This is the Thread for Term three president Nominations:goodjob:

I nominate DS for Prez

Sigma's perfectly capable of handling the Science Ministry, and I sure as hell don't want to become a member of the Judiciary again :shiver:. I've had enough of law-making bullcrap to last me my lifetime.

I'll challange Daveshack on this one, count me in.

I'll decline this nomination for the governor position. Thanks though

I accept the nomination. I will post a campaign platform shortly.

To my opponents: may the best man/woman win for the glory of Licentia.

Citizens of Licentia,

Today I present to you my vision for a prosperous and strong civilization. A great man of our people once said that any leader, especially the President, should not be primarily a decision maker. Decisions must be made at this level and I cannot shirk that responsibility, but as head of state my principal task will be that of motivator, enabler and mediator for citizen involvement. While we are not a monarchy, the best executives take cues from that form of government - that a head of state is ultimately accessible to any citizen with a greivance or new idea. Law exists that the strong may not have power over the weak.

Having made our first new settlements, we must begin to consider much more strategic choices - in our forces' movements and in our cities' production, in our wise-men's prophetic visions and in our choices in governing our people.

There is still relatively little of new interest on our horizons, but difficult choices lie ahead. An aggressive potential enemy lies to our south, and we must begin to consider the rising rage of uncivilized people towards our utilization of the land. My office will push for healthy, reasoned buildup of a larger military based on Axemen and mounted units.

We still lack direction and declarations for specialization. Under my leadership, the Presidency will push constantly for analysis of the underlying strengths of existing and new cities, and work with governors in order to develop a productive identity for each city individually. While Licentia may now be a nation in name, it will not be a nation in fact until it develops the combination of geographical understanding and informed choices that will make our people most happy, numerous, and productive. Any other course of action delays the building of national work ethics and infrastructure essential for the greatness of any civilization.

Under my leadership, the office of the President will continue to promote independent citizen-based news reporting as well as government publications from the Intelligence Directorate. I will personally present proposals for the specialization of cities based on the information we have.

I may not have experience comparable to some of the old hands present here, but those familiar with my posts know that I am organized, efficient, and respectful even to those with whom I disagree. The personal strengths I bring to this office include my organization and clarity in speaking, my strong commitment to geographical and economic-based strategic thought, and my deep faith in democracy and consensus. I intend in my office to advocate, in our democracy, the strongest strategies possible - and the weakest voices possible. It is only through the union of pragmatic planning, and insight, with fun participation for all, that we will become a nation of the fortunate and a nation of the wise.

With respect and thanks,

Chillaxation,
Citizen of Licentia.

I second Strider.

Platform, I don't really have a platform per say. The in-game strategies and decisions I haven't really given any forward thought. The only thing I can promise is that I'll do what the situtation or citizens demand. In this case, I'm open and flexible.

However, I do have many, many goals. Not goals for the nation known as Licentia, but goals for the democracy game as a whole.

Our partcipation is medicore, it's not awful, but it's not as good as it can be. That is one thing I plan on changing. Regardless of wether I'm elected or not, I'm going to start writing stories, reports, etc. (pending mod/admin approval) to advertise the Civ IV demogame. These will hopefully be posted on the CivFanatics Main Page, and will vary greatly. I already sent in one to Chieftess, which is more of a story (which tells of our starting location). Others may range from basic newspaper type reports to real debates/decisions.

Yet, how many people do we lose just because there is no easy way to find out what the hell the game is? The democracy game can seem vast and complex to someone who hasn't played it before. As president, I would use the extra influence to expand on our FAQ, Help Threads, Information Department, etc. If we want people to join the game, were going to have to make it easier to find out how the game operates, and what it is.

However, our goal is not only to gain people, but to keep them. With that in mind, I'm currently attempting to restructure the hugely popular RPG. With some luck (and help!) I'll be able to make it somewhat less popular than it was in olden days, but enough that it attracts even more interest to the game. I currently have most of the ruleset written up, I just need to finish the merit/flaws descriptions, and then we will be ready to roll.

Of course, there is a hell of alot more to do than just trying to increase partcipation and interest. Take a quick guess as to how many sticky threads are in the main DG forum? It rhymes with 13. Now, how many sticky threads are in the 4 demogame sub-forums combined? Four, yep, only four. Someone please explain to me how the hell your suppose to find anything in that mess? We've lost our basic level of organization, and 5 of those 13 threads can be moved to one of the other subforums, and 2 can be removed completely. I don't really want to ask the mods to move everything around without consulting everyone first though, which is one of the things I want to propose after the elections.

As president, I promise to coordinate the efforts of all the elected officials. I will attempt to actually create a government that works together to form one strategy. Of course, I plan on focusing slightly on science research, but what would you expect from someone coming out of the Science Ministry?

As for the city placement, I propose "mostly" the following:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads11/City-Plan.gif

It needs some revisions, two of the cities I would like to move by one tile, but this should be enough to give you a general idea of what I'm thinking.

I must decline the nomination. The upcoming month looks to be my worst ever for RL workload, and I can't do the office justice in this environment.

It's kind of a bummer, as I'm sure it would have been a spirited campaign.

Part of me says to support Strider. Some of the observations in his platform are right on target, but it's distressing to see someone with those types of ideas failing to act on them prior to being elected, since the actions don't require the office to be effective. Granted, the RPG restart is a work in progress and the attempt to shoot down political parties was a good effort (though misguided IMHO), but the FAQ type stuff is a task that anyone can do at any time, and there has been an open invitation on the table to go ahead and just do it for a year now... But my mind isn't made up, and actions to back up words would easily sway me at this time.

Part of me says to support Chillaxation, new blood is another of the things we've needed for a while. However, it's hard to jump on the bandwagon for someone who hasn't shown sustained performance, or better put it's easier to support someone who does have a record.

Bottom line for the candidates is, show me what you've got because I'm still undecided.

It's already a work in progress also:

Part of the reason I want to get rid of some of the stickies on the main page, you can't see anything there unless your looking for it.

I have a lot of questions for our two candidates. Is this the thread for questions or should I place them in the poll thread when it's available?

Post 'em here!

OK a few things....

Screenshots. Most of the citizens respond very positively to pictures.
Would you consider dedicating a thread and a cartographer to manage our pictures?
Would you require the DP's to post screenies?
What is your view of the Oracle sling?
In 400 years where do you see our country?

@Chill--Strider has explained his very solid organization strategy. @Chill what would you suggest in this area?
@Strider-- Chill has shown a very good handle on the mechanics of the game. Do you feel this is important for our president and how would you assess your skills.

That's all for now. I'll likely be back with more.

We already have a thread dedicated to screenshots here. It's one of those 13 stickied threads in the main forum I was complaining about. If I had my way, it would be moved to the citizens forum.

As for requiring DP's to post screenshots, I would have to ask the DP's. I have only been the designated player for a turnchat once, yes, only once. I have very little knowaledge of how hard it is. I say we leave the decision up to the people who constantly play turnchats.

A cartographer? We've had some in the past, actually most of the cartographers in the past have become pretty important members of the demogame. It's not something I would actively push to fill, but if someone wants the title and duties, I'll appoint them.

If it works, great, if it doesn't... it was a good shot anyway.

I plan on being dead in 400 years, that or very old and playing Civilization XX.

Seriously, I'm hoping to have out little peninsula settled, and hopefully acouple of cities along the sea to the south of our capital. If I'm translating the Civ 4 turns/years correctly, we might be at war with our neighbor at about that time.

Most of the presidents duties are not dealing with in-game matters. The only three I can think of off the top of my head is the slider settings, city placement, and the budget.

I've already proven I'm capable of handling city placement adequetly, and the slider isn't really that difficult :). Mostly, I want to focus on research. I'll even run us into the negative gpt if it won't bankrupt us, and if it will get a technology completed sooner. At this stage of the game, were going to have to out-pace the AI's. As for the budget, I'll just take it on a case-by-case basis. It's impossible to predict what the circumstances will be, but being flexible about it would be best. So I will make no promises budget wise.

Other than those three matters, most of it is coordinating the efforts between officials, the Triumvirate duties, and making sure key decisions are made by the citizens.

Absolutely - it seems like a good idea. Frankly, I think that imageshack etc. instructions should be in the FAQ.

Whomp said:

I don't see how the president can really require it, but I'd certainly encourage the DPs to inform the people as much as possible.

I think it became impossible the moment we chose to research Alphabet. This development makes it even more crucial that we expand beyond our chokepoint rather than behind it. More on that next question.

Whomp said:

Personally, I'd like to encourage people to consider expanding south and east of the present chokepoint. We already have a lock on our peninsula until and unless a nearby nation like the Mongols declares war - which I have a hard time seeing them winning given our present resource situation. What we need is to expand to the south and east beyond those given borders in order to make certain that we have multiple borders with multiple nations and that we have luxury resources that will syngergize with buildings beyond cathedrals. Honestly - if we're spending lots of money on cathedrals, we're not going to need incense happiness bonuses, because we'll we flipping the culture switch.

To answer your question about my plans to organize the game, I'll first go into my background and why I think I'd be good for the position of president. I'm a long-time chess player, and I got into SMAC a couple of years after it was released. That led me to Civ3 and eventually Civ4. I really like the idea of the DG because it reminds me of the "republic of chess" variant we had in my favorite chess zine, basically two teams played by mail, one week to propose moves, one week to vote on moves. It was a
blast, and unfortunately only ended when the zine's publisher had to stop the zine. I also was a senior officer of a live-action roleplaying game for a period of about three years; the similarities between the DG and LARPing are striking. I do have a certain amount of experience at this - but in those different formats.

It seems to me that the DG has two real purposes. The first is for all of us to improve at our hobby. I have to say that just the debates over city placement and technology have taken me up a difficulty level, and that's very satisfying for me. But what role does the president have in this aspect of the game? Certainly, she or he is "our fearless leader," and the nominal head of state, and has all executive powers not vested in other cabinet members and the triumvirate. More to the point, the president is the most visible officer of the government, and is tasked with resolving disputes between officers. What I interpret this to mean is that the president should be the advocate of minority positions, if they are strategically viable, and should be active in matching citizen concerns with the appropriate officers. It's difficult to make concrete promises about this level of involvement that are particular to the office of president, since so much of our individual desires in the game could be solved by any group of people working together. Nevertheless, I will promote a few measures which will meet the objective of improving our hobby:

1. Work with the censor to find ways to keep citizens apprised of current polls. It's too difficult right now to tell what's being voted on, why, and where it was debated.

2. Solicit a consensus solution addressing how to make the game easier to enter for new players. This is a hobby improvement issue because it's been noted multiple times that the DG is hard to enter. The more quickly accessible, discussion and participation are, the more mature our collective strategy.

3. Organize a direct liaison between the other forums and the DG. GOTM is gigantic - it's amazing the number of strategy article posters that have, mysteriously, been playing monarch inland sea games as Tokugawa. Why can't we do this also? I don't see why this should be or, really, how it could be the job of a single "person of action."

The second purpose, and more difficult, is to give us a social forum and context for the game. This is even more difficult for the president to do anything about quantitatively, but I really suggest that we establish netiquette/ethics guidelines for discussions. What really suffers in forum discussions, I feel, is the assumption of good faith on the part of those advocating other positions. I feel like establishing standards for how the community interacts with new players and seasoned veterans alike would really change the character of the game for those who play - encouraging them to bring in their contacts in the forum.

It would appear the election has started before I formulated my response to these questions - and that the vote has started to go the direction of my opponent. Nevertheless, I intend to continue to campaign over the next few days, and encourage citizens to vote.
