I'd download the patch, not through the game, but as an executable file (just follow the civfanatics main site to "Patches and Updates").
Then you can execute the file, and if you've already installed the update, it will be removed and you can reinstall it without having to install the whole game twice. If you have not installed the update, the patch will of course update your game
Just check that the savegame is somewhere in the Civ directories, I'm not sure the patch actually looks everywhere for Civ assets.
My plan is to rename the current folders and reinstall the game. Then patch to 1.61. I do not want to stay at this patch level so I can continue in this game. It's the only one that I have problems with.
This PBEM can not be upgraded because of the lock modified assets. I renamed the C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 1.61 then uninstalled Civilization 4 and did a full reinstall. Then I applied the 1.74 patch to Vanilla Civ 4. It's a right pain but I do not want to give up playing HOF and GOTM in order to keep playing this game.
I wish I read this first, it's from Ainwood in the GOTM threads.
The alternative is to create a copy of your full \SId Meier's Civilization 4\ directory, and use it to play the GOTM/WOTMs whilst you apply the patches to the original directories (a "dual install").
Please note too: Installing BTS automatically patches your Civ4 (and warlords) installs. You don't even get asked for confirmation.
My set up is now a bit of a mess and I'll probably wind up removing everything anf fully reinstalling Vanilla, Warlords and BTS.
