I also recommend Paradox games like Europa Universalis IV, Crusader Kings II and Victoria II. It has a very steep learning curve and you will get overwhelmed in the beginning, but if you want to invest the time in it that it needs, it's very rewarding. Learn the basic mechanics and watch some LP's, if you're interested.

Since you've never played Civ IV, you might want to try it. It's probably cheap, and a lot of people think it is a much better game than V.

Ok, seriously. Lol, does no one bother to check out any of the Ageod games?

Props to Rise of Nation, and to the other classics mentioned above.
Space Empires IV is great, and if you can find them, any of the ROTK series for PC deserves an honorable mention.

The words Classic Ironman still give me a complex!

A friend reckons Rome Total War 2 is pretty tasty bit haven't tried it myself.

You should definitely check out endless legend (like civ in a fantasy setting) and possibly endless space (scifi version of civ that takes place on a galactic scale instead of planetary scale like beyond earth) they are both made by amplitude studios and have great aesthetics and original settings.

I'm a big fan of Dominions 4. The game has a steep learning curve though.
