Man.... that thing is ugly (the sub, not the Civ4 model!).

A lot of the U-boat action tok place on the surface, the boats carried alot more shells for the deck guns than they did torpedos. once they penetrated the escort screen and were in amongst the merchantmen the boats would surface and let loose. This was the reason fitting guns to merchantmen worked. Also the boats had much more speed and endurance on the surface. Run on the surface in the safety of the convoy and take the opportunity to recharge for when the escorts show up again and you need to dive.

It is a nice job with the graphics Coyote, it might be a challenging boat to actually write into the game though. Will be interesting to watch.

thanks! :)

yes, after learning how to get a shader model, i must say it makes a big difference (simply compare the to top right with the others), and it´s faster to get a "good" result.

perhaps the best use for this unit would be in WWII scenarios, something like this: when this unit comes close to a bad or non defended vichy french colony, this colony switch to free french, or/and because it was one sub which could take "Prize" relativ safe (because of the range of the main guns - it could stay outside the range of armed freighter) - if you attack a freighter you get an certain amount of money. But this is not my part of the work :)

Why is it classed as a cruiser? Has it got a crusier type size gun, because honestly, i would still call that a sub (Expecting some abuse for this post:p)

underwater cruiser = submarine cruiser

(between the two world wars developed type of submarine with main guns on cruiser level), so you were right, it´s still a submarine

The Surcouf was armed with TWO 8-inch (203mm) naval guns... that calibre of gun is the same as mounted on most navy's heavy cruisers. Typical sub deck gun armament of the time were more in the single 3.5" (88mm) or 4" (101mm) gun mounts.

That is a VERY heavy gun armament for a sub.

well the glorious Surcouf - glad to see the greatest ship of ww2 make it to Civ4.
Well done and with thanks.

Didn't it capsize and sink under the weight of the gun ? I vaguely remember reading something like this... Or was it a similar design from somewhere else ?

lol,yes and better yet- i will concur with wolfshanz and say that the model looks cooler than the actual ship. a great conceptual idea that- like most conceptual art-
tends to be large scale, and well crafted- which ironically is the opposite of "conceptual".

In so far as uses (and it did have an observation plane- maybe a bi plane with blimp stats flying overhead-)
The op's/artist's mention of Vichy, or the default sub of France, or the Sub of
a Legioniarre civ or even a a Pirate Civ sub replacement ( U could even have Surcouf
himself (a Corsair) as a leader).

Oh yeah, it was also biult to house a small attack craft aboard and had room for prisoners
allocated.

It sank under mysterious conditions... nobody knows for sure (dead men tell no tales), but the fact it sank cannot be disputed (unless Troy says it's still running around with Captain Elvis Presley in-charge).

After capturing an island, and while sailing to a secret mission in the pacific and taking on the british, germans and canadians it was - according to one theory- attacked by americans. but it may have slipped away to the tune of blue suede shoes in french.

hi ,

well several other subs with guns mounted have sunk due to the weight , one british sub was lost like that . the jap subs took this into account

a nice page with some rara pics >> http://zone.sousmarins.free.fr/cadre sous marin photos N1.htm

a nice unit , congrats on the thought and job :goodjob:

Have a nice sub day

Mysterious circumstances indeed:(, Model looks ok, although submarines with giant guns on their hull were put out of production for a reason
