People are happier in Despotism than in Democracy?

Hi.

Well, not only Despotism, but Communism and Monarchy e.g. as well?

Republic has ZERO military police - as does Democracy.

So if the number of luxes is equal, and we do not take economic (more money, faster research) factors in account:

From an happiness point of view, Republic needs to use the lux slider to get the same results as Monarchy with 2 units of Military police.

Is this correct or is there some intrinsic happiness bonus to a government?

Because I come to the conclusion, people are happier in despotism than in Democracy... wait! less food -> no WLTKD.

But besides that - can one say this is correct? Must superior economy compensate Republic's deficit in happiness compared to Monarchy e.g.?

The extra income in Republic and Democracy more than offset the MP effects of MP governments.

Yep, Tomoyo is right: because of the more commerce in Republic, if you set the Luxury slider up 10%, you'll get more results (more happy faces) because there is more gold.

Example: if you have 10 commerce producing shields producing 1 commerce each. In Monarchy, you'll get 1 happy face if the slider is at 10%. But, in Republic, you'll get a bonus on each tile producing at least 1 commerce, so you'll get 20 commerce. If the slider is at 10%, you get 2 happy faces. So the more roads = more gold = more happy faces. :)

Also, luxuries and marketplaces do wonders in Republic.

Note: You can exchange the word 'democracy' whenever I have said Republic in this post.

If you rely on military police (and improvements) to keep your people happy, then, yes, the government allowing the greatest level of police will make more people happier. This is known as a tautology.

It's quite realistic.

Under democracy, everyone is spoiled and needs babysitting. So you pay a lux tax and you get happiness, otherwise be unhappy and turn the city into disorder.

Under despotism, you do not have the freedom to express that you are unhappy. Policemen repel uprises. So you seem to be happy and poor.

Are you at war a lot? Republic/Democracy/Fuedalism all have war-wariness. The longer you're at war, the greater effect it has.

Hello.

Please let me make clear that I am not talking about real world forms of governments. This was about Civ3.

Tomoyo and Ginger have a point, your lux slider easily offsets the need for military police, you have your troops only where you need them and thus less but more efficient ones.

I had the problem that I have used many troops in despotism to keep my citizens happy (Sumeria, Demigod). So I can now not really switch to Republic, because I would need a bit more luxes and cannot raise my science slider due to HIGH unit support costs.

But I expect my cities to grow to size 6 soon, and 1/3/4 in Republic is close to 2/4/8.

Between 3 and 4 for size 6-12 cities is not really that much of a difference, and 2 upkeep instead of 1 above the unit limit is not really a problem either for me.

But I would prefer Republic due to reasons mentioned above - but having another 4-6 turn Anarchy period is not really what I want! :(

I think I should go for war.

If you want to see a happiness / productiviness comparison between Monarchy and Republic, see these 3 savegames:

1 turn before the end of Anarchy, Monarchy + Republic in one save.

Enjoy!
