Does the getting 5 ruins with pathfinder achievement still work if I upgraded to a crossbowman? I don't want to waste my time if I screwed myself out of it already.

doubt it. If you think about how it's most likely coded it would have to be a pathfinder unit itself, not simply one that was at one time identified as such.

It's difficult to say, the achievement requires you to find it with a Pathfinder, OR, with the Native Tongue promotion. Although if it states that you need to use the "Pathfinder", it probably needs to be a Pathfinder.
