This is our first Deity level game for the GOTM feature. BUT DON'T BE INTIMIDATED! Deity level is not very difficult. I would not be surprise to see a King level player survive a Deity level game...

Have fun playing GOTM!

Well well well........

I must say that I really think that making a GotM on Deity level is wrong - I know that many king level players are most likely going to survive the ordeal but not very likely to win it. To make the GotM, which is supposed to be a fun competition to ALL the members of Civfanatics, on a level that is only regularly played by 20% of is, isn't fair to the other 80%!!!
To make the average level king (56%) should be our goal, with games one up(Emperor 33%) or down(Prince 76%) would seem much more fair to the majority of the members.

I hope that most of the members that are new to Deity level, take some time to re-read some of the tactics that have been posted about deity level, because they are probably going to need it, especially concerning happiness.

Well I've just started playing on King level after reading the most excellent strategic tips you folk have posted, and enjoyed it.

I'll have a go and not be embaressed at the result, tho' doutless will be awed at some of the outrageous scores to be returned.

I have to say I agree largely with Shadowdale. I am all for GOTM games being as "inclusive" as possible. I think Deity is going to be too intimidating for many people and therefore they will either avoid GOTM IV or they will not play future ones on this level.

However, we did know in advance that this game would be at Deity level, and after much thought I do endorse this game provided that it is a single month's experiment. After it's done, I suggest that Matrix take note of all the results and the comments received. I'm sure there'll be many comments. We can then judge how often to repeat this kind of game, and we may decide not to repeat it at all.

I agree partly, Stormerne. I think that a Deity game once should be possible, but it shall be rare. But I don't think it's wrong as Shadowdale says.

I think there will be a lot people who will retire in 2020, but that's not bad. It's only a pity for the people who will die, but that won't be many.

Matrix,

Have you established a scoring system for GOTMIV?

And: Does "Bloodlust Mode? No" mean victory by conquest is unacceptable and we are all in the space race?

No it just means that the Bloodlust mode is not "on" in this game. So you decide for yourself how you want to complete the game.

Thank God for that.......

Alpha Centauri here I come..........

BTW Matrix I agree that we should try a Deity game, but we should also try a Prince and a warlord game. And the fact that this game is the Deity means that it should probably be more than a year before the next deity level game.

Equal number of Prince/King/Emperor games with the rare Warlord/Deity game!!!

As someone who had barely gotten through King when the GOTM started, I would now feel comfortable at least trying Deity games. The two emperor games have given me much more confidence (and knowledge) to try a deity game. Unfortunately I don't think I'll get in on this one due to time demands, but I am certainly not going to skip it because it is deity. In fact, I'm already trying to scheme how I can get the time to play it, now that I know it is a Deity game.

If you had made GOTM I Deity, I probably wouldn't have even tried, but I've learned a lot in the last few months by challenging myself with these games.

I was condidering skipping this month's game due to busy schedule next couple weeks, but now you've laid down the Deity challenge, so I must accept!! Having never played above Prince before GOTM (and I lost that game), I am now confidently looking forward to my first Deity level game. I agree that it might scare off some prospective players, however. Matrix, one thing I would suggest tracking in this month's "experiment" is how many players we get. If the number drops way down, then perhaps Deity games should be avoided in the future. Personally, now that GOTM has raised the level of my playing, I welcome the occasional Deity game.

Indeed, Cactus Pete, the new scoring system is now working:

A=score
B=factor=50
C=finishing turn
D=max turns

GOTM score=A*B^((D-C)/D)
/200

I hope everyone knows about this!

Yikes, I actually didn't know that the new system was going into effect. Perhaps, Matrix, you should post this as a new post and explain how this new system works. I am assuming that we are talking about exponents here.

The new scoring system begins with GotM#4 not 3!!!
So the old scoring system works for the game we have all just finished

I am also surprised to see the new scoring system is being used already.

I want to see if I understand this. To apply the GOTM IV scoring system to the last game (just as an example, I realize it doesn’t start until next time), I finished with 2024 pts in 1894, meaning 294 turns out of 420,right? Can someone tell me if I am applying the formula correctly (see below)?

If I recall my high school algebra classes, proper order of operations is resolve parentheses first from inside out, then exponents, then * and / applied left to right, and finally + and – left to right.

ergo...

My score (S) would be
S = 2024 * 50 ^((420-294)/420)/200
S = 2024 * 50^(126/420) /200
S = 2024* 50^(.3) /200
S = 2024 * 3.23 /200
S = 6537.52/200
S = 32.69

Is this right????

Also, can anyone tell me what this means in broader terms? Maybe if you posted what the scores from previous GOTMs would be if the new system were in place, it would be clearer.

I agree with Tim. I know that this new system will begin with game #4, but I would like to get an idea of the socring nuances before I begin the game. And I am also a bit rusty on the math - I had to recite the "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" routine (parenthesis, exponentss, multiplication, division, addition then subtraction).

Pfff...
I've explained it all in the (what if) The rules should change! topic. I don't want to repeat it all.
However, I can give you this Excel file, which shows the effect of the new system. It is applied to my scores in the GOTM III and to some model.

The main thing to remember is that, as a rule of thumb, your GOTM score decreases by 1% every turn if you don't do anything to build it higher.

For a Deity game it works out like this:

Turn Multiplier(%)
1 24.77
10 22.78
20 20.75
30 18.91
40 17.22
50 15.69
60 14.30
70 13.03
80 11.87
90 10.81
100 9.85
110 8.97
120 8.18
130 7.45
140 6.79
150 6.18
160 5.63
170 5.13
180 4.68
190 4.26
200 3.88
210 3.54
220 3.22
230 2.93
240 2.67
250 2.44
260 2.22
270 2.02
280 1.84
290 1.68
300 1.53
310 1.39
320 1.27
330 1.16
340 1.05
350 0.96
360 0.87
370 0.80
380 0.73
390 0.66
400 0.60
410 0.55
420 0.50

Yes Tim you are right! Check the table and you'll find turn 294 is about halfway between multipliers of 1.68% and 1.53%, say 1.61%. 2024 x 1.61% = 32.6

I didn't manage to play the GOTM 3 but I will play it this time. I am wath you call a "King-player" but i will se it as a greate chalange to make a good Deithy game. And I hope that I will manage to become among the top 10 in the final results. I think that the new scoring system seems good.

I've been a Civ II player since it was released and mostly play at the King level. I must admit, I usually get bored toward the end of a game and rarely finish one. I am excited to try my first GOTM. I bet I'll pay much closer attention to my score! I have actually never played a game at the Deity level, so this GOTM will be a great motivator for me. Here's to survival!!!

I want to thank Thunderfall & Matrix for giving us deity level GOTM4! Hanging Gardens rules..

Secondly, thanks to Matrix for this new innovative score formula. It really encourages one to finish his game whenever he can as every turn take 1% away from the score. Exactly the goal that was being pursued for the GOTM concept!
