Brimstone
Chieftain
Rome
Legions rule classical and beyond. By the time the AI gets long-swords the legions are so promoted as to not make any difference. Fast roads. Liberty & Honor. Conquer the nearest 2 or 3 civs unless one is a wonder producer, then save him for later.
By 1AD, the game is won, it's just a slow roll to science or go full domination. Happiness is the limiting factor.
I have played all the civs and give them another try now and again, but I always roll back to Rome. Second favorite is a tie between France & Mongols, but I hate waiting until the Renaissance to get started.
I play on Immortal.
