Which Generals/field marshals (both army and navy-fleet admirals included), who were not rulers/leaders/kings of their countries deserve the consideration of being the greatest ever?
I suppose for this to work, it has to be Napoleon's generalship before becoming ruler. Or is the question about generals who never became ruler? If that's the case, even Hannibal is out.
