The Map:

This is an earth map made with the worldbuilder and notepad.
In a speculative attempt to improve performance on such a large
map I've kept it under 24,000 tiles and used a 1.6:1 X:Y ratio.
I've left the proportions of the projection unaltered other
than slight enlargement of a few areas for gameplay or to
preserve character e.g. UK, Japan, Great Lakes and I've left
out everything south of the antarctic circle.

The Mod:
Adds map size 'Planetary' (192x120),
Max civs 18, 24 and 32,
Changes a few city names to suit ai placement,
Adjusts domination victory parameters to scale,
Adds game speed 'Odyssey' ('Marathon' turns, 'Epic' production/
growth/G.P.) to cater for more civs and expansion.

Patch compatibility:
Vanilla v1.74
Warlords v2.13
BtS All versions.

To Install:
Download the .rar file for your version of Civilization IV,
Extract the contents,
Vanilla;
Place the 'CarterEarth(18)' folder in your
"...My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Mods" folder.
Warlords;
Place the 'CarterEarth(18w)' and 'CarterEarth(24w)' folders in your
"...My Documents\My Games\Warlords\Mods" folder.
Beyond The Sword;
Place the 'CarterEarth(18BtS)', 'CarterEarth(24BtS)' and 'CarterEarth(32BtS)'
folders in your "...My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Mods" folder.

To Run:
Start CivIV, Warlords or Beyond the Sword.
Go to 'Advanced\Load a mod',
Select a mod e.g. 'CarterEarth(32BtS)' and load,
When the game reloads, go to 'Single Player\Custom Scenario'
(or MultiPlayer then select 'new scenario' in the lobby),
Select a map e.g. 'CarterEarth(32BtS)', choose your civ and select
your options or retain the recommended settings.
There are 2 versions of the map. One with civs starting in fixed locations,
the other 'random' (no fixed start locations or barbarians) for customised games.
Multiplayer has been successfully tested with a direct IP connection
over a vpn (if you experience oos errors, save the game, quit to desktop,
reload and rejoin. Using a standard gamespeed might also help).

To Improve Performance:
Update graphics drivers,
Reduce graphics settings,
Select 'Single Unit Graphics' in options,
Always quit to desktop before reloading/beginning a game,
Destroy civilizations by war or in the worldbuilder
for significant performance improvements.

Allow me to congratulate you on a very fine job. Well done! This has to be one of the most beautiful Earth maps I've ever seen. Only thing I might worry about is it's size, but that's always a problem with Earth maps.

And THANK YOU for making the Pacific Ocean to scale!

EDIT: Oh, by the way, will you update this for BtS?

Thanks :)

I'd like to make several versions and BtS/Vanilla are priorities.

If my pc can cope I'll do one with 32civs for BtS.

my mouth started to drool at the sight of this map...however it seems i was unable to download it. anyone else having this problem?

I believe you can't download it until the moderators approve his uploaded file. This applies only for people who have less than 30 posts or have been members for less than 30 days, IIRC. (To prevent viruses and spam, I would imagine.)

Looking good, however- this map especially as well as the other giant earth map are heavily distorted from their projection. I have access to some pretty nice maps if you ever want them, theyre great in terms of porportion though continents are slightly rotated.

Downloading now

any idea how long this moderation period lasts?

The simple answer is, "Until they get around to it." ;)

If you are really eager I suppose you could always PM woodelf about it.

Carter, do you think you could make an 18-player version without cities and units preplaced? This would be easier to implement with Kael's Speed Mod, as it wouldn't require merging a modded SDK.

Yes. I'm thinking of removing the warlords specific civs to make a vanilla version, 18civ warlords and 18civ BtS. These should all be quite moddable and less civs would help it work on slower machines. I'll try to release 'clean' versions for each but I'd like to make any necessary changes to the map first so please let me know if you spot anything dodgy.

Hi Carter, congratulations on a truly gorgeous map all those hours toiling away over a hot monitor have paid off and this release looks lovely.

So it looks like I’m going to be glued to this seat twiddling my thumbs until the download goes live :D

Thanks for the heads up Gaius,

I was slow on the uptake but now I've looked at Kael's speed mod it looks like exactly what this map needs.

I've changed the 18civ entry to 24 and so far it seems to work :)

Your map is a funny balance between Normal Earth Maps and Genhis Kai Earth map...

In others words : your map is not too big ;)

EDIT : i took Romans at speed Odyssee on your world map on my warlords 2.13, "Civ 4 has encountered a problem" and desktop

Sorry about that Lachlan, I haven't updated to 2.13 myself yet and am waiting for it's bugs to be resolved at which time I'll release a 2.13 version or update this one. I believe this is the case with most mods. Thanks for testing it with 2.13 and reporting back, I wanted to know what would happen but didn't want to take the risk while I'm still working on it. Meanwhile if you can bring yourself to downgrade to 2.08 it should work perfectly :).

EDIT: It seems the patch is fine but we need the dll source for the patches to update mods.
EDIT: The dll's in the installation directory. 2.13 version coming soon.

Ah no

I will have BTS in a couple of days and the epic game and its 11 scenarii will occupe me for a moment :mischief:

Thanks. This one only works with Warlords v2.08 AFAIK but if you've got BtS please try it and let me know.

I've installed BTS today and I've tried your map but it doesn't work. There is a crash when we launch it. I think there is a incompatibility between the map and the new version of Civilization :(

Can you correct this problem, if it's possible and if you have the time of course :)
