Here are some nice free FTP programs... thought some of you may find the list useful. Who doesn't like freebies?

FTP = File Transfer Protocal (IIRC).

Basically, you need programs like these to maintain websites.

Well, they're not 100% neccessary to maintain a website. Having ftp access and using one of those programs just makes it easier.

Personally, I use SmartFTP.

Dosn't IE function as a ftp program?

Personally, I use Kftp (and occasionally gftp). They are free, but then, most Linux programs are....

Does it really matter what FTP program you use? They are all quite the same right?

No, they are not all the same. Most ftp clients use unencrypted connections. If you are doing only anonymous ftp with public sites, these are fine. If you are e.g. maintaining a password-protected web site, then you should encrypt your connections. For windows I prefer WinSCP, which does sftp (secure ftp) and scp (secure copy). Most ISPs support sftp and scp connections these days. For linux, gftp can do sftp...

SmartFTP is the best of the bunch.

I usually use AceFTP if I am on Windows.

Does the job, at any rate.
