Firaxis currently has three products in development, with a fourth that will "probably" be starting up soon. Pirates! and Civilization 4 are the only products that Briggs would identify, but he did shed some light on Firaxis' development cycle. "We have three phases of development-prototype, production and final. The prototype phase lasts about a year and the production…we try to keep to about a year. We like to have two things in prototype and one thing in production at the same time. That's makes it possible for us to stagger our releases." Briggs finds that such a plan helps keep the company's staff of just over 50 people busy.

So.....this is great news, huh??

Makes me wanna dance and sing ;)

Excellent news indeed! :king: I wonder what stage it is at? Prototype I expect! I am off to the link now to see what else I can find out. Thanks for the news! :D

Civ 4 already ? But C3C is barely out ! :D

True, but if C4 is only at the prototype stage............................ You've got to think ahead in this game! :goodjob:

And to think that Firaxis regularly reads these boreds. Hopefully (quite) a few of our ideas in the Civ4 thread will come to be.

THen we might see Civ4 in 2 years time then perhaps. 1 year, if they have had Civ4 in prototype for a year, as they might have had.

It is certainly good that the 'powers that be' read the posts on this site. I think Firaxis do take notice of what we want and put at least some of the suggestions into the next game. They would be foolish not to do this of course as we're a large part of their customer base. Still, that wouldn't stop some companies from ignoring us!

Somehow I get the impression that this is very early days in the developement of Civ 4.

If that is indeed the case, then it's not entirely unlikely that we are looking at release sometime Q1 or 2 2006, making it 5 years between every civ game to date:

Civ 1: 1991
Civ 2: 1996
Civ 3: 2001
Civ 4: 2006?

Asmodean, in the current state of the industry, waiting for another 5 years would hardly be profitable. They did it with Civ 3 the profitable way - an expansion after a year, and another one a further year later... but now, releasing a sequel a bit earlier would be probably of benefit. I'd place my bets at Christmas season of 2005. After all, they need no Half-Life 2 style graphics engines, so two years might be time enough to develop the game.

It does sound like they're still early in the development stage. I can't really say, since it's been a month since I was last at Firaxis. ;) (check out the credits for C3C.)

Civ4 is in prototype now, and will probably be in production when Pirates is released. And Jesse Briggs said that production time is about a year. So sometime 2005 I would guess the game is released.

I'm happy, but I don't want Civ IV to come out for at least 3 years. I'm perfectly happy with Civ III and would feel exploited if they were to release another one so soon ;)

I would be perfectly happy to have a new Civ game in 1 years time.

I've read somewhere Pirates was in the testing phase, so it's likely to go out before CIV4.
Anyway... Pirates... Oh boy. What a great game !

Pirates is still in the pre-alpha phase. Expected to be released Q4 2004

Great news:thumbsup:
I hope they don't rush with it, I like quality in Civilization games
