What have you decided on Great People? In the old World 2008 thread I made the suggestion to replace Great Prophets with "Great Intellectuals" to cover philosophers, politicians, journalists, dissidents and people of faith. Along with this suggestions I posted a list with possible great people names. Did you use that list? For the case you're not that far I'll post the same list with some additions below. (For example I added the recent Nobel Prize Winners...)

I also suggest to rename Great Merchants "Great Entrepreneurs".

Note: I chose only persons who are still alive or who died after 2000. Of course it is a subjective list. The artists were super difficult, especially musicians...for them I chose a mixture out of personal favourites, musicians who sold a lot of records after 2000 and ones who got awarded for their lifetime achievements with a major award.

I think personally we need to cut down severely on Great Artists, and perhaps Great Creators or something different might be more appropriate?

Why?
It's just a name list. It works like city names list, not like a civ/building/unit list. The longer the list the better, am I wrong? The longer the list the less probable that after a few turns only the message "Great Artist was born in..." appears when a new Artist was born. I'd like to see the other lists as long as the artist list but since those are not my field of profession I have more difficulties finding good names.

Well okay then we need to 'revise' the list. Some just don't work for me. Linkin Park for example are a group of people and I wouldn't consider them to be one of the greatest achievements musically of the last century. I mean you may like them and I hold nothing against that, but we need to consider music and arts that would be appreciated in 50 years time.

Actually I hate Linkin Park. :D As I said, I tried to put some objectivity into that by choosing musicians that had the top numbers in selling records after 2000. That is mainly Eminem, Green Day, Norah Jones, Linkin Park, Shakira, Britney Spears. (I don't like neither of them... ;)) And I added some that got a Grammy for lifetime achievements.

I agree that we actually need to consider arts that would be appreciated in 50 years. Those who stand the test of time. But if we could predict that we could earn an awful lot of money...

However, if you have additions to make, feel free to post them. :)

Add Kurt Cobain and Neil Young to that artist list and I'm happy. And what about Stephen Hawking as a great scientist?

Actually Kurt should've killed himself 6 years later to have been on that list from the beginning. But I agree he's worth an exception. Neil Young should definately be on that list and how could I forget Stephen Hawking??? All added.

If no one likes Linkin Park, get them out I say.

Let's not use top sellers for "great artists". Let's use actual great artists, not just studio created BS. These people don't spread culture etc, the real greats do.

And hell, it's our mod, so let's use people WE think are great.

Scratch Cobain, I didn't see your method before I posted that (living past year 2000).

So

Bob Dylan
Paul McCartney
Neil Young
Eddie Vedder
Eric Clapton
Pete Townsend
Jimmy Page
Dixie Chicks (the main one I guess)
Willie Nelson
Jack White

Clearly others will have to share artists who aren't from the USA/UK/Canada. I am not what you would call a man of the world, my knowledge of culture is clearly limited to what surrounds me.

Cool, I vote on the exception for sure.

awesome work there old boy

Linkin Park may not be our taste BUT they have sold 50million albums worldwide, i think they merrit inclusion.

also:
Great Entrepreneurs
Richard Branson

Great Artist
Ville Valo

Oasis have also sold over 50 million records, so that comment is void; Great People should not be included on the basis of quantity, that is utterly ridiculous.

the oasis should be on the list aswell

popular music is a major part of modern culture and should be reflected, be it Linkin Park, Oasis, Madonna or Marilyn Manson. Please bear in mind these are names for great people, not something thats going to mess with the game mechanics...

I'd also like to remind you that Linkin Park and Oasis aren't singular entities, they are groups of people. I'm not disregarding popular music as a part of modern culture, but we are after all choosing 'Great' people not 'People who are popular now'.

but thats the whole premise, its about "now", the world today. Who decides who is great? In entertainment arent Great and Popular sometimes one and the same, especially in the short term.

As it is I see no problem with having a music group or band as a Great Artist.

Well...the thing is, they actually do spread culture. Never seen a bunch of Korean guys all dressed in Linkin Park shirts?

That's exactly how I see it.

Concerning Oasis' 50 million records... That was about in the last millennium. ;) I have a thing for them but I'd rather not put them in the list because of the amount of sold records for said reasons. But if you want them in because you like them, no problem dude. :)
As for record sales: I looked at each year from 2000 on and put each music artist on the list that sold the most records in that year. I'd rather not go back into the Nineties.

Hey, I'll add each of your favourite artist (directors and writers are also welcome...) to the first list as long as you have some more names to the other Great People's lists to add. :D

You're right, we could use full lists in every category.

You're totally right. I'll try to fill the other lists up...and of course I'd be thankful for every name you have for me.

Actually taking another look at the list, it's great already! Sure we can always use more, but it looks to me as if their are enough names there already to start. Did you gather most of those names yourself ianinsane, or what? Great stuff there.
