Budweiser Challenge for basic civ5. (only GK and BNW needed)

I've uploaded part 2 and the others shouldn't take too long

Total length of the playthrough is 4 hours aproximately.

part 1
part 2
part 3
part 4
part 5
part 6

This is pretty educational, but one thing that I'd love to see is good video on a more traditional start. One without the huge 500 free gold and all kinds of salt, to see how to build up in more realistic situations.

It is pretty awesome to see all those early wonders, while taking advantage of a good start, but I'd also be quite interested in seeing how you handle a more normal start.

If I can remember it after my current vacations I'll do that on one of the few civ I don't have the achievement or if someone posts another challenge.

I "sadly" can't for the next 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, Moriarte would be my go to Deity let's player if I had to pick one. Especially if you're into learning deity Domination

Spoiler :
Ok fellas and ladies if your out there, this is my favorite part of the game really, the write up! First of all congrats to you all on your wins at a better finish time and 2 others went Diplo too huh? I thought I would be the only one since I know most people frown upon this type of VC.

LOL KB at Skill_Dorado I was thinking Hello_Dorado when I found it pretty early and got the 500 gold! First time for me on SP doing that and I usually don't see it in my games anyway.

Really nice finish times Acken...very nice!

Erneiz_Hyde ... Im sorry you didn't get Petra I got it on t95 lol thats pretty late huh? I went liberty but hard buit it in St Peter so Im saying you could go liberty and get GE to finish it if you wanted or hard build it too. Ofcourse sometimes the AI just beats us to these darn things. Honestly I never built so many wonders in my life (21 total) I think I took 10 from Rome when I got the war going so that was 31 total and very abnormal for me, but I usually don't want to build them anyway.

Yes I agree this map was silly Acken almost like a set up if someone actually used map builder, lol!

Ok so a little on my game. Since it was Immortal, a level I am not very familiar with, I figured I could just about do whatever I wanted and still win at whatever time I wanted. I usually don't push myself for a fast win time anyway so that is why Ill probably be the worst finish time on the board but I honestly just got hypnotized with all the building and was like Im going to war Im going to war but didn't start the war untill t278.

So I settled on the salt in the middle, is that bad? Im so used to doing something like that on Deity to get early gold trades going Im not really sure. Anyway, I scouted around and found Rome, 3 culture CS's beside me ... geeesh! Ofcourse El_500_Goldorado! I used that money along with quick trades for rush buying 2 settlers. I went liberty so I got a free settler down the road so no hard building that. 4 city Liberty you say!!?? Oh well thats what happened. I was laughing at myself late in the game thinking "If I was going to do this, why didn't I just go good old Tradition." Well, I wanted to try this Liberty, Piety/Synergy Strat I've read about and never really tried since I usually don't bother with a church. 2 other civs going Piety gave me a bit of a struggle to rule the world with faith but my fpt was 100fpt in no time. That strat really can get you going with faith. My Reformation Belief was Jesuit and that seemed like all free science buildings. I teched very slowly since I figured you really don't need to worry about getting the lead. Ok so I just sat there got CS allies and wonders and was thinking I really don't know wtf Im doing lol. Full Liberty, Full Piety, over to Secularism down to Scholasticim and trying to time when to finish Rationlism. 6 deep into order late, Full Ratio and Full Patronage.

I really wanted to practice the Liberty, Piety, Warmonger tactic and I did, I just didn't get the War going untill t278. I took out Rome and another city and liberated a CS and got a good peace deal. I agreed to start a war with Persia when France asked and later went to war with him to liberate another CS and onto his city nearby. Just when I was going to take it and go onto Paris he gave me a great peace deal and I was like ok. So thats about it I had over 700gpt now and over 10,000 faith (I left+3613 Faith on the table at the end pulling +175fpt). I bought a bunch of GS's and got all the allies I could. Bribed up some wars and put the diplomats in for the Diplo VC at turn 320. Could I of finished earlier? Ofcourse, but it was late and I had insomnia and I was just playing this out of boredom really (excuses, excuses). The game was fun for me from turn 278-303 which is odd because usually the game is fun for me from turn 1-150. So it was nice to have a flip flop. Thanks for posting the game and thanks to all of you who are playing and sharing. I look forward to the Deity challenge in a few hrs!!

The screenshots highlight exactly the type of problem I have with my gameplay. I can't grow my cities very much; it usually stagnates around 20 pop, even in "really good" city spots like where you settled Moscow. In good city spots, like where you settled those other cities, I can't seem to get pop above 15-pop barrier like you. I'd really want to learn how to make humongous 40-pop cities fast like Acken or somebody else. Anyone have any advice? Caravans don't give much food and gpt suffers if I do; how do people get so much good.

FOOD!! I am certainly not the one to ask about Growth!! Did you see KBs cap at 47 pop 1 turn from 48 when he won the game. KB, Acken, and others can give you much better advice on growth. I never worry about feeding my people. Starve those peasants (pee-ons) I say!! On a serious note I went Liberty this game so you know... those guys went Tradition which will always outgrow Liberty by the thousands! I can tell you this. I was running food to my cap and St. Petersburg like crazy. At times I had 3 Caravans going to one or the other or both at times lol! I really wanted St. Petersburg to grow as much as possible since I had Petra in there and all those desert mines! The other two cities I could of made bigger but didn't need it. I couldn't work any more hexes anyway and instead of running food cargo ships to each other I opted for the GOLD! I was over +700gpt for some time.

20 pop is really low (on good games maybe early t100s my cap will surpass that);
Once your city gets past the really early game, there is no point in using the production focus anymore since those extra hammers upon growth is pretty insignificant.

There's a magic button called food focus. Click it.

I grew Moscow to 47 at t260+ using only 2 caravans and swords to plowshares belief despite passing up on some apples for hammers for wonderwhoring the whole game. There's no reason you can't do the same with river-rich cities.

When you want to rush a wonder, or just build things in general a bit faster, lock down hill gold/iron mines or whatever. Unlock them once your capitol does not need to hurry (hey I don't need that opera house in 3 turns if architecture is not going to be done in 5 turns for example); also run N# of non-science specialists only when your capitol is at least 20+N size is a rule of thumb I use (changes every game though depending on the terrain).

Spoiler :

4 cities have nice positions with strong production. I am pretty sure any victory condition can be done easily, already from t50.

I did ragequit when Rome built Petra at the 3rd city with one desert tile... seems that he rushed it with liberty finisher GE.

Honesty from glory... Nice to know I am not the only one that will rage quit, when the strategy gets blown early.

I finished on turn 280, CV. In this game, Rome/France went haywire, Atilla conquered too much land; Ramses and Morocco got short end of the stick - quite different from what anyone else had.

I made the crucial mistake of not building musicians' guild until later - my fpt was more than high enough to net me 3 GMs (I planted 2 GPs before using following 2 for religion - guess that really helped). BTW, what's the approximate amount of tourism in which you can start performing with GMs?

The major gripe I have with this game is why I finished so late, despite having such a blessed start: skill dorado + friends with half the cs on continent after clearing 2 encampments + pottery AND writing from ruins = t280 finish? Not sure how, even after numerous food caravans and food ships, my cities are still so small. And why I finished like 75 turns later than Acken. I have screenies and saves; anyone care to take a look and give some advice?

I just played this map and was the challenge to do a CV? xD
Well i just played the map without reading the thread so i did a SV on Turn 279

Spoiler :

Spoiler :
i read that the map is a bit cooked but the start is really ridicolous. Soooo much food and so much salt...
I was surprised to get Skill-Dorado on top so i did not even steal a single worker but bought one and build one.
Basically the map allows you to do a game without a single unit (besides the early 1-2 archer/ scouts to clear bandits) because your defensive position is so strong even without units :D

i did go wonderwhore mode in the midgame and did some shenanigans where i failed some beeling and optimization.
I could not get a WLTKD in my capital up to turn 75 because the resource was not easy to get. In the midgame i payed up to 30gpt + resources for some WLTKDs but the population was worth it.

Main fun facts: Hard Build Petra in St. Petersburg ---> GG City
Had the complete continentn under my religion in turn 150 but egypt managed to overcome my relitgion with spamming in 50 turns.
Failed with bulbing (started way to late, hab 8 GS before hubble and started bulbing after hubble which leaded to 4 unused GS when all the important techs were ready...

Well fun map anyway but a bit too easy

Map is not edited, I just put randomly generated map. When I played map myself I did not found eldorado before AI.

I decided to play this map for the first time today. Wow, things are going great. I'm going to have my research facilities by turn 180. I'm earning about 100 faith a turn, and have about 8 CS's. This may end up my fastest win yet. I chose to save at the point where CV and SV choices start to differ. I plan to play it for both outcomes. I also saved at the choice of Order vs Freedom for my science victory game.

The game took a few turns longer than it should have, as I was waiting 5 turns after having all the tech's ready to win. I guess I waited too long to bulb to Apollo, but it still was my fastest SV to date at t238. I lost a couple turns due to not having enough Aluminum too. I think next time I'll make sure to get recycle centers if I'm not going to have any aluminum. It didn't help that Rome DoW on me. I had to upgrade a bunch of units, so I couldn't buy a as many parts, but he was a joke when he came at me with musket men, while I had infantry.

I plan to go back for a crack at CV.

It seems my cultural victory needs work. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but I had much lower tourism than I'm used to. The game ended on turn 249.

Meanwhile, Moriarte would be my go to Deity let's player if I had to pick one. Especially if you're into learning deity Domination
Moriarte hasn't uploaded videos this entire year, unfortunately. Also, he makes heavy usage of Pledge to Protect + Consulates, and I started playing way after it was nerfed...

This map is so sweet for CV, though. Can't wait to try.

Decided to replay it while filming. Managed a T215 culture victory. I think I could have been faster, T205-210 by bombing sooner before internet. But I still wanted to reach internet for it to be more instructional.
I think you could have won even in under 200 turns. Also, if you do go to the Internet, you have to wait 8 turns to get the desired effect. Unlike great scientists or engineers, great musicians have a static tourism output -- which is what your civ had produced in the past 8 turns -- at the turn they are created. Rush-buying them right after the Internet gives no benefit. You probably know that, but I just wanted to be instructional. :p

t280 CV

Spoiler :

Decided to try what Acken did in the first 40mins of his videos and grab me the Parthenon and go for a CV. I must be playing a different game as it went to Rome on t74.
Not wanting to forward settle a ICSing France and a (normally) backstabbing Rome I decided on a 3 city Tradition affair. It was an uneventful affair with all the cultural wonders going in a Petra Moscow. There were only 2 DOWs, one from France early on but Yerevan saw to his unit spam and Rome late on(he was the cultural leader- well I was but he was second). I managed to take Rome and Cumae(with Prora) but he took them back easily so I settled for a reasonable peace deal. One frustrating thing was I caught no-one stealing techs so even though I entered the modern era on ~t160 when someone was still in the Medieval era.

I only made one mistake and was not watching my culture as I needed to pick a SP 1 turn from Acoustics, had I not detoured to Construction I would've opened Rationalism a lot earlier.

Had Rome not beaten me to Hagia Sophia (by 2 turns) I would've covered my continent in my religious spam and would've been influential over Rome earlier.

Not the best map but you get 2 great cities and your capital(with Petra) is a production powerhouse, I was able to build Statue of Liberty in 6 turns.

Acken is extremely efficient and opportunistic. His worker-stealing hurt Rome early, then he hit golden age exactly at HG/Petra/Parthenon time. When Caesar started running away with culture, he dow'ed him right after researching machinery and took Rome because it gave another food caravan to Moscow plus it could grow very rapidly and had jungle tiles, thus producing huge science output. When Egypt started running away, he bribed Napoleon to fight Ramses. Then he stole a bunch of natural heritage from Morocco, but they became friends (peculiar :crazyeye: ). Finally, he rushed Astronomy and Rationalism and bulbed GW to rush Secularism and solidify his lead, then he bulbed GS's at particular times to get through the tech tree in record times for a CV. There were other tricks like founding and selling cities because of luxuries that Moscow demanded or to bomb with musicians.

His strategies seem to consistently yield fast victories, and I think that's because of his early investment in workers and food trade routes for growth. He also has precise timing for policies when he pushes culture and for techs when he bulbs.

But I must say that the user interface enhancer is so helpful with that... I only learned about it from his videos, and it makes a huge impact because of how much information you get from it. It's simply amazing.
