Thought this would be fun. Built a 3 city base, beelined astronomy, had a team of settlers and workers and escorts all set to be the first to the new world. Cross the ocean, see the shallow waters..and then...Kathmandu??? What a let down. Kind of had a feeling based on the number of city states I had encountered that they would be over there, but was still a let down.

It's true to life. When Spain hit the New World, they found a multitude of indigineous cultures already living there. Throughout the colonial era of the Americas there were native people groups which the European powers had to either entreat in some way or conquer, and gift giving (the primary interaction with city states) was common for both groups.

So if you think of the city-states as indigenous peoples, it fits in very well and is strictly better than the alternative (an empty, barren continent with nobody there).

I was expecting a whole lot of barbarians (which seems to definitely be there as well)...Its just odd seeing a fully developed city as the first sight.

In my only game on the Terra map I played as Polynesia and simply headed for the New World on turn one. It was fun although the fact that I was just getting my feet wet with Civ5 (I was a late adopter) meant that I never made up the turns that I lost while blundering around trying to find the New World. I'll have to give that gambit another try.

The problem with Terra map is that is that AIs won't colonize the New World. Or perhaps, settle one or two cities in the Atomic Era and if one of the shores of the New World is not too far away from the Old World. But in overall the player will have no competition. At all.

Surely the complaint is that it was the Nepalese capital he encountered there, rather spoiling the true-to-life feel? Cahokia would have been fine (I really, really love the fact that they included Cahokia as a city-state).

On a Terra map I did find Venice, Marrakech and other CSes in the right place (and I think Lhasa was on the Tibetan Plateau), but I found others completely out of place - Sydney was in southern Africa. I think CSes should be programmed to spawn at the right spot in Terra maps.

Well, presumably the Americans, Aztecs, Maya and Inca spawn there if they're in the game at all.

What does a Terra map do if both the Ottomans and Byzantines spawn in the same game?

The Ottomans would spawn to the south of the Byzantines, corresponding with the origins of the Turkish people on the Anatolian Peninsula. Constantinople wasn't captured until 1453.

I think you misunderstand what a terra map script does. It is not an Earth map with accurate starting locations. It is a continents type map where the major empires (players both human and AI) start in a large group of continents representing the "old world" and a somewhat smaller set of continents is populated by barbarians and city states representing the "new world" on the map.

It would be very disappointing to beeline Astronomy and find Polynesia in the "new world" with cities and armies waiting for you.

Terra is just a two continent map, where everyone spawns on one continent, and can't get to the other until Astronomy. A few CSes and tons of Barbarians will be waiting, however.

The "Earth" map script, which is the one you are thinking about, randomizes starting positions, they are not based on real world locations. You'll have to download a mod if you want an Earth map with accurate starting locations.

Is there a mod to have the terra scripts just act as a normal map script, and have it so it's possible for civs to spawn on either continent?

I don't know, you'd have to check, but wouldn't that just be a continents game?

There's some subtle differences in the map generation, IMO.

Imagine it like

Archipelago > large islands > Small continents > Continents

Terra is more like contientents with the shape/distribution pattern changing instead of having bigger masses of land.

There's a Hemispheres map. According to the description it generates "Two large, fairly balanced continents. Suitable for duel or two-teams multiplayer." Also, "West vs East; "A region split vertically down the middle by a wide channel of water."

I haven't played either one and I don't know whether they're in Vanilla or came with DLC.

"It would be very disappointing to beeline Astronomy and find Polynesia in the "new world" with cities and armies waiting for you. "

Don't worry, even Polynesia doesn't leave her home continent. In Terra map, the AI seems absolutely unable to settle in the New World.
I'm very disappointed.... :(
