The year is [wiki]500 AD[/wiki]. Nearly eighty years have passed since the Roman legions were withdrawn from Britannia. The island, rich and unprotected, has been invaded by wave upon wave of barbarians from northern Europe – [wiki]Angles[/wiki], [wiki]Saxons[/wiki], [wiki]Jutes[/wiki], [wiki]Danes[/wiki]. They have conquered or assimilated the Romano-British peoples of the south and east of Britannia. A new era dawns.

As the warlord of one of the new [wiki]Anglo-Saxon[/wiki] kingdoms, you must struggle for supremacy with your fellow invaders. Each lord is desperate to carve out an empire in the new lands. There will be battles and wars ahead the like of which this island has never seen before – but there will be glory and honour. For a warrior wins renown in battle, and through conquest comes prosperity and the establishment of a lasting culture. Each warlord dreams of being pronounced [wiki]Bretwalda[/wiki] – the overking of all of Britannia. But few will achieve it.

The land of Britannia is rich, flowing with many rivers, covered in game-rich forests. But land is scarce, and there is competition. To the north is the land of the [wiki]Pict[/wiki]s, a powerful, warlike people, able to mobilise great forces from their highland retreats. To the west are the remaining Romano-British kingdoms – old, secure, and powerful. You cannot challenge them yet – but you can spread and develop faster than they can. Their age is waning, and a new age is coming.

And greater powers stir beyond the seas. In the far west is the land of Ireland, an ancient culture, never conquered by the Romans. There still flickers the flame of antiquity and the learning of the ancients. Ireland could yet extend its cultural sway over the whole of Britannia. From Ireland, and from the European continent to the south, rumours reach you of a new religion – the Christian faith. At some point you will have to contend with missionaries who will seek to convert you and your kingdom. Christianity offers cultural and educational prizes beyond imagination. Will you raise the sign of the Rood – the Cross – throughout your lands, or would you do better to keep to the faith of your forefathers, and honour the pagan gods through battle and glory?

And to the east, rumours grow of another power – a mighty people who sail over the ocean in dragon-prowed ships, wielding great axes, seeking plunder and spoils. Build your kingdom quickly and root it in strength – for the Vikings will surely put it to the greatest test.

Your people have invested you with power and honour. Will you repay them in kind? Will you rise to the challenge? Will you win glory on the battlefield and blessings from On High? Will you seize the title of Bretwalda – or will you die in the attempt?

Description: Jute invaders who sailed across the North Sea to raid and invade Great Britain from the late fourth century onwards. They dealt with the native Celtic people with a variety of displacement, absorption and destruction.

I hope the above is mostly pretty simple, and as such the rules will be kept as short as possible to maximize the freedom for the players creativity, though feel free to ask if you are unsure.

Economy: In the world of 500AD, it is a barter economy. Your land feeds the men of your nation, and any excess enters the economy and turns into goods. Goods can be exchanged to get-things-done(GTD). Your economy stat shows how many units of GTD you have. It is rather relaxing to observe how upon spending your GTD’s, thing-get-done. For darning the hole in your Royal Socks, or raising an army to vanquish your foe, GTD’s are the way to go!
#Stored GTD's are those hidden away in your strongroom, your treasury.
#Produced GTD's are your nations economic output every turn.

So each turn spend all your produced GTD's and all is fine, you can even dip into your Stored GTD's if needs must. It is sensible to have some stored away though. Any produced GTD's that aren't spent each turn will go into your Store.

Army: Since in this period there were no standing armies, and it was a barter economy, it takes 1 GTD equip and maintain the basic training for a man. Horses and better equipment obviously costs more. Click here for a full list of available units and their costs.

Navy: Naval warfare is very basic in this time, and ships are not much more than transport vessels. 10 GTD builds 1 Scyp. Technological advances will be possible. Click here for more info

Loyalty: How much people trust your leadership, if you lead them well it will rise to the point that people will gladly sacrifice their lives for you, lead them badly and people will be reluctant to follow your orders, possibly even turning on you and attempt to overthrow your rule. Loyalty is also the most important value to determine how many people will take up arms to defend your homelands from invasion, in a cult of personality most men and even some women will take up arms to defend their beloved nation and ruler, but when rebellious some of your people might actually take up arms to help the invaders overthrow their hated ruler.
Loyalty Levels are: Rebellious, Unruly, Reluctant, Balanced, Dependable, Faithful, Cult of Personality.

Projects: Grand Projects of your nation, their effects can range from a one time stat increase (like increased income) to more abstract concepts like increased influence amongst the Celtic nations. In order to start a project PM me your idea and I tell you how much it will cost and how long it will take. You can speed up the project by creative means or simply by pumping more GTD into your project.
Projects can cover all aspects of your nation, be it the Culture, Infrastructure, Technology etc...for example if you want a superior infrastructure you might start a “Imperial Roads Project”.

Technology: This shows what a nation has developed an understanding of. A nation can only strive towards one technology at a time. Each technology has a research time and a cost. You can spend extra money to reduce how many turns it takes to complete. You can only be researching one thing at a time. Click here for a full list of the available technologies. They cannot be traded.

Orders: Limit them to one PM, pictures and links are encouraged. If you are expanding, SHOW me how much you want to expand.

Stories: These are not required though you will notice that things will tend to go better for players whose actions are complemented with stories.

Spoiler :

Spoiler Army :
Beorn/Milita
1GTD=1
A "Beorn" is simply a warrior. The Anglo-Saxons had a remarkably wide range of words for a warrior - hæle, mago, secg, wiga... hardly surprising, in such a warfare-oriented society! In the Anglo-Saxon world, everyone was a Beorn some of the time. The most basic unit possible. Basically a commoner living on your lands.

Atheling/Prince
25GTD=1
Those of royal blood were known as "Athelings" . They are your heirs, the leaders of your Army. You can of course sire them, or promote a lower ranked general as well.

Franciscamen
2GTD=1 (requires Battle Weapons)
The first battle axes were basically wood-cutting tools that enterprising soldiers put to a new use. They were an effective weapon, partly because not much metal was required to make them (the handle being made of wood), and partly because they were pretty intuitive to use. An axeman could be a powerful force on the attack, the weight of his weapon lending extra power to his swings. However, the axe could be unwieldy, and after swinging, the axeman would be vulnerable to a counter-attack from any foes still living. For this reason, an axeman could be quite weak on defence. The early Anglo-Saxons were something of pioneers in the use of axes in warfare. They specialised in a kind of axe called a "francisca", so named because it was used by the Franks, over the sea. The francisca was a relatively small axe, designed to be thrown at the enemy. The idea seems to have been that a whole line of warriors would hurl their franciscas in unison at the enemy troops, an assault that must have been potentially devastating.

Palfreyman
4GTD=1 (Requires Horse Riding)
A "palfrey" is a horse, and horses were very important to the Anglo-Saxons, who seem to have inherited a great reverence for the animals from their ancestors, as well as from the people who inhabited Britain before them. Huge chalk horses still dominate many hillsides in England, and even the names of the first Anglo-Saxon invaders, Hengist and Horsa, mean "Stallion" and "Horse". The Anglo-Saxons also used horses in battle, and indeed the palfrey was essential for any moderately well-equipped fyrdsman. The horses were usually used for transport to the battle, and fighting on horseback was unusual. However, the warriors were clearly very attached to their mounts.
Anglo-Saxon horse burials have been discovered, and some warriors were even buried with their horses.

Spoiler Navy :
Scyp
10GTD=1 (Requires Sailing)
"Scyp" is the Anglo-Saxon word for "ship", and boats played an important role in Anglo-Saxon life. For one thing, the Anglo-Saxons originally reached Britain in boats across the North Sea, and for some kingdoms, such as the East Anglians, sea-faring remained a way of life. Boats, when used for fishing, were a source of sustenance and income; used to transport soldiers, they were a weapon of war. The basic Scyp can transport ~25 men.
But boats were more important than this alone. A number of ship-burials are known, where a great lord was laid to rest with not only his treasure and his weapons, but in his ship too. This testifies not only to the ritual value placed on boats, but also to the notion that the lord required some kind of transport after his death - a consideration which may underlie the horse-burials that are also known. The most famous ship-burial is, of course, that of Sutton Hoo.

Transport Scyp
8GTD=1 (Requires Ship building)
With better techniques, a bigger ship can be built and at a lower cost.

The Argyll peninsular and its surrounds are different from mainland Ireland, but culturally they also form part of the Irish sea provinces, easily distinguished from the rest of the highland kingdoms of Britain.

Is good to see this get going. Well, stories and such to come.

Wessex signing in here.

Powys is here.

Deir is here. The NES looks excellent Abaddon. Could we have a deadline?

EDIT: also, where can we find the list of available technologies?

Abaddon, I have sailing as my description. Could you please fix that? Also, the Technology link just shows costs for military units.

Anyways, Ebrauc is here.

Lothian here.

Confirming Circind, however your game map doesn't extend the region as far north as the map you based it on. It's not too much of a problem, except that now it doesn't actually include Aberdeen's position (on the original map, it's right on the border of Circind/Ce at the coast.)

Ceredigion checking in, and not completely out of the game already.

And, for those of you playing Welsh states, please learn to pronounce Welsh. It bothers me how some of you might pronounce Gwynedd, for instance... ;)

Why does it matter this is a forum.

Welcome all, glad we have a healthy number of players, and also those quick to reply to this.

I will PM others to ensure they know its "up" once I have sorted out the Tech tree.

Turns are going to be 2 years in length, starting in early spring.
