How to play multiplayer with a Mac?

I want to play Civ4 with my friend who has it on Steam on PC.

I have Civ4 for Steam on Mac. When I try to play online, it tells me to login to GameSpy, which I know is nonexistent. When we try to connect by Direct IP, we enter the correct address, but it always just says "timed out".

Any advice about how to access the Steam lobby or how to get the Direct IP to work? (on Mac)

this requires two steps.

1. your friend could revert his version to the old fashioned version with DirectIP support. Instructions by 2k.
Now, if you has a common network setup and your firewall and router doesn't blockade Civ4:BTS, you can already play together with your friend over DirectIP. Unfortunatly a third person would be blockades.

2. To use more as two people you must redirect your Civ4 version to a Gamespy replacement server. Here, you find our instructions for this step.
