Two changes have been made to the Gauntlet challenge. First, we're no longer doing "live time" updates in regards to leaders. Second, settings are now chosen by the staff.

And without further adieu, your second Major Gauntlet:
Victory: Diplomatic
Difficulty: Demigod*
Mapsize: Huge

Have at it. :)

*NonC3C users should play on Deity

Interesting combination. The Sumerians, Greeks, Koreans, and Russians would all be serious contenders. Honorable mention to pre-C3C Ottomans and Persians.

My vote goes to Russia though. :D

I think I'll go with Sumeria. Quick expansion is very important.

But I'm wondering about the number of opponents. Max, or just scientific ones?

I've generated a few Pangea maps with my favourite civ for Diplo games at this level: Russia. All other scientifics are in the game except Babylon-if I can somehow get an SGL for CB, the game is going to be a lot easier but I think that a decent area of land for the core is more important than an early SGL. I then added France and Carthage (for additional chances for early Alphabet trading) to make the number of civs up to the minimum 8.

Huge map will be a new experience though as I usually play standard and I imagine that the initial tech pace will be very slow until contacts are made so I'm hoping for some good fortune with huts. :)

Now all I need is a decent block of free time to play one of them and find out what's wrong with this set up. ;)

Looks like I'm first to declare with a 990AD win.

I had a previous go before this which started well but I lost out on the Republic slingshot to France. However the killer blow to that game was when I was sneak attacked by France at the the start of a seven turn anarchy. I had no military to fight back with and they had taken one of my only two luxes. This was a shame as I'd got an early SGL for Writing and built the Pyramids.

Whilst playing I noticed that I hadn't included the Germans in my first maps so I rolled some more and played with all scientific civs except Babs and added carthage to make up the numbers.

This was the start: I moved off the cow (SW) and looked to get a number of scouts out early then set up a settler factory.

I didn't play too well early on. I popped Philosophy whilst researching CoL and so missed out on the Rep Slingshot. I didn't get to Rep until 750BC. However I did manage to meet all civs reasonably early and I could get all first tier techs for each new age by trading via the big picture.

I entered the MA in 470BC and the IA in 410AD. Slower than I'm used to when playing this type of game on standard maps.

All was peaceful until just after my GA was triggered after Copers and Newton builds. Carthage sneak attacked me and caused some real damage. WW kicked in and slowed my research during the early phase of the IA. Carthage was finally KO'd in 800AD.

I finally got my first SGL for Sci Method and held it back for the UN, which I rushed in 980. I then bought MPPs with all but the Ottomans (the second placed civ for population after me) and wound them up to declare on me. They attacked inter-turn and I won the vote 7-1.

990 7-1 vote for me!

This should be beaten. Researching Republic lost me a lot of turns and if I'd been lucky to get the chance of rushing Pyramids I would probably have had more four-turn research projects.

I'm looking forward to seeing the bar raised. ;)

You got 8 techs from huts

I finally decided in favor of Russia too, but only popped 3 techs, none of them was Alpha/Writing/Philo/CoL. I entered MA around 700BC, but without Rep. I'll soo how it goes.

Yes, but I could have done without popping Phil whilst researching CoL! It's always risky poping huts when Phil is available. I took a chance and lost. :(

I got 7 scouts out early on with the intention of getting to as many of the huts as possible before the AI got to them. Some of the techs that I popped were available in deals so it really just saved me some cash so if I'm being fussy I would have prefered some of the techs later on:). I was holding back on some trades hoping for more early contacts but that didn't pay off either. I try for a reasonably large number of scouts as it can lead to a very strong position in the early game. I certainly would have traded a couple of those hut techs for an early SGL. The Pyramids are just so powerful!
