A World At War: Chronicles of the Philosopher Kings V

A most intriguing story. Looking forward to updates...

Helmling: definitely one of the better stories I've read! Very interesting writing style & I appreciate the screenshots. Looking forward to see the Persians wiped off the map!

Edit: a couple of questions, however.

Why did you build the Colossus so early instead of focusing on expansion?
I saw that you had built the Great Library and you mentioned the Mausoleum. Do you mean the Mausoleum of Mausollos? If so, I'm rather surprised. Even using a Scientific Leader to rush, I'm seldom able to build even 2 Ancient Age Great Wonders.

hi
my first post in the Stories & Tales section, usually I'm just lurking. But your story is really very interesting and original. Hope to learn more about the Greek origins soon.

As you can see, my city names are not standard. Claudia is my wife, Alyssa my daughter, Atticus my son and Jenn is my best friend from high school and college who passed away a few years ago. These cities, then, become extremely important to me

ahhh...it all makes sense now...

Hope you feel better soon.

BTW...what do you do for a living(just out curiosity...I started a thread poll a few months ago about vocations) ?

Excellent ending! Great story! :goodjob:

Do you teach Literature? A natural question considering your writing ability.

great story. the suspence in the beginning of the last war is very well done. I had a really good time reading it.

perhaps I would have appreciated if there were more battle reports by officers during the Persian war, to better understand why the great Xerxes was so easily beaten.

but well, it's already very good.
:goodjob:

Helmling: I read some of the stories on your website. Superb writing!
But some of the fiction was OH MY GOD depressing!! ;) :joke:

Of course, I'm a terrible critic...give me a sappy love story with a "happily ever after" and I'll give it 2 thumbs up, 5 stars!

Seriously...have you been published? There was a LOT of very good material...

Here's looking forward to future stories...

Absolutely superb. If your teaching is half as good you have some very fortunate students.

Absolute Sad:
Thanks, but yeah, I had originally intended to stretch out the Persian war a bit, but I had to go back to work and I figured I'd rather finish it than have to leave it hanging until I don't know when. Also, I was afraid it would be anticlimactic anyway. It was sure surprising how easily Persia folded. Of course, I'd been waiting for them to provoke me. I had four armies ready to load tanks into and most of my big cities had built all their improvements and were just pumping out tanks for 20 turns. I knew the war was mine when I was able to wipe out most of their 50+ unit invasion force in one turn, but I still expected more resistance after that. Go figure. And it wasn't really that easy to beat Xerxes, i had to swallow my pride three different times and give in to his demands. Oh, how I hate that, but I just wasn't ready to fight him because I wanted that war to be the last war I'd have to fight with Persia.

Mr. Hyperbole:
Thanks, and yeah, I've heard that a lot about my other stuff. It's funny because I'm a cut-up in person but for some reason, zero humor turns up in the stuff I write. Go figure. No, not published yet, I try with every book, but publishing's a pain in the backside to break into.
This was fun and good practice, but I'm sorry to say this if probably my last Civ story. I've done it a few times before, but each time I got into it a little deeper. Any deeper than this one and it will be a full-out novel.
And that would just eat into my playing Civ time...

Thanks again.

Ravers:
That's very nice of you to say...hmmm, I wonder what my students would say to that...I know I've taught many of them how to be better Civ players, there's several who are on my computer at lunch every day.

Thanks, and glad you liked the story.

I understand. I'm a real smart-ass(see sig) but nearly every fictional story I wrote for English or Lit ended tragically for the main characters; I was always emotionally distant from them.
Conversely, I am a very empathetic reader(and viewer); I'm happy as long as the protagonist gets the boy/girl and they live happily ever after.
:mischief: but the really powerful stories are those in which a major player dies(a la "Moulon Rouge", too many Poe stories and that movie where Johnie Depp was chasing Jack the Ripper).
I hope that someday you do get published. I found the stories REALLY good...

Mr. Hyperbole:

Thanks, I do too. Hope springe eternal.

You know, I'm trying to think of a happy ending I've written...hmmm...can't. I liked From Hell also, even though it takes some serious liberties with the history of Jack the Ripper.
