Some of you may recognise this game from another thread (look for the Korean capital ;) )

Anyway, it keeps crashing when it tries to start the Spaceship Launch movie! This is my personal best date for a launch and I'd really rather like to get it registered.

If someone could check it out... press space, go to the Big Picture, F1 from the Science Advisor, switch the Palace in Chalcedon to the last SS part, continue on, build what you like...

For me, it crashed trying to run the movie :( I've tried several times.

Then don't launch the movie! Not all computers are created equal!;) May be your system isn't 100% compatible for launching a spaceship. I'm just guessing....since I don't have Civ3 with me at the moment.

You have no choice but to launch the movie, afaik... and it's not like the game hasn't played the launch movie before on this machine (more times than I could count even).

IIRC, if you hit ESC immediately at the launch screen, it will skip the movie. Anyway, I would recommend a virus check on your system. It seem to me that your P4 2.4GHz machine is currently running much lower than its potential speed. Again, I'm guessing based on the information you have told me so far on the MapFinder thread. IMO, your system performance seems very slow for a P4 2.4 GHz machine with 1G of RAM.

It happened to me too. Here's what I did:

1. Go to Art/Movies
2. Make a back-up of race.bik (optional)
3. Delete race.bik
4. Make a copy if intro.bik and rename in race.bik

Now, when you build the ship, the opening movie will show, but the game won't crash.

I've tried a couple of other C3C space wins I've got saved: Jumpasters1C, COTM7, and a Sumerian HoF game.

The former two - both on starndard/large worlds at Emperor - crash when trying to start the space movie.

The latter, on a tiny world at Chieftan - doesn't.

Let me know if you want the save to run viewer against. I did nothing but space bar all the build, I think. No effort to accomplish anything.

Sound like your system can't launch spaceship movie on a standard or bigger map. That isn't normal for a P4 2.4GHz. Btw, is there any reason why you are still using XP-SP1 instead of XP-SP2?

None other than I don't trust it yet ;) We haven't gone to it at work yet, so I see no reason at home.

Are your virus definition updated (because if it's not the latest, it may not be able to detech all the lastest problem)? Btw, I has been using WinXP Pro SP2 for a long time now - no problem whatsoever.

Virus definitions afre up-to-date, that's what 3am civ-playing sessions get you - you know what your virus scanner gets up to on its nightly scan...

I just checked your game on my system. Your spaceship launched just fine without any problem whatsoever.

I've just re-installed Civ, dumped a load on unwanted stuff from my HD, and generally tidied up my system. Benchmarks all look fine - about 1/3 faster than a 1.8Ghz P4 which is what I'd expect, and the RAM is faster than any of the benchmarks, again, I'd expect that.

HD access is slower, but it's a bigger drive.

eldar, I am running SP2 on XP PRO and have since it came out. So it is not SP2 that is having a problem, maybe spyware.

I use a firewall, Lavasofts spyware tool, Norton antivirsu and Spyware Blaster.

I just updated to SP2. I also ran SpyBot as well, and there's nothing going on that it can detect. I think it's a DirectX (9.0c) and/or memory-related problem, but I can't prove it. If there's less on the map, it works (I set up a scenario to win with a single city and only one opponent - that was a standard map and it was fine, I also now have a 3950BC Spaceship win... )

I can also confirm that re-naming the movie doesn't work, nor has updating the drivers for playing it. The viewer I got with the drivers allows me to watch the SS movie fine.

try to use this : http://www.memtest86.com/
to test your memory for faults..
you need to create either a cdrom or a floppy and boot from to run the tests
(for floppy unzip the 'Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.1a installable from Windows and DOS' and run install with a blank floppy in the drive , for cdrom burn the iso image)
