SGOTM 05 - Geezers

For culture the island is not too bad. Room for 6 cities and more or less isolated.

But for culture, you need three outstanding cities. Not sure I see those since the island is narrow. I can't imagine anyone finishing culture on this map before 1600 AD... although CFR is an elite team, so who knows?

If I were to do it again, beeline to IW to start jungle removal, settle out all of the home island with an emphasis on cottages, then CoL for CH, then off to conquer. Going after lush island as early as we did could have worked if we could have made peace with the other AI's to keep our tech pace going.

Our situation seems pretty hopeless unless we make peace with Asoka. I wonder how long until Cyrus launches?

/edit: At this point, I'm all for 20 turn sets until we finish...

Rather go out with a flourish - and a bit of a laugh - then just die boringly in a corner not doing anything much at all.
 
Nothing really happened during this turnset. I piled up some forces (mostly cannons and grens), and did some troop transfers. In some 5-10 turns a DOW to Isabella is possible.
I did some scouting in Cyrus and Asokas territory, most of it is already railroaded.


Turn 1:
Rene Descartes is born in Athens. He pus some effort in researching some useless stuff called "Physics", but to no avail - he wasn't able to research it completly (2700 of 11000).

Turn 2:
Qin decides to trade us some fish for our gold. Since all our fish is plliaged, this is now possible. Maybe we get a +1 modifier in 100 turns... It probably doesn't matter, so I accept.

Turn 5:
Steam Power comes in.
Coal is near Kyoto and near Tabriz, but both are outside the BFC.
Building some more Cannons, researching Railroad.

Turn 8:
St Thomas Quinas is born in Kyoto. Settling him there.

Turn 12:
A freshly built galleon is sunk by a indian destroyer :-(
It seems impossible to move a galleon to tabriz without some indian destroyer appearing out of nowhere. Building more cannons, grens and cavallery at lushland.
Asoka has SAM infantry, BTW. A grandier was able to kill a standard infantry, fortified on a jungle hill in Asokas land, but was killed by a SAM in the next turn.

Turn 16:
Biology is in. This is somewhat unexpected. Still building cannons :)

Turn 18:
Railroad is in. Combustion in 13 Turns.

Looking at the tech screen it seems we will learn Democracy and Physics shortly.

Yes, arties rock. They are nice, but I hope that in CIV 5 the programmers go back to the artillery system of civ 3. Bombarding from range and capturing these thingies were much more fun.

BTW I will be away for a week from 25th - 31st October. I will have access to the internet being able to post here, but I won't have the game with me, so I need to be skipped. I hope you guys can finish this one until the deadline. :whipped:
 
I'm actually more available than normal during this final week! Taking a break from work, but will be able to play at some point during each of the days.

If we keep up the 20-turn sets, and play every day or thereabouts, then we'll drag this thing kicking and screaming right up to the bitter apocalyptic end!

What is our main strategic aim, though?
Are we heading for Izzy with cannons, lots of cannons, or are we going to get our Apollo project and see how close a space race we can lose?
 
If you feel we can go for Izzy, try it, but we somehow have to get rid of her SOD. If we continue to build up we will slow down research even more, so if we go for the stars we should stop building more units or at least we should disband older units replacing them with new ones to lower our military supply costs to speed up research.
 
Those old cats still could be used for lowering the cultural defenses and aid in killing the SoD.

Other outdated units in an attacking stack are not that useful, maybe for killing off some heavily wounded units. But I like to keep them in denfese postions, with some cash for emergency upgrading they still can be useful.

Currently our military support is consuming only about 10-15% of our research, don't overestimate the military cost at this point in the game. And while nonstop building military in the last 20 turns, I was able to turn the research slider up 10% by finishing some city improvements at key positions, a bank at kyoto most notably.

Even with the research help from the barbarians I think we are way to late to reach for the stars, unfortunatly :-(
 
I haven't had a look at the save, so I did not know about the actual military supply costs. Last time I checked it was much worse.

I agree that most likely we are late for the stars, but we can try to get the Wooden Spoon at least. :) I do not think that we will be able to achieve a dom victory. We would need the AIs to fight each other, so they get rid of their big stacks, but this seems VERY unlikely.

Maybe we can delay the spacerace a bit by using spies.

Note that there are still a few unit moves to be made in the current turn for the next player to play around with. I think it is well worth having a good look at our current position, because I'm sure that a good player could make SOMETHING of it. The implosion of Asoka has changed the dynamics of the game significantly.

Perhaps a good thing we didn't get a chance to DoW Izzy earlier. :crazyeye: There doesn't seem any immediate downside in staying at war with Asoka for a bit longer although I notice Asoka will offer 120 :gold:, 3 :gold: per turn and his world map at present.

The question is what do we do now? I suppose we could try and backstab Izzy, after grabbing peace with Asoka naturally, whilst the majority of her forces are probably in Asoka's lands. Alternatively now that Asoka's otherwise engaged we could pull back our forces from lush island and attack Sally. Since Qin has arty he may also be beelining for gunships as well so we may want to skip him for the time being.

EDIT: Of course the matter may be taken out of our hands. Quite why Cyrus should have such a strong force on silver island is an interesting question.

EDIT 2: What a shame there's only one week left to the deadline. :cry: The game looks much more interesting now.

8 days to go, in which to play maybe 120 turns? That should be pretty achievable if play 20 turns per day. I'd really like to see what The Hawk has to say about this position.

I do think we need to choose a way forward though. Maybe we need to build up a war chest for a mass upgrade to Artillery and Infantry?

Anyway, AgedOne, definitely play within 24 hours because we guaranteed to go nowhere if we don't play.

If we really come against the deadline, then maybe the last person can just keep playing until the end. That person can be temporarily nicknamed "The Closer".
