Screenshots. Most of the citizens respond very positively to pictures.
Would you consider dedicating a thread and a cartographer to manage our pictures?
Absolutely - it seems like a good idea. Frankly, I think that imageshack etc. instructions should be in the FAQ.

Would you require the DP's to post screenies?
I don't see how the president can really require it, but I'd certainly encourage the DPs to inform the people as much as possible.

What is your view of the Oracle sling?
I think it became impossible the moment we chose to research Alphabet. This development makes it even more crucial that we expand beyond our chokepoint rather than behind it. More on that next question.

In 400 years where do you see our country?
Personally, I'd like to encourage people to consider expanding south and east of the present chokepoint. We already have a lock on our peninsula until and unless a nearby nation like the Mongols declares war - which I have a hard time seeing them winning given our present resource situation. What we need is to expand to the south and east
beyond those given borders in order to make certain that we have multiple borders with multiple nations and that we have luxury resources that will syngergize with buildings beyond cathedrals. Honestly - if we're spending lots of money on cathedrals, we're not going to need incense happiness bonuses, because we'll we flipping the culture switch.
To answer your question about my plans to organize the game, I'll first go into my background and why I think I'd be good for the position of president. I'm a long-time chess player, and I got into SMAC a couple of years after it was released. That led me to Civ3 and eventually Civ4. I really like the idea of the DG because it reminds me of the "republic of chess" variant we had in my favorite chess zine, basically two teams played by mail, one week to propose moves, one week to vote on moves. It was a
blast, and unfortunately only ended when the zine's publisher had to stop the zine. I also was a senior officer of a live-action roleplaying game for a period of about three years; the similarities between the DG and LARPing are striking. I do have a certain amount of experience at this - but in those different formats.
It seems to me that the DG has two real purposes. The first is for all of us to improve at our hobby. I have to say that just the debates over city placement and technology have taken me up a difficulty level, and that's very satisfying for me. But what role does the president have in this aspect of the game? Certainly, she or he is "our fearless leader," and the nominal head of state, and has all executive powers not vested in other cabinet members and the triumvirate. More to the point, the president is the most visible officer of the government, and is tasked with resolving disputes between officers. What I interpret this to mean is that the president should be the advocate of minority positions, if they are strategically viable, and should be active in matching citizen concerns with the appropriate officers. It's difficult to make concrete promises about this level of involvement that are particular to the office of president, since so much of our individual desires in the game could be solved by any group of people working together. Nevertheless, I will promote a few measures which will meet the objective of improving our hobby:
1. Work with the censor to find ways to keep citizens apprised of current polls. It's too difficult right now to tell what's being voted on, why, and where it was debated.
2. Solicit a consensus solution addressing how to make the game easier to enter for new players. This is a hobby improvement issue because it's been noted multiple times that the DG is hard to enter. The more quickly accessible, discussion and participation are, the more mature our collective strategy.
3. Organize a direct liaison between the other forums and the DG. GOTM is gigantic - it's amazing the number of strategy article posters that have, mysteriously, been playing monarch inland sea games as Tokugawa. Why can't we do this also? I don't see why this should be or, really, how it could be the job of a single "person of action."
The second purpose, and more difficult, is to give us a social forum and context for the game. This is even more difficult for the president to do anything about quantitatively, but I really suggest that we establish netiquette/ethics guidelines for discussions. What really suffers in forum discussions, I feel, is the assumption of good faith on the part of those advocating other positions. I feel like establishing standards for how the community interacts with new players and seasoned veterans alike would really change the character of the game for those who play - encouraging them to bring in their contacts in the forum.
It would appear the election has started before I formulated my response to these questions - and that the vote has started to go the direction of my opponent. Nevertheless, I intend to continue to campaign over the next few days, and encourage citizens to vote.
