is a blah UU.
Carthage-Seafaring/Industrious and starts with Alpha. UU can spark an early GA, probably my 1st choice
Rome-Starts with Alpha and is Comm and Militaristic. Cheaper units, and Legionaires.

Anyone else, chime right in here.

i was thinking of starting SG with the same criteria, except continents.

any chance you consider continents instead of islands?
 
lurker's comment: Wow, Always War and 100k? Whew. Doesn't Feudalism (which I've read is good for 100k) have War Weariness?

Dutch for Agri --> more pop rushing?

i'd also like to play the vikings..... but any chance we can go from archipelago to continents? (i hate island hopping)
 
Feudalism has same WW as Republic- it might be a problem in AW. It was a minor annoyance to me on a game as the Celts on the Huge Earth Map on Chieftain, where I fought many wars, but I didn't use a variant. In my Sig, there is a link to a game called "My (actually Pequinino's, I'm just copying the title) first SG (for Newbies)", on Regent, where we fought for Domination in the later stages of the game, and we were using Republic, and WW became a problem rather than just an annoyance. So, judging from these games, I would say that AW using any government with WW on Emperor or above would create a Collossal WW problem.
Just my 2 cents.
 
lurker's comment: I'll lurk.

My thoughts: AW will make it tougher and arch will make harbors important if you pop rush, so you can get luxes. Arch will probably make the AW piece of it easier, since it's much easier to avoid contacts. Arch map means that if you pop rush, the pyramids are less useful, too.

This will be interesting...

The variant of 100K sort of implies you don't win by conquest, so either you remove the conquest VC, or you need to modify your AW to allow for a relatively peaceful ending where you don't wipe out the last civ.

Also, since war weariness goes up every turn you stay in unfriendly lands, the Vikings, with the berserkers ability to take cities in one turn from the sea, are well suited to reducing weariness.

pelgo or continents? mid size water on both?

agreed on feud being VERY problematic.

we should probably stick to monarchy :king:

'pelgo does indeed make this easier, so we can, if decided go for continents.

I say we stick with an Archie, that was the plan from the previous SG.

if we're always at war, are we going to wipe out the other civs? don't we have to leave at least one in the game so we can get our 100k culture points? do we have to be merciful?
