most disheartening moments in games?

- Ximicacan! Ximicacan! Ximicacan!
Montezuma makes peace 10 turns later. After the Peace Treaty ends ...
- Ximicacan! Ximicacan! Ximicacan!
Montezuma gets wiped out. 10 turns later ...
- Chinii suld udur chini irj dee!
Oh great. Now the hordes are coming. Time to build the Great Wall. 12 turns later ...
- Genghis Khan has declared war on Wu Zetian
- Wu Zetian has completed the Great Wall
God Dammit!

Recently moved up to Immortal - rolled a great Desert start with Poland. Managed to nab Desert Folklore, then both Pagodas and Peace Gardens!!!

A few turns after using my 2nd GP for Reformation (gardens) and three turns away from Borobudur, Ethiopia converts my capitol to Protestantism, crippling my faith production and ensuring I will create 3 missionaries for him if I finish the wonder...:wallbash:

A new one just happened to me..
When your enemy discovers AA guns right after you build a massive bomber fleet to attack their capital...

I suppose the two things that annoy me the most are the "one-turn wonder snatch", and when your AI neighbour...the one who is getting the wonders you can't quite get to ....builds the Great Wall.

When you play this game it is conditional to a large degree on you suspending your sense of disbelief a fair bit....you realize to make the game fun and somewhat realistic-appearing the developers have to build certain mechanics into the game, but sometimes it is all a bit much.... When I get sufficiently irritated by it I just start a new game...;)

The Great Wall can, of course, be overcome even in the early game, but you'll probably have to expect a lot of dead Pikemen and a few sacrificed Composite or Crossbow units...best to have a nice productive city to churn them out. And if the AI is just too strong....or you miss your timing...then it's a long wait for Artillery....

Another Venice one: The Start Bias is supposed to place Venice's settler in the best coastal spot before placing other's civs' settlers. But it seems that every time I play Venice, I settle in place, and then I starting scouting - only to find multiple locations that would have been better starting spots. :(

EDIT: In my current Venice game, I have a whopping 0 (zero, zip, zilch) sea resources within the 3 tile radius.

My last game + on fractal settle on an inside sea with only 2 other coastal cities. One was a CSI need to buy for cargo food. Venice is a bit weaker in such conditions.

This is less disheartening, more annoying but recently I've had barbarians attack my scout, on full health over snatching an unguarded settler. ( the first one was Greek , the second Mayan). I've also had barbs attack a health scout over an wounded a.i. archer. I'm starting to get a bit paranoid at this stage :)

I just had one.

Beautiful island start. Nice, blended terrain with room for my Tradition-friendly four cities. My capital was overflowing with copper and gold with lots of trees to chop for wonders. I played through, got the Great Library, the Mausoleum, Pyramids, Oracle...wonderful game! I even have Mt Fuji over by my other city, which is good because I'm producing zero faith at this point. I just have to let my tiles expand a few more turns, though.

Beeline for Theology. Ramp up production through the roof. The religions start disappearing...that's okay...5 turns until Hagia Sophia and there's still two religions...I can make it...the only thing...

Hagia Sophia has been built in a faraway land.

$#^%!!!

I'm actually fairly confused as to why this happens. I've seen un-escorted AI settlers walk right next to a barb and nothing happens, but the second my settler/worker is alone, barb.

a horde of impis appear at my borders, cusco just defended by 2 composites (instead of plossible 5-6). No money to rush buy anything nor bribe zulu to attack s.o. else

First to ideologies, chooses order because everyone likes order right? :D, the 2 most influential civs decide to go autocracy... anarchy all over my kingdom :c5angry:

Wow, now that's a downfall in just 9 turns.

Yeah, I hate forgetting about national wonder and settling a city  few times it happened when I was like 1 turn from building National College

-engineer rushbuild forbidden palace in the capital

-lose wonder race to AI

????

Getting backstabbed, and after the war is over, denouncing the backstabber. Then everybody hates me because they had a DoF with the backstabber.

I habitually upgrade scouts with visibility to give then sight beyond sight when scouting and lo! I once found krakatoa within 2 tiles of a single coastal tile jutting out invitingly from a coast on about 20th turn with a scout, simultaneously revealed a CS a few tiles north.....just barely leaving it "settleable" on that 1 magic tile - phew! I thought this may be the first time ever I can settle krakatoa in history! Next move south with the scout...."you have met kathmandu! Happy happy joy joy 30 gold!"......

Oh no....the tile! Count the tiles quick!! 1....2....3!!!!!!! Dam. Youuu. kathmanduuuu!

I was stuck in "gaze with jaw dropped" mode for 5 minutes, recounting the tiles, considering attack options on either of the city states....imagining an orgy of destruction as I razed a CS and incurred epic diplo hits. Everything was so perfect a moment ago. Can I return to that point in time?? I can live without the 30 gold....i just want that moment back :'(

Needless to say, I rage quit....and kicked my hard drive.....possibly kracked-a-toa.
