Trade with major civs

I seem to be having trouble sending caravans to other civ. Is there a step am not using? Currently playing Portugal and have traded with Beijing and Mecca. I have found everybody, but I cannot send then caravans.

They are probably too far away. Try cargo ships + harbors and caravansary + roads for increased ranges.

Also, several techs increase ranges.
