We will be willing to entertain talks when the abducted Fudirunins are returned.

"Sir, we have a situation here."

Katihit turn towards the comm officer. He'd taken over over command of the ship after the now deceased Cagnich retired. This ship was his home and he had no intention of letting anything happen to it.

"Have we been spotted?"

"No Sir, but I have just intercepted a Fehan message. There appears to be a exploratory ship near the homeworld. This may mean the detection of our species."

"Homeworld defense won't let the ship get anywhere near the planet but the ship might send some message before they are dealt with. Or they might not. Either way Command might see this as a sign of aggression and from what we've seen if the Fehan find our planet they might attempt to colonize us like the Sadhilim. We're going to be needed. Helmsmen set course for home this mission is over."

"Yes Sir"

The comm officer look bewildered, "But Sir we have fully researched the Sadhilim."

"We've done enough, they are a violent oppressed species. If an offensive is needed it will be a good starting point, that and our other info is all Command will need. Inform the crew of our new heading."

"Yes Sir."

Meanwhile across the Void

"This is Defense Base A-12 calling Defense Squad C-56, respond."

"Read you loud and clear Base."

"Are you tracking the intruders?"

"Yes Sir, all weapons have been locked on, no sign that they've detected us yet. waiting to fire on your mark."

"I've just received orders from Command, they want the ship intact. Fire the Pulses."

"Acknowledged, firing now. Waiting for conformation. The ship is no longer showing electric activity. Looks like we did this cleanly."

Acknowledged, send the scavenge ship in to collect the intruders. Bring them back here and dock in the decon wing, lets see what we can learn from this ship."

*contact made with the elder one*
Shamai! Why do I hear you have not conquered this empire yet? I contact you now to give you your next goal and I see you have no dealt with this so called Zaff yet?

My Elder one. The Zaff are strange creatures. As I told you in the past the are able to take over the minds of others. Their numbers grow constantly and their subordinates would lose their lives in suicidal attacks against our ships. I also saw fit to study them and their...

Study them? Did I not order you to kill them all to the last one? How can a whole space faring empire with all its resources aimed at conquering more space cannot deal with a pathetic less advanced race?

Elder one. Eradicating life on left and right without studying it is a waste of so much knowledge...

Knowledge that we do not need.

If I will know of their abilities perhaps I can find a way to make their armies stop fighting for them. They take over the thoughts of others, perhaps this can be canceled.

Useless information. I order you to finish this war soon. Use all of your resources. Crack their planets into dust if you need to. You have the power to do so. We do not need planets anyway, just the resources inside them which is easier to collect from dust in any rate.

But my Elder, so much knowledge would be lost.

Enough with this need for knowledge. I will allow you to build that Zoo you wanted. Kidnap creatures and put them in it. But finish the war. In the next contact time I expect you to have finished occupying this area I commanded you to occupy.

I have received my order Elder. I thank you for allowing me to build the sentient Zoo. I will do as commanded.
*contact with elder one off*

This war had gone for too long. The Zaff and their subordinates will be destroyed under the gods of Zan. I will send my most powerful of machines, we will no longer fight for land. We will destroy the planets themselves.
The Zoo will be remade into a research facility on other sentient beings. I must capture a Zaff alive and find a way to stop their ability with my computers and machines.

Nuxue B

Huxap Freyren tapped the controls of his craft gently, skimming it close to the wave-crested surface of the watery world of Nuxue B. With the pull of a lever, the vehicle transitioned, touched, the water, and came to a slow stop. Huxap pulled out a new control system from the first. A series of probes disengaged from the vessel's hull, small motors rapidly dispersing them around the area.

The vessel's communicator hummed to life.

"Orbital command to scouting vessel designation Kulin.

"Captain Huxap Freyren confirms a successful landing." The young Allentryen flared his feathers in a distinguished gesture, though the action was entirely missed over the audio connection. "I'm detecting the same varieties of life that have been reported by the other scouts. The planet seems to be very uniform in its environment."

"Indeed. Scouts from the polar regions indicate similar classes of organism present even in the coldest parts of this planet, but given the high atmospheric density and very rapid air and water circulation, that is to be expected. We can generally assume that all of this planet's surface features the same general biota."

Huxap nodded. The whole planet lacked any solid land- the shallowest point yet discovered on the planet was over a kilometer below sea level, and he was presently situated above a trench of well over twenty kilometers.

As if on cue, the voice resumed.

"Has your deep-descent probe turned up anything yet?"

"Nothing new as of... pardon me, we are picking up something... anomalous."

"Biotic?"

"No, just a lot of interference, or something."

It wasn't interference.

"Well, something's interrupting my connection with the probe. And it's picking up some sort of radiant heat source. Like an underwater volcano or something... but..."

Huxap was flustered. He had no idea what the cause of these strange readings could be. A tingling instinct at the roots of his mind stretched its way out to his mouth.

"It's artificial. There is something unnatural down there, and it's giving off lots of energy and interfering with my pr-"

The probe's readings went dark. Was something faulty? Huxap pulsed it several times, receiving comforting confirmations of its continued existence. But something was blocking its sensors. In a moment, the readings went completely dark.

"Orbital Command, are you reading this?"

No response. Had the operator moved on to another scout?

"Orbital Command, this is Captain Huxap Freyren of the scouting vessel Kulin, I've lost my depth probe, requesting a recovery pulse."

"Command?"

...

"Anyone?"

You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes

On the screen came an image. A Kau'Lauki speaking in a charismatic and happy tone to his Lauki drone bothers in the armory bay of one of the hundred or so assault ships that had been tracking the Gardener. Presumably now approaching the menaces home world, the tools of One. The planet was striped down the equator in a lush green and near the poles with barren deserts. Such an easter egg effect. Beauty.

“Salutations. Fellow brothers we have arrived. Our objective is the simplest of duties. Fight and die for mother. She provides and now we must do so.”

The Kau continued his speech. The Maus captain, just like his fellows in other ships, released his perfume to his little soldiers. Inspiring them with euphoric rage at the enemy. All Choon must die for the preservation of Ma'Autra. So it was to be done.

In the bays of each ship were hundreds of thousands of Lauki, of all types, and many eggs waiting to replace them upon death. With their tiny energy projectile weaponry they would fight this war, like those of their ancestors. Decades were like eons for them. Long passed battles seemed like myths, but theirs would one day appear the same to their offspring. In separate rooms rested the Rax, warriors to the fullest they required their rest and what could be seen as meditation. Yet deeper still in the ship were cages with the Exi'Lauki, the savage beasts that had been proven so efficient on Uex. They had been tamed to be used as mounts for the Rax, a very deadly combination against any foe.

The Jun on the bridge tracked the Gardener as he lowered himself into the atmosphere of this world. They had finally found the Choon world. It would be their end, at last. This evil had shown itself and has been bested by nature. One would lose her minions on this day.

The armada orbited the planet. Preparing the awesome show of force that had been brought along. Hundreds of millions of Lauki were in the ships. Ready to be lowered to the surface of this planet. Another field of death lay before the might of Ma'Autra. No remorse. Fight until victory is achieved. Fight for mother.

In amazing unity the ships all launched thousands of pods down to the planet. Like shooting stars they rained down into the world of the Dancer and the Gardener. Inside they were filled with the most ruthless generation of warriors yet contrived by mother. Mother had come to La, but was La ready for mother?

Update 5

In a long, protracted process, the Choon on Uex are being hunted towards extinction. The ferocious new Exi’Lauki have proven to be highly effective at taking down the immature Choon still infesting the world, and for the first time in centuries Ma’Autra once again begins to feel secure on this planet.

This reprieve has opened up the opportunity for vengeance. In pursuit of the fleeing Choon known as the Gardener, the Lauki-Maus have assembled a fleet to shadow it all the way to its homeworld, in order to wipe out these agents of One. While their destination is not actually the Choon homeworld, and said Choon aren’t even vaguely aware of the entity ‘One’, the huge fleet is still just beginning to arrive on the idyllic world of La.

However, they are not the first to discover the Choon on this planet. The Collectivity of Sanath has been aware of ‘Obligate Cerebrotroph A’ on Devkan-T for many cycles now, but has only recently managed to make contact, by means of an engineered creature serving as an organic hard drive, in order to transmit a huge amount of information directly to the Dancer’s mind. This first contact received a quick radio response from the Choon, who expressed her interest in further communications, a hesitant understanding of the fact that her new acquaintances do not appreciate being eaten, and a more significant degree of confusion about the purpose of an association of multiple beings. The Collectivity has been invited to visit La, as the Dancer seems to be nearly as curious about them as they are about her.

Elsewhere, a Choon has arrived to the Planet Zarr, only to be distracted by the presence of a Wera in the region. Fascinated by the colossal vacuum-dwelling creature, the Choon has spent several years exploring the colossal beast’s surface and has begun to colonize its thin atmosphere with a small, hardy population of drones.

The Skriv couldn’t care less.

Relations remain warm between the Collectivity of Sanath and Ulla, although the visitors seem to be growing weary on what they perceive as Ullau foot-dragging. The Qii have put forward a motion requesting a plebiscite for the Ullau to determine whether or not they will join their organization- said request has been accompanied with a large amount of pro-Collectivity propaganda. Meanwhile, the Zaff continue to advance almost uncontested into Ullau space, pushing popular opinion more and more towards joining.

The United Republics of Hedge look on in awe as the Dreamer descends into Garv’n. The massive beast seems to be simply resting in an isolated valley near the planetary equator, while the Verthomme government debates what is to be done, and exactly why the alien wants a single individual with which to communicate. However, as this debate dragged on, a Talarthyn Cherwal made the trek into the uplands, and offered herself to the Choon. It is unclear what exactly she told the alien about the plight of her displaced people, but shortly after their conversation, the Dreamer set out on the move. As we speak, he hovers ominously near the Verthomme settlement on Garv’n.

Hedge’s deliberations are, understandably, somewhat more tense than before.

Some brief diplomacy has been exchanged between Nidkubra and the Zaff Dominion, without coming to any clear conclusion. Independent herdmasters continue to prey at outlying scientific stations, but the Fudirunins are increasingly concentrating their populations into their home planets, where their gestalt bravado seems to have an effect running counter to the psychic domination of the Zaff. With their defensive military fleets now constantly growing, Nidkubra is beginning to feel prepared for the eventuality of an alien invasion. A few of the slaver fleets have been ambushed and destroyed by the Fudirunins, who have in a few cases even managed to rescue a few captured specimens of both their own species and several previously undiscovered aliens.

Zan Shamai, chastised for his continued failure to annihilated the Zaff, has ceased trying to take the worlds intact. Regrouping for yet another attack, Shamai directed just a small portion of his fleets into direct combat against the Zaff, sending most of his forces in a vast flanking maneuver, each fleet armed with some of the favoured biosphere-devastators of the Zan. The Zaff continue to shore up their defences, procuring more slaves and weaponry by the day, but little will prepare them for the tempest that is approaching.

The Allentryen Scouts investigating the Planet of Nuxue B have discovered an anomaly of sorts. Something on the planet has been causing frequent communications and electronic failures amongst the exploratory forces, causing a great deal of uneasiness in all involved.

In what is expected by the Tapani Republic to be better news, an alien vessel has been discovered on approach to Tapani itself. Friendly greetings have been sent, but no response has yet been received.

The Tal’Edra clan continues its exploration and expansion without significant event, though domestic issues with the Osudra continue to plague the powers that be on Jen’Tsa.

Many preparations are made by the Hubridians on Zephyr, for their first grand leap into space.

The ever-cautious Karronics have disabled the Fehan scouting vessel approaching Catifah, disguising the event as a natural electromagnetic discharge from the unusually-dense nebula. Much research has been done on the captured vessel and crew, and the First Karronic Expeditionary Group has been recalled to the homeworld. Great preparations are now in work- ensuring the perpetual security of Catifah is not an easy job.

The species along the up-arm outer fringe continue on as always, enjoying pleasant periods of peace and technological development, with the exceptions of the Sgligatiki, who are enjoying a pleasant period of religious turmoil, and the Fplinmy, who really couldn’t be bothered to do anything involving themselves with the flickering existences of the fragile civilizations surrounding them.

The Invasion of La

The Rax’Lauki wore a warrior’s grin as he charged out of the landing vessel on the back of his Exi’Lauki mount. The air on this world was pleasant- dense, but invigorating. Visibility was not good from his situation, but the thick forests would provide cover for his force while it assembled. A flat-topped, beetle-like creature skittered away into the undergrowth as he moved further into the unknown. In the distance, the sound of further landing transports filled him with confidence. The long defense against One was over- now, Ma’Autra would go on the offensive- and he was the speartip of the mother.

Still on a rush of excitement, he stabbed his prod at a passing creature. It squealed and thrashed for a moment, then stiffened in death. It looked like some sort of headless, globular bat, black and smooth in appearance. The voice of a Kau’Lauki ran through his head.

“Probably a collaborator.”

Indeed.

*****

Elsewhere, another landing site was caught in a firefight. Pulse weapons blasted upwards at a Choon, some fifty meters in length, as it began to rise out of its sheltered alcove, evidently attempting to flee. The Exi’Lauki attached to the infantry company charged forward and leapt, crushing several of its smaller cousins in the effort but managing to catch hold of the beast. No vocalization came from the creature as its tentacles exploded out of its lower plates, attempting to push the creature off. Its Rax rider leapt onto the Choon’s back and sprinted along its length before turning and rappelling down its front.

Seven giant eyes, orange and glassy, two meters tall and a quarter as wide, stared unblinkingly at him. He wondered whether this creature’s spheroid body actually had anything that could be called a head, but quickly decided that this was close enough. One by one, he swung from eye to eye, smashing his weapon into each and shattering them. The fourth, central eye took several blows, but it too cracked, just like the rest. A few tentacles appeared and attempted to pull him off, but the Rax slashed them off at the tips, enabling him to continue his work.

With a lurch, the Choon suddenly began to destabilize. Greyish ichor poured out of a mass of torn tentacles and several gaping holes in its carapace, as the Exi continues to rip its way through the alien, feasting ravenously as it goes. The Rax gloats at the victory for a moment, only to be caught off guard by a last desperate attack. A tentacle wraps around his midsection and pulls. The weapon upon which he has been bracing himself, still stuck deep into the Choon’s face, is jerked out of his hands. The Rax feels a huge acceleration then, suddenly, nothing but the whistling of moving air. Swift contact with alien soil quickly ends his existence, moments before the mutilated Choon begins its final descent. In a shower of blood, his body, buoyant no longer, strikes the earth. Darkness all too slowly as the horde sets upon him.

*****

The Dancer feels an itch on her back, and brushes it away. The Lauki landing force is decimated. Their bomb fizzles and spits arcs of lightning off into the distance.

Now she feels it. The Dancer hears the screams of her children ringing out through the ether. They cry not out of pain, but out of grief as their infant potentials are forever ended and crushed. The Dancer does not know this kind of suffering.

She must defend her brood.

The knowledge of Sanath is still in her mind. They have warned of this. Is this what they refer to as war? A Choon does not know war. All consumption has a purpose, and it is not war. This, however, is without and beyond meaning.

*****

The Gardener races to the location of the Dancer. He sees more and more of his mother’s ilk scouring the lands below him. Already they are engaged in their blind slaughter.

Somewhere below, a Rax’Lauki holds back one of the terrible beasts, the Exi, from consuming the fallen body of a Choon. The unruly creature rips the Rax’s torso off and and proceeds.

Blind. Idiots.

In the distance, the grand figure of the Dancer appears on the horizon, a black smudge against the setting sky. He approaches, as a debate rages internally. Mir, the onetime dominant personality of The Watcher, is indignant at the potential of double subservience, but the other voices offer their counsel to Daz, the Gardener. They will all be destroyed if they cannot commune with the Dancer.

The Gardener is now very close, dwarfed by the vast figure of his elder. He approaches submissively, offering himself. The Dancer gently caresses his back, drawing him closer and closer to her body. The Gardener braces himself for his last moments before the world closes around on him. He is buried in the mass of the Dancer’s tentacles. Hard jaws stab into his back then crack open his hardened back like a book. His body washes away under the onslaught, leaving only his mind, hovering in the dark. One of the voices soothes Daz, as they begin to feel a sensation of movement. The old framework of the Gardener’s inner world, a series of green towers, begins to fade and crack into the blackness.

A golden orb of lights and tunnels appears in the distance. Daz draws nigh, to see the radiant figure of Maz, the Dancer. She is smiling, coquettish and motherly at the same time. A crowd of other figures hang back, the lesser voices of the Dancer’s interior.

“You are Maz, and you enter.”

“You are Daz, and you offer hospitality.”

With the formalities passed, the Dancer’s prime mind embraced the new arrival then moved onwards to Mir.

“So, the Watcher at last accepts my invitation?” Maz laughed warmly, while Mir hovered, curled in on himself in a mixture of anger and dejection.

“Your pride will recover in time I’m sure.” Maz laughed again, like a pirouette of thought.

“Milady, I have important news which brings me here.” Daz is uncertain, cowed by the powerful presence of the Dancer.

“Tell me, Daz.”

“These beings which attack you are of terrible strength and unclear motive. They can destroy our shell of the in a single blow, but they make no attempt to seize our minds. Mir, if you may.”

Mir, first mind of the Watcher, unfurled from his sulking and spoke.

“They are a compound, the Lauki and the Maus. The former are of a wide variety, utterly antisocial and uncommunicative. They do naught but scream when spoken to. The Maus are more coherent, but still uncooperative. They claim that our communication violates them.”

The Dancer mulled this information over.

“The same violation has been claimed by Sanath when I try to converse with them- they seem to prefer indirect conversation, and I am willing to oblige their odd preferences. Perhaps I could do the same with these Lauki-Maus.”

“I wish that I could say otherwise,” spoke Daz, “But they do not respond to such communications.”

Maz frowned, but the mind of Daz was part of her own. She knew it was true.

“Very well. I will contact Sanath and inform them of these events, and continue to protect us from these invaders.”

Daz nodded curtly. Maz set out in a flourish, delving into more distant regions of her inner mind.

Our relations may need to be positively altered. A hostile and violent force has arrived on my world (La, Devkan-T), and I fear that I will die along with my children.

The Collectivity is the thought-concept that each species has the sovereign right to live the way it evolved without intrusion and domination by other species. We join together to provide a common voice for the species committed to coexistence. Those who are amenable to this concept are united into our decision-making structure, independent and equal. Those who are not will be made to comply according to the doctrine of the Protocols. Our data seems to indicate that your race does not speak with one voice, but your organism is welcome to join the Collectivity.

We wish to make a certain fact available to your knowledge. The vast majority of species in existence consider their biological integrity to be an inalienable right. The lifecycles of these beings do not, as yours do, possess a merging mechanism by which minds are united.

While an understanding exists that the evolutionary processes of your species appears to protect the individual minds of those who are absorbed, this is, as far as we are aware, a unique way of being. Please understand that most species communicate in this 'indirect' fashion.

With that said, we wish for you to provide us any biological data pertaining to these Lauki-Maus that you have absorbed, particularly a sampling of their genetic codes.

From this, we can bio-engineer a pathogen to sterilize worlds of their presence, and possibly tailor compliant forms of these species to later live within the Collectivity. While we prefer not to cause death, we will act to eliminate threats to our being.

This information is useful. Biological data pertaining to the Lauki may be collected by your Nitha scouts present on La/Devkan-T, from the numerous individuals already present here. You will find that they are quite numerous.

Additionally, I am amenable to your proposal regarding entry into the Collectivity.

Excerpts from the Zeptha'tsa tapes - The Ossudra

The following is an excerpt of a transcription of a Zeptha'tsa reciting the story of her people to her daughter. The recital is a time-honored tradition whereby the tsa passes her knowledge onto her kin, an event which has happened exactly the same way for several hundred generations of tsa. As the Tras'na don't have a writing system, this oral tradition is crucial to the preservation of Tras'na history. In this particular excerpt, the the Tsa tells a parable about certain social traditions implicit to Tras'na society, using the Ossudra as an example of why things are the way they are.

Listen daughter, for when you come of age, but one Tras'ta shall you have at a time. Do not carry any more than the fluids of one suitor, or you shall be scorned, and become outcasts. We are Tras'na, the beloved, selected by the gods, know that the way of the single suitor is the way of righteousness, the way of the multiple suitors is the way of the tainted. Hold true to these teachings my daughter, lest ye fall in among the Ossudra.

Listen daughter, for after the banishment of Ukra she traveled alone far from the sight of Chin'tsa. She was sad and lonely, and so called to Teso for aid. Teso heard the cries of his daughter and so he traveled to the lair of Chin'tsa and, using his silver tongue, persuaded a number of suitors to come with him to be with Ukra. Faithful to their new queen, these suitors too took on but one name, so great was their shame. They built a meager palace, and when the time came to select a suitor, Ukra took the fluids of 5 suitors simultaneously.

Listen daughter, for the children begot by Ukra were of hideous shape and form. So grotesque were these children that they were no longer Tras'ta; to look at one is to look at the face of evil itself. Too hideous to describe are these things. Not just hideous are these, but angry, and uncouth too. They do not respect their queen, nor do they hold to the proper order and custom. These creatures care not for their queen but as a source of brothers to fill their rank, and when they grow tired of their queen, she is disposed of like a common Urtra [a parasitic pest found in unkempt nests].

Listen daughter, for such is the fate that awaits those who do not keep things in their proper place. To take multiple fluids is to lead an inharmonious life, and imbalances lead only to destruction. Such is the truth of Chin'tsa.

Great story Owen. :) Can't wait to hear some more of what's happening on Jen'Tsa.

I've added species descriptions to the front, and I'm done everything up to the Nurm. If you want to write your own description in that style, just post it and I'll add it- generally I've just been editing peoples filled-in templates.

We represent the Collectivity of Sanath, an association of the species that have chosen to reject violence and respect mutual interaction. The system of Devkan-T is now under our protection. We request your immediate withdrawal, and the commencement of negotiations.

If this request is refused, we will be forced to take action to remove hostile threats from this system, in concert with the organic entity known as Dancer and related organisms.

You cooperate with this monstrosity? These agents of the demon herself. She who opposes life and the natural order? What do you know of the way of things? How long have you gazed the stars with such respect for the cycle of life? Never. Together we work to extinguish the foul creatures you seem to cherish and we do it for the universe. Order in the system is our goal. We will not let her challenge our authority. We shall not.

You speak of mutual interaction yet you are so ignorant to the bonds of life. The euphoric connections between every living thing. Such a fine balance that you wish to upset. Violence is necessary to preserve the peace that all life will eventually hold dear. Aid us or step aside. We have no need for you and no sadness will be felt for your extinction.
