Was this really necessary?

From the Ottoman civ description on the Civilization V site:

"Many Americans know very little about the Ottoman Empire (it occupies the blind spot Americans have for pretty much everything between Greece and China)."

EDIT: The entire description has been changed to:

"The Ottoman Empire was born in Anatolia (in modern Turkey) at the start of the 13th century. It expanded into three continents and thrived for some six centuries."

Well, prove to me that statement is false :p

I barely know anything about the Ottoman Empire but I bet I know more than most Americans, and most people in general.

The lnie, however, probably wasn't the best thing to include in there. How about more info on the Ottoman's instead so as to educate?

A lot of the factoids seem non sequitur, especially right after the description of the history of the civilization. Honestly, the factoids just seem to detract from the civness of the website.

Well i don't know much except they were a major member of the Central Powers in WWI.

lol politics is creeping into a Firaxis game (erm, website) again (or is this 2K responsibility?). That comment really ought to be removed. No point pissing off your target audience.

You are North American in region, so it's referring to you also; since you are of the Americas :P (obviously it's referring to USA though)

Everyone wanted 'facts' and 'sources' stated about comments made of Steam... so let's have 2K and Firaxis give some 'facts' and 'sources' from where they derived this information. Also, let's hear some names of who is responsible and why they chose to blantantly land an attack on peoples of the Americas, with implied stupidity.

There was really no point in the remark. If we are so "ignorant" about the Ottomans, then please; enlighten us instead of telling us how stupid we are.

It could have easily read...

"Many Australians know very little about the Ottoman Empire (it occupies the blind spot Australians have for pretty much everything between Greece and China)."

Or...

"Many Spaniards know very little about the Ottoman Empire (it occupies the blind spot Spaniards have for pretty much everything between Greece and China)."

I'm pretty sure that an ordinary Spaniard or Australian knows no more about the Ottoman Empire than the average American citizen.

I don't know about you, but anti-Americanism in general is getting really old to me...

Not only that, but out of all the descriptions of all the civ's, America's is obviously written in a degrading manner:

The United States of America is a world "super-power" (which more or less means that it possesses weapons capable of destroying everything on the planet). A relatively young civilization, the United States formed in the 18th century, nearly self-destructed in the 19th century, and became the most powerful and dominant military, technological, cultural and economical civilization in the 20th. One can hardly guess what will happen to it in the 21st.

If this is what 2K and Firaxis have become, I can for sure say they can go **** themselves.

Most importantly, it's giving people something to complain about and if not fixed quickly, could create yet more negative PR. I do hope it is fixed quickly.

America's description is kind of annoying but the blind spot thing is actually pretty funny (Yes, I'm American). However more info would have been nice, that comment shouldn't have been a replacement.

Every other civ is filled with mostly facts. I didn't see any major negative opinion pieces as was seen in the America statements and on the Ottoman statement. It is disrespectful also to the Ottoman Turkish civ to put such non-sense in there instead of putting facts of that civilization instead.

Using the Ottoman description to waste space on personally attacking another country is just as pathetic.

They are right. Most American peoples are completely ignorant about geography. The wrong things is that this does not limit to Ottoman Empire, it is tied with every nation on the globe that is not USA.

I can't find anymore the video that asks American people to show on a map where are the countries but here is one that could do the stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q566ys0sqVQ&feature=related

I'm not sure if I see what's offensive about that. Yes, we have lots of weapons. And as for "one can hardly guess...," that's not insinuating anything negative, you're just reading it that way. It's saying our future is unpredictable, that's all.

The "blind spot" thing was a jab, but that's the stereotype. "ha ha, Americans don't know much about other countries." We all have a stereotype we don't like. French people surrender. Women can't drive. English have bad teeth. Just gotta learn how to laugh these things off.

And really, the only civ whose description looks insulting to me is the Aztecs. "Today the Aztecs are best remembered for the bloodiness of their religious practices and rapidity with which they collapsed in the face of external assault."

The irony here being the person writing it probably couldn't think of anything else to say, and so was just being honest about his/her self. Apparently, the Ottoman Empire was "extremely interesting" too.

Careful, the Chaser boys are generally pretty insulting towards Americans (if it wasn't already obvious lol). They always obviously pick out the most moronic of people they speak to. You pretty much can't get more anti-American than those guys. That kind of humour is actually pretty pathetic. Adding fuel to the fire, you might be doing by posting that link. ;)

It is different if they put jabs like that in for every civilization. They did not.

If someone writes jabs like that towards other members on CFC over country and ethnicity, they get an infraction, it has been done recently in these Civ 5 threads.

World Illiteracy is around 15% ?, so according to Naokaukodem; those people are just complete freaking idiots (which is an extremely ignorant stance to take). Of course, Naokaukodem seems to hate anything western, and his geography skills are probably horrible without looking at a map.

It's actually pure and simple anti-western.

Here's the thing on that. The game is made by Americans. If they put in jabs about how the French are cheese-eating surrender-monkeys, it's an insult. If they poke fun at the stereotype of American geographical knowledge, it's self-effacing humor.

It oughta say something about the Ottoman Empire. Not some other civ. :hmm:

so true! they forgot to mention, that most of america's super-powers comes from the ability to print dollars. and such puts all other countries at a disadvantage

You think everyone that lives in every country loves their country? No, they do not. If they poke at America, do it to every civ.

And they show Ottoman Empire (like White Elk and I stated) no respect at all for filling it with garbage of a statement like 'jabbing another country'.

In which case, how about we all put up a 'Fun Jab' towards every nation on the civ list? Arabia is next on the list in alphabetical order, shall we start with them? Make sure it is negative based, to be fair. Who wants to start?
