British Airways flight A983 made a safe emergency landing at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam following a "specific threat" to the flight, BA has said.

The crew on the aircraft, which was carrying 118 passengers from Berlin to London, asked ground staff in the Netherlands for a military escort.

Whether hoaxes or not, there have been a few too many disruptions for my liking :(

According the Dutch press there was a bomb alarm.

I can understand the plane made an emergency landing, but can someone explain to me why it's necessary to escort this plane by 2 jets of the Royal Dutch Air Force. IMHO they can't do much when/if the bomb explodes.

(and yes I know the situation is different when the plane is hijacked. In that case I can understand such an escort).

A fighter can at least prevent a plane from flying into a building with lots of people in it.

The escort is meant to shoot down the plane if necessary to help people not on the plane. It isn't to help the people on the plane.

of the bomb is a threat to get the plain under control fo the hijackers (lets say they said they wante dto fly the plain intoa differnt country), but then proceed to try a "9/11", the fighter jets can obviouslly put a stop to that

Brave BA pilots, calling for fighters come and blow them out of the air. *sniff*

There's also the possibility that the fighters (or at any rate, an accompanying aircraft) can assist if the bomb goes off by either telling the BA pilots exactly what the damage is, or (if the BA plane blows apart or quickly crashes) noting where in the aircraft the bomb exploded so as to help the forensics and possibly help figure out who is responsible.
