Privateers

I've found that having 1-2 Privateers in your navy can really assist in trying to mitigate damage to your main fleet... especially vs cities or a larger naval force.

Since the AI will generally attack wounded units first, I like to use Privateers to capture an enemy ship in the same turn that I move my fleet in to range of a city or large enemy force. In this way my captured & wounded new ship, will draw probably 2 shots. This leaves my main fleet in better condition for an extended battle.
