In other words, Xena has been renamed.

:(

Now I don't get to yell "Ei Ei Ei Ei Ei Eieeeee" when talking about astronomy.

The christening of Eris, named after the Greek goddess of chaos and strife, was announced by the International Astronomical Union on Wednesday. Weeks earlier, the professional astronomers' group stripped Pluto of its planethood under new controversial guidelines.
...
After much bickering, astronomers last month voted to shrink the solar system to eight planets, downgrading Pluto to a "dwarf planet," a category that also includes Eris and the asteroid Ceres.

Of course, after all the Chaos it caused, the name makes sense

How disappointing...

First Pluto

Now Xena.

Next they'll tell us Sol isn't a star after all...

It is indeed. I noticed that. I'm certain it has to be intentional.

Xena was never it's 'official' name, it was the name given to it by the guy who discovered it.

well I did read once that only 55% of Americans think that the Sun is a star so........

Isn't Eris the goddess of Discordianism?

Named for the older Greek goddess, yes. Eris was the one with the golden apple who started the Trojan War. (She caused Athena, Hera and Aphrodite to compete to win the golden apple from Paris.)

Xena/Eris was never labelled a planet, it was just that its discovery helped open up the debate over just what should qualify as a 'planet', which resulted in Pluto's little class change. (Why people keep insisting on viewing this change of label as negative is beyond me...)

Normally I would say yes, it is stupid and no one could possibly think that but I've heard that stat many many times so I dunno....

Well please show me a link because that sounds retarted.

That would mean ALMOST every 1 in 2 americans thinks its not a star.

That smells like rancid **** if you ask me...

Perhaps it should be reverted back to being labelled a planet, you know, for "Historical reasons" ;)

It's a matter of knowing the question which provoked the answer.

I believe this statistic comes from a survey asking people, "Which star is closest to the Earth" where 55% of people said something like 'Alpha Centauri' (and some small % said something completely stupid) Sol is just kind of there in our day to day lives, so it tends not to come to mind when asked that question.

Renaming something that someone else discovered...that's low.

Man, the IAU's just on a power trip.
