Empire in Ashes

I am floored with astonishment of how damn good this is! Very, very well done. I was wondering though...could you maybe turn the Age of Iron into a downloadable scenario with the World Builder? Possibly turn the whole story into a playable scernario. I would LOVE to play this. Again good work, and keep it up! :)

I do not know how to make scenarios or mods...but...maybe someone who is a good modder...

Well, as for the war with France...

It was really a simple matter. Christianity found its way to France, and the French did not react well. Except in the southern French tribes, most French feared or detested Christianity. The French were either strongly religious pagans or atheists. Noticing the widespread acceptance of Christianity in the Southern Tribes, King Arius II ordered Christianity banned.

Protesting this order, several of the southern tribes rose up in rebellion. When the French army responded with several massacres in the year of 217, all members of a visiting Criscan delegation died in the chaos. Sadly, this delegation was led by Erai Seres Lian, the sister of the Criscan Emperor, Valdan I.

Struck by grief, the Emperor entered a month long coma. Desperate emissaries from the rest of the Christian French tribes arrived in Criscopolis and begged military aid from the Criscan Empire. Regent Nora Lian, the eldest daughter of the Emperor, sent troops to safeguard the tribes from attack, and an uneasy standoff between the French and the Criscans began.

When Emperor Valdan awoke, his rage was uncontrollable. He quickly broke the standoff and attacked the French in their border fortress, located in the village of Arc. Razing the fortress and village, the attack was led personally by Valdan, and he ensured the deaths of every single French soldier and villager in the Arc region.

Stunned by this wanton murder, Nora Lian betrayed her father and worked to force Crisca and France to work out a ceasefire. Valdan's rage was so furious that one could not be near him without succumbing to either fear...or succumbing to his anger. The still-legendary poet, Raskas Erei wrote of Valdan in his short poem, The Crimson Tide

A land of green and azure waters,
overrun by a crimson tide,
betrayed by its guardian, fallen in rage,
the benevolent monarch has succumbed to hate,
fields of blood will please Valdan's Eye.

It should be noted that that poem was the final work of Raskas before his execution a month later.

Valdan fought from 218 to 222 against his hated foes and tried without rest to find his daughter so she could be put to death for treason. The French captured her in Paris, however, and offered her to Valdan in exchange for a captured French general. Valdan instantly accepted, and ordered his daughter put to death on April 19th, 222 AD.

However, Papess Lessica I quickly traveled to Criscopolis and spent 4 hours in private counsel with Valdan. No one knows how, but the Pope did the impossible. On the hour of Nora's execution, he publicly exonerated her and restored her as Imperial heiress. In the greatest forgiveness in history, Valdan announced his intentions to end the war against France.

Three months later, Nora died in the initial outbreak of stolera. Valdan and his last remaining child, Ia Terra Lian, were overcome by sorrow. Ia bore her grief strongly, and did her best to help her broken father. Valdan, broken by grief over his sister and daughter, and wasted by anger, abdicated the throne to Ia, and left Criscopolis in secret to become a hermit and repent for his war crimes.

Ia did her best to stop the epidemic, but in the 3rd century, Criscan medicinal advances had not discovered bacteria, nor did they find a way to combat them. Of all those who contracted stolera, the only known case of survival was in Pope Lesiticus II, Papess Lessica I, and the other 6 pupils of Lesiticus who were infected in 224.

Ia succeeded in ending the inactive war in mid-228, but died the next year from stolera. Her father, still living as a wandering hermit who did his best to teach, heal, and help in the name of Christianity, returned to Criscopolis and prayed in the Basilica of the Golden Flame for four days without food or water. When a bishop entered his prayer chambers to try and convince him to drink or eat, he found that the former Emperor was dead. Valdan would be canonized as Saint Valdan the Forgiver.

The issue of religion, which had begun the war between France and Crisca, was solved within two centuries. In 453, King Clovis converted to Christianity after saying he would convert if he defeated the rebellious lords of Orleans at the Battle of Paris. When he succeeded, he was baptized along with his wife and son. Thus it was that Christianity (and Buddhism, it would overtake Christianity as the largest religion in France after the Interregnum) was introduced to France, and in one way Crisca took victory in its ancient war with France.

Interesting, though curious, I notice that these ryhmes, but assuming that its translated directly from Criscan, wouldn't it not ryhme? Meh. I'm confusing myself.

Nice update!

Skia Armas
The Skyfall

Skia Armas. A literal translation results in "The Sky Destroys". To those who speak English, it means "Skyfall."

In the year 2006, Crisca had collapsed. The Democratic Republic of Crisca never recovered from the blows that the Atheocracy and Christian Union of Crisca had done to the land. Crisca was no longer whole, Selia had become the Abrahamic Republic of Selias, the city of Terra had become a protectorate state, and Pisae had left Crisca when Crisca refused to declare war on Rome. In the northwest, Was Crisc and Indigo no longer sent their taxes to Criscopolis, and the once French cities had all declared independence as city states.

To make the situation worse, the entire world was on edge. The Empire of the Shining Blade (covering former Inca) was enroaching on Indian territory. The British and the Americans continued to have worsening relations with Mongolia, and the Memphis Republic had dissolved into the Socialist Confederation of Upper Egypt and the Free Republic of Lower Egypt. Criscan diplomats delicately negotiated with all parties, and hope for peace was beginning to surface.

However, on June 17th, 2010, a shower of meteroites struck Criscopolis. The entire city was destoryed, and 3 million of its 15 million people died. The Democratic Republic of Crisca seemed like it would collapse. It didn't. But negotiations did.

The Empire of the Shining Blade invaded the island republic of Japan, and razed the city of Bombay, India. According to Mongolian reports, the Americans attacked one of their outposts, but this was later revealled to be false. The Mongols invaded and destroyed San Diego, and the United Kingdom joined America in war with Mongolia. A week later, the Shining Blade Emperor allied Mongolia, and the Americans and Brits joined with India and Japan.

Somehow, Rome joined the Empire of the Shining Blade, possibly out of desire to crush Crisca, which had always overshadowed them, or possibly out of fear of invasion. Soon after the alliance, President Octavius Hadrian was murdered, and the Senate voted in Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, known as Caligula. But a week later, Pisae was attacked by Roman forces.

This spurred Crisca to unite. The capital was relocated from ruined Criscopolis to Sun Crisc. Pisae sent an application to rejoin Crisca, which was hastily approved. The Romans had to either withdraw or declare war on Crisca. They opted for war.

Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Jewish refugees from Rome told horrible stories of church destroying mobs, burning of religious books, and execution of clerics. Fearing the persecution of Caligula, the Selians rejoined Crisca as well. Was Crisc and Indigo once more sent taxes to the capital city.

Finally, the city states in former France voted to rejoin Crisca, but the government had a different venture in mind. Except for the border cities, the government ordered the city states to join with their ancient masters; the French. This drastically improved relations between France and Crisca, and an alliance was hammered out 3 months later. Terra ended its protectorate status and rejoined Crisc 3 years into the war.

Though Crisca and France would suffer massive damage, the Third World War would end in victory for the eventually allied forces of America, Japan, India, France, and Crisca. Truly, there were many causes, but historians now believe that Skia Armas, the night when Criscopolis was destroyed, was the final breakdown that led to World War Three. And it was World War Three that led to the unification of the world under the Gaia Republic in 2056.

Skia Armas is observed with feasting and prayer every June 17th. In the Skia Armas Day festival last year, the newly elected World President, Sein Lian, spent three hours laying down flowers for those who died on that terrible night.

That was quite interestinig. I like the change in direction here.. One question though. I'm not so sure how Skia Armas lead to the breakdown that caused World War III. It looks like The Empire of Shinging Blade's invasion of Japan and attacks on India had little to do with the death of five million people.

Maybe I'm missing something...

The Democratic Republic of Crisca had been leading the VERY delicate negotiations between the Empire of the Shining Blade and India, and Mongolia and the Brits/Americans. Most of the negotiation was done via private channels, as the leaders in Criscopolis feared that their abscence would allow dissidents to seize the city and nation.

When Criscopolis was destroyed, most of the government leaders died, and the DRC only survived thanks to a few officials who used the military to claim dictatioral powers until the government could be restored. With the DRC in chaos, negotiations collapsed, and the Empire of the Shining Blade saw its chance to take India without international backlash. Furthermore, the Mongolians and the Brits/Americans, who hated each other, simply pushed for war.

Yea, I need to learn to specify these things in the actual segment. ^_^

Thank you. ^_^

Right, I wonder if Minoan is still hanging around....

I have been...busy. That, and I fell asleep from 4PM to now. I had planned to update today. >_>

First, I will make a segment describing the dark age of Crisca; the Roshor Lian Dynasty.

Then, I will return to the narrative. During the narrative, there will be segments about other parts of Criscan history or culture.

Problem: I don't know when I can do these updates. I am off to bed now...but the weekend is coming up soon. I hope to make progress then. :)

I like the story, it seemes like an endless series of civil wars.

And the Byzantines, being as awesome as they were, were a whole lot more subtle about it, normally choosing assassanation, intriuge, exile and conspiracy to get the job done. XD

Anyway, I eagerly await the next update ^_^

The Roshor-Lian Dynasty: 239 AD-779 AD

Soran Teras Lian won the 10 year long Succession and exiled his brother to the lands of the Romans. He named himself Emperor Soran VI and declared the birth of the Third Lian Dynasty. 3 years after his ascension, his wife, Riia Hesi Lian (maiden name: Resta) died from the last, final burst of stolera. In grief, he married Rassa Roshor, who manipulated her grieving husband and ran the Empire until her death in 254. The Roshor family gained power and influence in the Empire throughout the dynasty. For this reason, the Third Lian Dynasty is usually called the Roshor-Lian Dynasty.

This dynasty was a dark era. The Emperei Cissia, the great mass of officials, surveyors, and nobles who supported the Empire, became irreversibly corrupt. The Imperial Treasury was in constant danger of bankruptcy for most of the dynasty, where it had once needed 10 storehouses in every major city to hold. The Emperors at first tried to rectify the growing problems, but failed. Their defeats in many conflicts like this weakened their power, and the first Cynical Emperor, Nihilis Lian, lived a life of pleasure and ignoring his duties, not out of natural decadence, but out of simple surrender to the impossibility of changing the situation. Almost all rulers who followed him let the corrupt run the empire.

In 442, the Empire suffered a brief, week long civil war between the Imperial Army and the Army of the Yellow Disc, a coalition of nobles. The battle was pure carnage and raged for a week, but the nobles won and occupied the capital. They demanded increased freedoms, and the Emperor granted them. They then began to form firisa, "nations within a nation". These firisa were very similar to feudal fiefdoms in other nations, but many feudal lords claimed the title of "King" and ran their provinces totally independently. For example. one firisa had its own ceremonies that differed from Imperial ones, had Judaism as its state religion, while Christianity was the state religion of the Empire, had its own money, trading rights and relations, was at war with other firisa, and had a King. The only tenuous control the Empire had over firisa was a 5% tax on their incomes, and yearly ceremonies where the fuedal lords kissed the ring of the Emperor or Empress.

This was the Feudal Age of Crisca, where the Empire was but an afterthought. Many who only wanted stability and peace could not serve the Empire as they did not believe it could succeed. Too many believed the only way to unify Crisca was by bringing a firisa to conquer all the others, and then dispose of the weak Roshor-Lian Emperors. War was ever constant, and scientific, religious, and intellecutal pursuits were sacrificed in the name of war. Only a few firisa did their best to maintain tradition, knowledge, or the will to progress.

This all changed with the advent of 8th century. In 702, Emperor Jastin took the Throne when his mother was murdered, and secretly built an army of assassins and sabateurs. He intended to put the lords against each other, and bring the loyal firisa to dominate the poli-scape.

His first strike was against the fiefdoms of Lady Corellia of the Dystan farisa which ruled the area around Dystopolis. The assassins murdered many of her officials, causing chaos. When the Budget was due, she could not produce it and asked for more time. The Emperor did not have mercy, as he knew Corellia had been responsible for his mother's death. (His belief that Lady Corellia was responsible was proven thrice, once in 754, again in 1242, and finally in 1933.) Corellia was put to death, and her territories went into "Imperial protection". Within a year, Dystopolis was an Imperial stronghold.

The three most powerful lords at this time were Lord Darisdarin of Alaren (large, western farisa that was due west of Criscopolis), Lady Rae of Abregado (Region surrounding Terra, she controlled the city of Terra as well), and Lord Saracas of Sundeas (the area surrounding Sun Crisc). Lady Rae was a close ally of Emperor Jastin.

Jastin and Rae conspired to throw down the Feudal Lords in a brilliant manner. They agreed that Rae would be given the position of Imperial Seer (top advisor), which she would have had long ago if the other Lords refused to allow it (the Emperor would not dare appoint a person to that position if the feudal lords said no, the current Seer was an idiot). Jastin sent Imperial troops ,that were disguised as soldiers under Lord Saracas, to attack a fort of Darisdarin. The battle did not last long, and the disguised Imperial troops razed the fort, which controlled the trade route from Was Crisc to Criscopolis. Darisdarin sent a response to the unawares Saracas, and captured the town of Rese, which was northwest of Sun Crisc. Saracas, shocked, responded with war.

While the war raged, Rae built up her forces, and sent them across the territory of Saracas, who let them pass through. Rae's forces occupied several fiercely independent firisa, and cast their lord's out. She announced a week later that she could not maintain the provinces and gave them into "Imperial protection". The territories the Imperial government gained included Ean Crisc. By this time, it was 708 AD.

Jastin attacked and captured, directly, a small force of troops sent by Darisdarin to act as a garisson force in occupied lands. Jastin then sent forged documents back to Darisdarin that told of the "arrival" of the troops at their destination. This tricked Darisdarin into thinking his small force had arrived and that all was well. Jastin dressed his prisoners up as Imperial soldiers, had a makeshift camp constructed, and disguised his soldiers as some of Darisdarin's men. He then "attacked" the camp filled with "sleepy, unarmed Imperial troops".

Using this "justification", he declared war on Darisdarin and by 209, the weakened lord was dead, and the Imperial governemnt had his lands. At the Imperial Council in Criscopolis that year, in August, Rae framed Saracas for treason and had him tried and executed. He had no heirs, he was only 26. Thus it was that almost all the old firisa were returned to Imperial control. Rae was granted her wish and became a very successful Imperial Seer.

For the next 70 years, the new Roshor-Lian dynasty worked to restore Crisca to its old glory. They even were considering making a bid to reclaim lands lost to France long ago (Imperial decadence + feudal lords + decades of enroachment= lost territory. Lots of it). But in the 770s, a great disaster struck Crisca once more...
