John Edwards said:
“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.”
So what do you think of this grim assessment? My thoughts will follow.

There's moronic statements, like John Edwards said.

Then there's even bigger moronic statements, like the title of this thread. Don't worry, you're not a racist though.

Seeing as we are unfamiliar with sarcasm, I shall close the register at this point.

Well, if Bill O'Reilly is a racist for his comments on his dinner with Al Sharpton in Harlem...

Where did you find the quote from, amadeus?

Out of interest, who is John Edwards? (Ignorant Briton here)

He is a former democratic vice-presidential candidate who is known for having an expensive hair-do and being a rich lawyer. He is now one of the thousands of people who are running for president in 2008.

Ah-ha, another one of those. Never been able to keep track of American politics, despite a weekly Economist subscription.

That is money well spent. I get it for free, luckily my college library has a subscription.

If Hillary says the same thing, will Elizabeth then complain that it was John's idea first?

He obviously overspoke the point he was trying to make which is that building more prisons as the primary response is not going to address the underlying problems that cause young black men to end up in prison at disproportionately higher numbers than the rest of the population.

People will twist into what they will, just as people will read the thread title as attempted sacarsm or basement-level truth.

If blacks* stopped being criminals they would stop going to jail. Can't blame any one else for that.

Of course Johnny boy's words are over exaggerated to a point of absurdity. How else could he muster up some votes if not to play up class and race divisions even to a point where they don't really exist.

*They aren't African and African American can refer to whites too so the use of a incorrect term is stupid. More so when its used to be PC.

Your track record works against you here.

More OT, I think the statement is wrong... it is a form of reverse race-baiting, I do agree.

I wish both sides would look at these types of issues for what they are: Issues of socio-demographics, not race.

Well said.

People will twist into what they will, just as people will read the thread title as attempted sacarsm or basement-level truth.
In both cases, I think you have to consider the source.
