i've been reading the series and have almost finished Toll the Hounds. This has been the best series i have read so far, but the malazan forum is crappy. i was hoping i could start a discussion and meet some other Steven Erickson fans.

Dead clever series.

Recently embarked upon rereading the whole thing now, in preparation for the last couple of books (have read up to and including Toll the Hounds). The first couple of volumes really reward rereading after you've gotten further into the series (it's actually been my third time through Gardens of the Moon, as I also revisited that between books 4 and 5; it was effectively a completely different book the second time around, and yet another one this time).

OMG I've been waiting so long for a Mazalan bok of the fallen discussion thread!

Unfortunately I have nothing to add :(

yeah, book 2 and 3 are especially intense.

I love the series and have reread the earlier ones a couple of times, when a new installment came out. I agree with Leifmk: you understand the earlier ones far better with additional info from the later ones.

A question to the other fans: have any of you read the book (or maybe it's more than one by now) written in the Malazan universe by another author, in collaboration with Erikson or something? I haven't yet because I distrust this kind of 'shared universe' stuff, but if you can recommend it, I'd reconsider.

Edit: Had to look it up - I mean 'Night of Knives' by Ian C. Esslemont. Also, I see there will be a sequel 'The Crimson Guard'.
Also, Malazan Book 9 is coming in January! :-)

It's already out in europe or somewhere. at least that's what wikipedia said.

yeah, i heard the other books are about Korbal Broach and emanciper and teh other necromancer guy. I don't know about reading them either, i might do so after i finish toll the hounds.

Read it a while back. It was... okay. Fairly short and lightweight compared to the Erikson novels.

Also, I see there will be a sequel 'The Crimson Guard'.

Out for a good while already. Not read it yet, consensus seems to be that it's a bit better than the first.

Out here for a while already, which is why I'm rereading 1-8.

we should make the discussion less general, and maybe discuss some characters or maybe just certain books.

A world populated by overpowered heroes, each book will introduce a hero or 2,3,4, or 5 and describe fights to see who is the ultimate champion of ultimate destiny, who will truimph? Btw I like the series, it is like a comic book.

I like how the books are so epic, yet also can focus on multiple single characters and they are also realistic. I like how Erickson keeps everything believable from all the blood and gore in the fighting, to the differences in names based on the area they come from.

I have read through Book 3-Memories of Ice. Can somebody tell me if The "Falling" or the Fallen One is the same person as the Crippled God?? Without too much spoiler info.

yes, he is, but if you get to toll the hounds, the dying god is different. I hope i didn't spoil anything.

I am 500 pages into Book #4 House of Chains and I have to say I am about ready to dump the whole series. 300 pages on Karsa Orlong, Toblakai, come on! Another mounting army in Aren about to make another 5 million mile march across the continent. I don't know if I can take it again. The most interesting part was the T'lan Imass and the Tiste Edur guy coming across the 7 Hounds of Darkness and the other Tistes guys (Loison) of Light, whatever. That was about 50 pages of actually intersting stuff.

I can not endure another long BORING ass "Chain of Dogs" 2 !! Somebody please tell me it is worth it to read on!

Oh and now Karsa is going to have 2 dead buddy ghosts accompanying him to Jhag Oldhan. WTH?

just keep reading, karsa is a beast!!!! The next book is the really confusing one, cause it jumps backwards and talks about trull sengar.

Has any of you already read the Dust of Dreams ? Someone said it was only coming next january, but I have already bought a copy in early september

I approve of this thread. My friends have bought and read Dust of Dreams already, but I haven't yet so I can't comment on that. I can comment on Ian C. Esslemont's Night of Knives and The Return of the Crimson Guard tho. My advise is to go out and get them! The Return is great and in a way a return to the feeling of the first three books. As for Karsa Orlong, I kinda agree. He didn't interest me that much early on, but he manages to pull you in eventually and once he does .. ;)

Are there any other Bugg-Tehol affectionados?

Oh my Gawd!!!! Tehol Beddict is amazing!!!!!

The whole family is pretty beast but the way he treats bug
Spoiler :
even though he's Mael
is hilarious.

If Book #5 is confusing, then I'm in real trouble because I am having a real hard time with #4 House of Chains. All these damn warrens make little sense.

Omtose Phellack. Is that a warren or a place?
How many Kurald warrens are there?
The army that marched through the warren prior to Karsa strolling in and meeting the Jaghut Queen and freeing her, who were they?
The Jaghut Queen makes referene to all the half breeds like Icarium. Half bred with who? T'lan Imass?
Karsa's 7 gods are T'lan Imass? Did they escape the Ritual?
So Osric was the God of the Tiste Loisan? Huh? I thouht they were the "Light" side of Mother Dark's chidren. I thought she was bored with Dark, made Light and started all the trouble with the Tiste.
So Osric was a Tiste? What kin is/was he to Anomander?

I am at the part where Karsa just chipped off an un-chippable piece of flint to make his sword that I'm sure will be close to Dagonpur in power. Can anybody answer any of these questions without too many spoilers? It's OK if you spoil a couple.

i don't quite remember the army you're talking about, but i'll answer the other questions.

half breeds with toblakai, thats why she is telling it to karsa.

there are 3 kurald warrens. there's gallain, liosan, and emhurlain 9not sure about the spelling on the last two)
oseric is like the annomander rake of the liosan
she actually mated with dark and made shadow, thats why the andii hated her, then she just left them.
with karsa's gods, the book explains towards the end.
basically oseric is annomander's step bro.
